Harness the ‘Shiny Object’ Syndrome
5 Mistakes to Avoid During the
‘Shiny Object’ Drama
Let Me Introduce Myself
Once upon a time in 2005, a new VA was born.
Ready to jump right in and support whoever needed her.
She had all her business standards in place and knew exactly how much she wanted to charge.
All her equipment was state-of-the-art and in working order. She was ready for her new
business venture.
My ‘Shiny Object’ Drama
As a new VA, I was just like a sponge. I soaked up all kinds of information about being a VA:
• how to attract clients,
• how to set my rates,
• how to conduct interviews,
• how to manage the work, and don’t get me started on the technology.
My ‘Shiny Object’ Drama
#1. I wanted to know everything before I made a move!
My ‘Shiny Object’ Dilemma
Early in my business, I also had to struggle with these decisions:
• whether I should pay the money to get certified in a system,
• to be seen as an expert within an industry, or
• remain a generalist with great skills.
My ‘Shiny Object’ Dilemma
#2. I turned into someone who wanted to work with anyone.
My ‘Shiny Object’ TrapIn my quest for answers, I signed up for free teleclasses and telecalls from everyone and
anyone.
I just knew that eventually I would learn the ‘great secret to success’ !
What I quickly learned was that you get what you pay for – a lot of fluff and absolutely
nothing of value.
My ‘Shiny Object’ Trap
#3. I thought I could attend free events and that would be enough.
My ‘Shiny Object’ LessonBy investing in my self and learning how to run
my business I could see the possibilities.
After awhile, I had to stop the ‘learning’ and start the ‘doing’ to recoup my investments.
And I had to stop chasing just any ‘shiny object’.
My ‘Shiny Object’ Lesson
#4. Get out of the learning mode, trying to get everything perfect.
My ‘Shiny Object’ Ah Ha!
To my surprise, once I started applying what I learned, things started to happen. Clients
started to come my way!
I also saw the need to pick a target market in order to stay focused. And coaches made
sense for me.
My ‘Shiny Object’ Ah Ha!
#5. I had my heart set on supporting an industry that wasn’t ready for me. However, coaches were!
Use Caution with ‘Shiny Objects’
‘Shiny objects’ are valuable only when you can afford them and put into practice what you
learn.
The investment should not threaten your financial obligations to your family.
Remember that your return on the investment may take longer than you think.
