In The Beginning…
Winter 2010 I became interested in the Xbox 360 Kinect.
The idea: Create a interactive installation art piece that involves the kinect.
When a viewer walks up to the mirror/reflective surface they will see a monster (created in a 3-D sculpting program) bust instead of their own reflection.
The Setup

No Progress To Progress
Waiting on technology was a key issue Open source programs/programming is
a new world for me Once technology was available to me
and I had someone I could ask questions/get help the progress blossomed
2-D Progress
Got a 2-D character up and running using Xbox Kinect, OpenNI/ Nite, Osceleton and Animata. http://vimeo.com/20473750
Challenging task to get the piece up and running
From here I was unsure what I wanted the viewer to feel from my piece and contemplated if I wanted to stay in 2-D or try and get 3-D to work.
Changes
Did a lot of brainstorming for the “Whys” I bounced a lot of ideas in my head until
I was shown a few interactive art pieces that revolved around shadows
I researched the psychology of shadows and was completely intrigued
Why Shadows What they represent: our negative
intentions/emotions Everyone has one and can relate ”The shadow represents all our disowned,
despised, and repressed traits. It lives buried in the closets of our subconscious minds safe from our judgments. The shadow is our "dark side." It acts out for us all those denied emotions and urges we wish we didn't have. “
From here I knew I had to make my own 2-D shadow and rethink how I was going to present this piece.
Disconnect
Shadows will have a mind of their own after a certain point
Example: A shadow murdering another shadow , making out or a shadow flipping off the viewer
To get the Kinect to recognize a person you must have your arms up as in a “surrender pose”. When the viewer’s shadow acts out I’m assuming it will be the same pose.
