What is Astronomy?yAstronomy is a natural science that deals with the

y Study of celestial objects (such as stars, planets, comets, star clusters and galaxies) and

y Phenomena that originate outside the Earth'satmosphere (such as the cosmic background radiation).

yAstronomy is concerned with they evolution,

    y physics,

    y chemistry,

    y meteorology, and

y motion of celestial objects, as well as the formation anddevelopment of the universe.

    yAstronomy = astros(stars)+ nomos(law or culture), i.e.

    law of stars.

    Specific Classificationy Solar astronomy

y Sun is the most frequently studied stary It is at a distance of eight light minutes from earth.

y Its luminosity has increased upto 40% till date.

y This increasing luminosity can have a significant impact

    on earth

    y Stellar astronomy

y The study of stars and stellar evolution is fundamental

to our understanding of the universe.y Star formation occurs in dense region of dust and gas.

y Starting mass of a star affects its main features such asluminositye.g. more the mass, more is the luminosity of

    the star.

    y Planetary science

y Examines the assemblage of planets, moons, dwarf planets, comets, asteroids, and other bodies orbiting the Sun.

y Solar system is divided intoy Inner terrestrial planets- Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars

    y Asteroid belt

y Outer gas giant planets- Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

    y Galactic astronomy

y Our solar system orbits within the Milky Way, a spiral galaxy.

y It is a rotating mass of gas, dust, stars and other objects, held

    together by mutual gravitational attraction.

y Earth is located in its dusty outer arms.

    y It consist of

y Core at the center having a massive black hole in its center.

y Four arms that spiral from the core

    y Extragalactic astronomy

y Study of objects outside our galaxy is a branch ofastronomy concerned with the

y formation and evolution ofGalaxies;y their morphology and classification; and

y the examination of active galaxies, and the groups and clustersof galaxies

y Cosmologyy Cosmology could be considered the study of the universe as a

    whole.

y physical cosmology has provided a deep understanding of theformation and evolution of the cosmos.

y Fundamental to the structure of the universe is the existenceof dark matter and dark energy, forming 96% of the mass ofthe universe.

    Artificial Satellites

yA satellite is an object which has been placed into orbit

by human endeavor.y Sputnik-1 was the first artificial satellite launched by

Soviet Union on 4th Oct, 1957.

y First Indian satellite was Aryabhatta which was

    launched on 19thApril, 1975.

yArtificial satellites are of many types such as

    y Astronomical Satellites

    y Biosatellite

    y Communication satellites

    y Navigational satellites

    y Weather satellites etc.

    y

Weather forecasting is the application of science andtechnology to predict the state of the atmosphere for afuture time and a given location.

y data from weather satellites is used as weather warnings

as important forecasts because they are used to protectlife and property.

y Forecasts based on temperature and precipitation areimportant to agriculture, and therefore to traders within

commodity markets.y Since outdoor activities are severely curtailed by heavy

rain, snow and the wind chill, forecasts can be used toplan activities.

Astronomy in TourismyAstronomy in tourism has all of a sudden boosted up

    the space tourism.

y Space tourism is the recent phenomenon in whichwealthy individuals or corporations are spending a lot totravel in the space.

y Unfortunately space tourism has been criticized asbeing a "playground for the rich."

y Thevision for the future is to make space tourism

affordable and available to the middle class in just a few, short years.

y Dennis tito was the first space tourist.
