History of Tour de France

The Tour de France is the oldest multiple stage World Tour and generally considered the most prestigious. The modern editions of the Tour de France consist of 21 day-long segments (stages) over a 23-day period and cover around 3,500 kilometres (2,200 mi).

The Tour de France is an annual multiple stage bicycle race primarily held in France. The race has been held annually since its first edition in 1903 except for when it was stopped for the two World Wars (1915-1919; 1940-1947). The race is a UCI World Tour event: the teams that compete in the race are mostly UCI ProTeams, with the exception of the teams that the organizers invite.

There are 4 main individual classifications contested in Tour de France.

•The most important is the general classification. The cyclist with the least accumulated time is the race leader, the Yellow jersey

•The points classification awards a green jersey. Cyclists get points for finishing among the best in a stage finish, or in intermediate sprints.

•The mountains classification is a special points competition for those riders who climb the most difficult ascents the fastest; points for this classification are won by the first cyclists that reach the top of these climbs.

•The young rider classification, denoted by a white jersey, is calculated the same way as the general classification, but the classification is restricted to riders who were born on or after 1 January 1989
