Pros and Cons
ASIMO
ASIMO is humanoid robot developed by Honda in 2000.
It is the 4th man like humanoid robot.
ASIMO was created to be a helper to people. ASIMO’s height of four feet make it the perfect size for helping around the house , or to assist a person confined to a bed or a wheelchair.
ASIMO’s size allow it to look directly at an adult sitting in a chair or sitting up in bed.
How long did it take to develop ASIMO ??
Honda’s development of the humanoid begun fin 1986.
The world first self regulating, bipedal (two-legged) humanoid robot named P2 , was completed by Honda in December 1996.
After P2, P3 the first completely independent bipedal humanoid walking robot arrived in September 1997.
ASIMO was completed October 31 , 2000 and remains the most advanced humanoid robot ever
created.

Structure Of ASIMO
Power:
ASIMO is powered by 40V nickel metal hydrate battery.
ASIMO can operate for approximately 30 minutes on a
single battery.
Four hour are required to completely recharge ASIMO’s
battery. ASIMO can automatically find its charging
station and connect his battery to that machine for
recharge purposes.
Camera:
ASIMO is equipped with two cameras in its head.
Cont ……
Camera (Remaining):
These camera “eyes” allow ASIMO and its operator to view
the surrounding environment.
These camera allow ASIMO to independently recognize
unique faces that have been stored in its memory and to
accurately judge distance from objects.
ASIMO has also a camera on its torso used to view markers
on the floor and on stairs.
Motors:
ASIMO is equipped with 26 separate servomotors.
How ASIMO walk & balanced ??
ASIMO walk’s by “prediction movement control ” , that is it predict the next move and shifting the center of gravity accordingly.
Unlike earlier version called P3 , which had to stop temporarily between changes of directions, ASIMOsmoothly change the direction and walk smoothly.
ASIMO is very stable and smooth even when it move suddenly.
Cont ……
Stored walking patterns for start/acceleration , steady speed, deceleration , stopping and turning are combined to achieve smooth walking.
ASIMO turns smoothly without pausing.
Walking patterns are generated in real time , and foot placement locations andturning are carried out while walking smoothly in any direction.
ASIMO can walk on the stairs easily , itcan navigate to different direction easily.
Moreover it can easily balance on a single pedal.
Recognition Technology
With 2000's ASIMO model Honda added many features, labeled "Intelligence Technology", that enable ASIMO to interact better with humans. These features fall under 5 categories:1. Recognition of moving objects2. Posture/gesture recognition3. Environment recognition4. Sound recognition5. Face recognition.
Recognition of moving objects
ASIMO can detect movement of multiple objects, assessing distance and direction using the visual info. captured by the camera.
Featured served by this application are
Follow the movements of people
Follow a person
Yield to pedestrians in its path.
Greet a person when he or she approaches.
Recognition of postures and gestures
Positioning and movement of a hand,
recognizing postures and gestures.
Can react and be directed to both voice commands and natural movements of human being.
Recognize when a handshake is offered.
A person waving at it.
Movement directions.
Environment recognition
ASIMO can recognize the objects and terrain of his environment and act in a way that is safe for both himself and nearby humans.
Recognizing potential hazards such as stairs.
Avoid hitting humans and other moving objects.
Distinguishing sounds
ASIMO can distinguish between voices and other sounds.
He can respond to his name, face people when being spoken to, and recognize sudden, unusual sounds such as that of a falling object or a collision, and face in that direction.
Facial recognition
ASIMO has the ability to recognize faces, even when ASIMO or the human being is moving.
It can individually recognize approximately 10 different faces. Once they are registered it can address them by name.
