The 1920s: A Decade for Change Although people had played golf for

hundreds of years prior to the 1920s, this decade marked a significant time for the sport. Due to the devastation following World War I, players left the game's homeland of Scotland and came to the United States, thus introducing the sport to the American populace.

The golfers of this era brought with them a flair that made individuals such as Bobby Jones, Gene Sarazen, and Jim Barnes into national celebrities. These competitors also possessed

advanced skills and won numerous international tournaments, such as the US Open and the PGA Championship.

Another reason for the significant attention given to the sport during this period was the rise of women's golf. British and American athletes Miriam

Burns Horn, Glenna Collett Vare, and Joyce Wethered collected numerous titles and broke records while playing in two-piece dresses.
