Task Context

• You are creating a resource for future coaches based on your experiences in Unit 11 tasks 1 and 2.

• You need to choose two of the performer levels below for you whole task to be based on.– Foundation– Participation– Performance– Elite

• You do not need to complete a comparison just explain in detail each of the following factors.

• This resource should be able to support future coaches start the work you have completed so far.

Talent ID

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)

Participation Talent ID is used in the participation stage so the better players can be picked out from the crowd and be taken into a higher level of sports performance. A good example is a scout, who will watch young children playing low level sport, and pick the talented children for trials at clubs. This is to help produce some young prospering talent for the future for clubs.

Performance Talent ID is also used in the performance stage. This is similar to what happens at the participation stage however happens at different ages. For example a coach using talent ID would decide whether they should be playing first team football, or another example is whether they are ready to sign their professional contract and step up to an elite level. This is common in many football clubs.

Monitoring current fitness levels

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)

Participation At a participation level measuring fitness levels can be important and helpful however they are not particularly vital. An example of a fitness test to measure the current fitness level of an athlete at a participation level of sport may be the bleep test or the 12 minute cooper run. These are much simpler, easier tests to construct and give a good overview of how fit an athlete is at that moment in time.

Performance At a performance level measuring fitness levels become much more vital as it is important to know whether athletes are fit and available to compete in sporting activity. This level of sports performance can include the simpler tests such as the cooper run and bleep test, however can also include much more in depth testing such as VO2 Max test. This sorts of tests give more specific data about an athlete and will contribute more in deciding the fitness of an athlete.

Identifying strengths and areas for improvement

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)

Participation At a participation level coaches will be able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of sporting activity. At this level it will usually be done by simply observing in games and training and giving feedback to athletes on what they believe are positive strengths or any negative weaknesses.

Performance At a performance level coaches and other spectators will identify strengths and weaknesses of athletes in sporting activity. It would be observed in person as well as perhaps watched back on film so the coaches are positive on what happens whilst performing and it will help the coaches give more accurate feedback. It is also good as the athletes themselves can watch back the videos and identify the strengths and weaknesses themselves.

Performance assessment

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)

Participation For a participation level, again simply observing sporting activity is how coaches would be able to assess performance. They would also be able to see how the opposition acted to effect performance or how certain scenarios in training can effect performance. At this low level it is hard to remember everything so performance can be assessed appropriately and changes can be made.

Performance For a performance level, coaches would observe and again use video to assess performance of sporting activity. With the help of the video they can look back at the oppositions effect on the game and discover strengths and weaknesses of performance.

Recovery after injury

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)

Participation At a participation level if an athlete gets injured and needs assistant they will have to go alone and will not get much support from coaches or clubs. At such a low level of performance there is no real resources for the recovery of athletes. They will either have to wait and slowly recover or go to the doctors or hospital.

Performance At a performance level if an athlete gets injured they may be able to have an option of what is best to do. They may go down the same line as participation seeing a private doctor outside of the club or they may have small time physio’s and doctors to treat the athletes which are apart of the club, however it is important to mention these physio’s and doctors will lack experience and expertise so they are not the best possible option.

Assessment of health status

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)

Participation At a participation level, health status is not considered a huge issue and the most an athlete will provide is a form stating any health related problems at that time or in the past. If it is not a big issue then they will be allowed to play sport. The low level of performance means they are unable to perform any health tests on athletes and have their own assessment.

Performance At a performance level, health status is only slightly more considered than at participation level. Again I do not believe any medical tests are performed however they do look more into any health related problems and are much better at helping and supporting these issues. For example they will not allow an athlete to perform if they believe he is fit and healthy enough.

Squad selection

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)

Participation At a participation level squad selection is a lot less important. It is more about athletes enjoying playing their sport and sharing places equally rather than competitive sides.

Performance At a performance level however this is very different. With the performance level you see a massive increase in competitiveness so squad selection is vital for success as you need the best players you have available. All the players are much more committed to the club/sport and want to win and perform well as much as possible.

Goal setting

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)

Participation At a participation level, goal setting is not very common and if used rather simple and easy, lacking detail and specificity. For example a participation football would set a goal to score 15 goals in one season.

Performance However a performance level athlete would set goals that are specific, measureable, achievable, realistic and time-based. These would be discussed with coaches and managers to ensure they are correct for them and they would also help to promote motivation.

Page 12: Unit 11 - Task 3

Human

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)

Participation As participation is done for enjoyment and fun rather than competitiveness athletes are not motivated or determined within the sporting activity. The coaches would also be there to promote fun and enjoyment.

Performance At a performance level due to increased competitiveness the athletes are much more committed, determined and motivated to succeed. This will be promoted further by coaches and managers.

Page 13: Unit 11 - Task 3

Facilities

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)

Participation At a participation level athletes will not have access to high end facilities and will perform on a low level surface. For example a participation football side will train and play at the park, and will not have any access to a gym or place of recovery.

Performance At a performance level however, this is quite different. For example training and matches will be performed in small time stadiums or grounds with half decent surfaces which will aid performance and promote a better game of football. Some performance level clubs may even supply gym equipment and recovery equipment.

Page 14: Unit 11 - Task 3

Time

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)

Participation At a participation level there is much less time to perform as people, either coaches or athletes will have other priorities and commitments elsewhere, such as jobs, which makes it difficult to train and play their sport as often as possible.

Performance At a performance level people still have other priorities and commitments elsewhere however the sporting activity is considered to be a big priority and people such as athletes and coaches make time to train and perform.

Page 15: Unit 11 - Task 3

Equipment

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)

Participation At a participation level there is much less equipment available to use compares to other much high levels of sports performance. An example is training at a park, with an average football, using minimal cones and old park goals. The equipment is cheap and easy to use however it does not promote and help increasing performance.

Performance However at a performance level there is much more equipment available, such as training dummy's, more cones, better more sturdy realist goals and half decent footballs. The equipment is supplied by the club and is good for ensuring performance increases and develops.

Page 16: Unit 11 - Task 3

Financial

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)

Participation At a participation level there is little or no funding to supply anything special and there is a very bad financial structure. This results in a lack of facilities and equipment.

Performance At a performance level there is a little bit more financial structure, perhaps getting sales from tickets and stalls. Also advertisement for the club supply's money which is used to buy equipment and give athletes a better sporting experience. However this is still a huge step away from the elite level where clubs are funded from thousands to millions for wages of playerds and facilities.

Page 17: Unit 11 - Task 3

Scientific support and equipment

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)

Participation At a participation level scientific support and equipment is just not available for such a low level of performance due to not having enough money to pay for specialist things.

Performance At a performance level again scientific support and equipment is just not really available and although they may be able to afford it, it is not one of their priorities to have.

Page 18: Unit 11 - Task 3

Safety

Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)

Participation Throughout sport the safety is always considered massively important whatever the level of sports performance. Coaches and officials will always try their 100% hardest to keep the sport as safe as possible. This could include anything from wearing shin pads when playing to preventing arguments on the pitch.

Performance Performance level is very similar to participation, coaches and officials will play the same roles and safety equipment will always be used. The only main difference I think would be that there are more and more experienced people to help at a higher level of sport performance, for example, maybe two first aiders rather than none for the participation level.
