Brief History of ASIMO Created by Honda Motor Company in 1986
ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative
Mobility) Started off at over six feet tall and often feel
down
The company was getting frustrated withthe project and almost gave up hope

History Continued 1991 the ASIMO robot was now able to steadily
walk
It also developed the ability to walk on an incline By 1997 the robot was reduced in size to 4 feet
This feature enabled the robot to do activities
that humans could do such as sit at a computer,
turn on a light switch, and turn doorknobs

Head and Eyes
ASIMO "sees" the worldaround it with two camera
eyes. These cameras allowASIMO to visually map itsenvironment, understandand avoid stationary and
moving objects, andrecognize unique faces.

NECK
ASIMO can freely and
independently move
its head to follow
moving objects and to
look in the direction ofa detected sound.

BACKPACK
ASIMOs backpack containscustom-built processingsystems that control all
movement. ASIMO can becontrolled through wirelesssignals from a computeroperator or through voice and
hand signal commands that therobot can independentlyprocess and carry out.

MID-SECTION
ASIMOs mid-section contains arechargeable 40V/10AH nickel metalhydride (Ni-MH) battery that powersASIMO for approximately 30
minutes. At around 17 pounds,ASIMOs battery is its singleheaviest component. The placementof this battery helps ASIMO maintain
its center of gravity when using itsreal-time, flexiblewalking
technology.

ARMS
ASIMOs advanced walking technology
allows ASIMO to walk continuously while
freely gesturing and moving its arms. Thefive joints in each of ASIMOs arms
provide ASIMO with a wide range of upper
limb movement and allow ASIMO to moveits arms at its side within a 105-degree
angle.

HANDS
ASIMOs hands currently have a grasping force of 1.1
pounds. Its four fingers and opposable thumb on each
hand allow ASIMO to grasp objects such as a newspaper
or cell phone and to shake hands with people.HIPS
Sophisticated hip joints allow ASIMO to walk
continuously while changing directions at any time.
Intelligent, flexible-walking technology give ASIMOstability in response to sudden movements.

Standing at 120 centimeters (3 feet 11
inches) and weighing 54 kilograms
(114 pounds), the robot resembles asmall astronaut wearing a backpack
and can walk or run on two feet at
speeds up to 6 km/h (4.3 mph)

Recognition technology
1. Recognition of moving objects
Using the visual information captured by the cameramounted in its head, ASIMO can detect the movements
of multiple objects, assessing distance and direction.Common applications of this feature would include: the
ability to follow the movements of people with itscamera, to follow a person, or greet a person when he or
she approaches.

2. Recognition of postures and gestures
ASIMO can also interpret the positioning andmovement of a hand, recognizing postures and
gestures. Because of this ASIMO can react to
and be directed by not only voice commands, but
also to the natural movements of human beings.

3. Environment recognitionASIMO can recognize the objects and terrain of its environment and act in away that is safe for both itself and nearby humans. For example, recognizingpotential hazards such as stairs, and by stopping and starting to avoid hitting
humans or other moving objects.
4. Distinguishing sounds
ASIMO's ability to identify the source of sounds has beenimproved, and it can distinguish between voices and other
sounds. It can respond to its name, face people when beingspoken to, and recognize sudden, unusual sounds such as that of
a falling object or a collision, and face in that direction. It is alsoable to respond to questions, either by a brief nod, a shake of the
head or a verbal answer.

5. Facial recognition
ASIMO has the ability to recognize faces, even
when ASIMO or the human being is moving. It
can individually recognize approximately 10
different faces. Once they are registered it can
address them by name.

ASIMOS FUTURE
As development continues on ASIMO, today
Honda demonstrates ASIMO around the
world to encourage and inspire young
students to study the sciences. And in the
future, ASIMO may serve as another set ofeyes, ears, hands and legs for all kinds of
people in need. Someday ASIMO might help
with important tasks like assisting the elderly
or a person confined to a bed or a wheelchair.
ASIMO might also perform certain tasks that
are dangerous to humans, such as fighting
fires or cleaning up toxic spills.
