At the beginning of the decade the idea of standing up on a board with a paddle seemed to be crazy; therefore there were not many boards and paddlers. Clearly, surfing, knee boarding and boating (including kayaking and fishing of course) have always been the main paddling activities. It is a whole different story now... 3. Now, stand up paddleboarding is a competitive sport, engaging more and more people. 4. How do you become a paddleboardracer? Before taking paddleboarding to a higher level, check out some classes. There are different types of races and you might want to get familiar with them before throwing yourself into the ocean. Over the last five years, paddleboarding has been categorised into three classes, including 126 Class, 14Class and Unlimited Class - these incorporate different board lengths. You wouldnt want to race on your 12 board against someone on a 14 board. 5. Rules: Apart from different board lengths, thereare not particularly strict rules or divisionswhen it comes to racing on stand uppaddle boards. The only rules stand uppaddle encompasses is that there arentany rules! If youve got an island - goround that, if youre on a river - then pick aspot upstream, if youre on the open seathen chuck out a buoy or park up a RIB forpeople to go round. ... And paddle, paddle, paddle!
