HEALTHBenefits of Video Games
by Anthony Beyer
THE
BACKGROUNDVideo games get a bad rap. They've been
accused of promoting inactivity, obesity,
and even violence.
THE REALITYThose accusations are not a direct result
of gaming alone. In fact, there are benefits
to gaming which promote healthy living.
STRESS RELIEFFor individuals affected by stress and
depression, video gaming offers the benefit
of venting and mindfulness, especially for
Type A personalities.
PAIN RELIEFVideo games have been shown to relieve
physical pain in patients and soldiers using
the method of distraction.
MOTOR SKILLSInteractive games helped preschool-
aged children develop motor skills
and control of their bodies.
VISIONFirst person shooter games helped people
suffering from cataracts improve their
vision by causing them to view things
more sharply.
THERAPYResearch from the University of Utah
showed that games had a positive effect on
children affected by chronic illness, and
helped them better deal with daily
challenges.
DECISION MAKINGMost games already require a level of
cognitive ability and critical thought to win;
likewise, simulator games drive people to
make decisions based on their
surroundings.
