Many have stated that it is impossible to know whether ornot we are living in the last days before the second comingof Jesus Christ. However, below you will find dramaticproof that this is the last times. All of the proofs belowtaken together defy coincidence.

1. EUPHRATES RIVER TO BE DRIED UP: InRevelation 16:12,the Bible predictsthat the EuphratesRiver will be driedup to prepare theway for the kingsof the east to in-vade Israel. Thiswill happen at thetime of the battleof Armageddonaccording to verse16 of the same

chapter. The battle of Armageddon will be the final battle atwhich time Jesus Christ will return and fight on the side ofthe nation of Israel. Immediately thereafter He will estab-lish His kingdom and usher in His 1000-year reign ofpeace.On January 13th, 1990, the Indianapolis Star carried theheadline “Turkey will cut off flow of Euphrates for 1month.” The article stated that a huge reservoir had beenbuilt by Turkey. While filling up the reservoir, the flow ofthe Euphrates would be stopped for one month and a con-crete plug for a diversion channel built. These things havenow been done. With this newly built dam, Turkey has theability to stop the Euphrates River at will. The conditionsfor fulfilling this 1900 year old prophecy are now in place!

2. CHINA GOES TO WAR: In Revelation 9:15-16, the Bible prophesies that an army of 200 million

soldiers will launch awar which will kill“the third part ofmen”. Never in thehistory of the world,until our present gen-eration, has therebeen a power onearth that could field200 million soldiers.However, the lateruler of China, MaoTsetung boasted inhis diary that he

could field an army of 200 million. We see that thisprophecy pertaining to the very last times could not everhave been fulfilled until now.

3. WORLDWIDE NUMBERING SYSTEM PRE-DICTED: In Revelation chapter 13, the Bible prophesiesthat a world dictator will soon rule over a world govern-ment. He will cause all people on the earth to receive anumber without which they will be unable to buy or sell.We are seeing this prophecy fulfilled before our eyes in amost astonishing way. Nearly every human being in theworld now has been assigned a number. In America it is oursocial security number. In the last few years we have seenthis number extended to small children. A child without asocial security number cannot be declared as a dependent onan income tax return. We have seen the emergence of elec-tronic money, shopping with credit cards, and many peopleare urging the abolishment of cash. All of these things couldnot possibly have been fulfilled until this present time. Onlyafter the invention of the computer could such a worldwidenumbering system be administered.

4. THE EMERGENCE OF A NEW WORLDORDER: Revelation 13:7 and Daniel 7:23 prophesy the establishment of aworld government.We recently haveseen the term “newworld order” beingused by the leadingpolitical people of ourworld. MikhailGorbachev has madethe term famous, andPope John Paul II hasreferred to it repeat-edly. Finally ourformer President,George Bush, in theChicago Tribune, September 12, 1990, said “Iraq is thefirst test for the new world order.” He stated emphaticallythat the Iraq War is Saddam Hussein against the world. TheUnited Nations troops are continually referred to as themulti-national forces. The decision has been made to estab-lish an interdependent community of nations that will rulethe world under United Nations authority. The Bible saysthat this will lead us into a great world government. We cansee this happening right before our eyes.

COINCIDENCE OR DIVINE PROVIDENCE? TheEuphrates River can be dried up, the necessary 200 millionman army is available, a worldwide numbering system ispossible because of the computer, and now the new worldorder is appearing.

Is it coincidental that all of these major prophecies pertain-ing to the last times are being fulfilled simultaneously?

Hardly!

What is Endtime Magazine?In 1968, Irvin Baxter Jr. discovered the United States and other modern nations in the Bible. He also

found the Berlin Wall in the Bible and that one day it was to be torn down, reuniting Germany, and thatevent would be the catalyst to spark an international movement called the "New World Order." Thesethings have now come to pass.

Irvin Baxter Jr., a Pentecostal minister, began Endtime Ministries in 1986 when he wrote A MessageFor The President, a book explaining the major prophecies of the Bible which he had been teachingsince 1968.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, prophetic fulfillment accelerated rapidly. The decision was made tolaunch Endtime. The purpose of the magazine is to explain the prophecies of the Bible and to showthat they are now being fulfilled in intricate detail.

The Ten-Horned Kingdom and Great BritainI have been reading your book, A Message for the President. I

came upon something that I may be misunderstanding con-cerning the Ten Nation Union. I don’t have too muchknowledge concerning biblical prophecy, but I am trying toimprove in this area. You stated in Chapter 1 that GreatBritain applied for membership to the European CommonMarket. If the lion is supposed to represent Great Britain andGreat Britain is a member of the European Common Market,isn’t Great Britain being represented twice on the beast; onceas the head of the lion and once as a horn on the ten-hornedbeast? Could you please explain this to me?

Tonight, I was sitting around discussing the Palestinian-Jewish issues that are left to be resolved. I couldn’t believe it,but some of them were citing the Jewish people as the trouble.They said that the Jews never had Jerusalem in their posses-sion at any time. They contended that, before the 1948 War,Palestinians lived there and called Jerusalem their city. Is thistrue? He also said the Moslems were planning on building atemple on the site next to the Dome of the Rock. Have youheard anything about this?

Reply: When you refer to Britain being represented twice, I thinkyou are referring to the seven-headed ten-horned beast of Revelation13. It does have the mouth of the lion and the ten horns of the ten-horned kingdom. If the European Union (formerly called theCommon Market) is the ten-horn kingdom and if Britain remainsa member in the European Union, then Britain would then be men-tioned twice in this passage.

In the Daniel 7 prophecy, the ten-horned beast is described asbeing the last kingdom to arise. This could explain why Britain isduplicated. It is also very possible that the European Union will notend up being the ten-nation union. This must be considered sincethe European Union now has fifteen members and is negotiating toadd more.

The Jews possessed Jerusalem from 1004 BC, when King Davidconquered it, until 70 AD when the Romans conquered the city anddrove the Jews out. When Jews began to return to Israel in the early1900’s, it is my understanding that they bought the lands and homesfrom the people living there. When the United Nations partitionedthe Holy Land between Jews and Palestinians in 1947, the UN de-clared that Jerusalem was to be an international city under UNadministration. The Arabs refused to accept this decision andlaunched a war against Israel. The control of Jerusalem has beendetermined by war from that time until this. Negotiations arepresently underway to determine the final status of Jerusalem. Thedeadline that has been set to achieve an agreement on final status isSeptember 13, 2000. These negotiations ultimately will not suc-

ceed. We know this because the Bible prophesies that the world’sfinal battle, Armageddon, will be fought over control of Jerusalem.

The report you received about the Arabs building a templenorth of the Dome of the Rock is not true. They would never ini-tiate such an action. There has been talk about the Jews buildinga temple there. It appears that this is what will happen.

“Sorcery” refers to witchcraftThe scripture says in Revelation 18:23, “...for by thy sor-

ceries were all the nations deceived.” What do you believethat is referring to? I understand “sorcery” in the scripture is re-ferring to drugs. Please respond as soon as possible.

Reply: The word sorcery refers to witchcraft and mysticism.Chapters 17 and 18 of Revelation prophesy of the Vatican.When in Rome several years ago, our Roman Catholic guide toldus that the word Vatican meant the hill of the magicians and thesoothsayers. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing! I knew thatthis scripture said the Vatican would be filled with sorceries, butuntil then I didn’t know that this was the literal meaning of“Vatican.”

“Unity” and the One-World ReligionI’m writing to find out what you think about unity. All of

the world, even Pope John Paul II, is calling for the unity ofCatholics, Buddhists, Muslims, etc. Could it be possible thatthe first beast of Revelation 13:3 is Pope John Paul II? Thescripture says one of the heads of the beast was wounded as itwere unto death. Could the wound be the assassination at-tempt made on the pope’s life in the 80’s that left a mark andwas healed? Could it be that the image in Revelation 14:11 isspeaking about the statue of the Virgin Mary?

Reply: The drive toward unity that we are witnessing in ourworld is the formation of the one-world government and the one-world religious system that is prophesied in scripture. TrueChristians should have no part in it.

The first beast of Revelation 13 symbolizes the coming global po-litical leader, the Antichrist, and his world government. The secondbeast in Revelation 13 represents the False Prophet, the personagethat will be the religious partner of the Antichrist. Whoever is popeat the time of the Antichrist will fill the role of the False Prophet. Weknow this because the global government of the Antichrist will be a

revival of the Holy Roman Empire. There have always been tworulers in the Holy Roman Empire—a political leader and a religiousleader. The political leader has been from Europe and the religiousleader has always been the pope of Rome. It seems almost certainthat the final head of the Holy Roman Empire will be no different.

If Pope John Paul II is to fill the role of the False Prophet,events will have to move very quickly. He will soon be eightyyears old. It is interesting that Pope John Paul II has veneratedMary more than any other pope.

Taking the “Mark of the Beast” accidentallyI really enjoy reading your Endtime Magazines. They are so

true on what is happening in this crazy world. I have alreadyfinished your book, A Message for the President. It really ex-plained a lot to me that I would have never figured out on myown. My family and I are praying for your ministry.

I am using the Understanding the Endtime manual as a wit-nessing tool. I have two Bible studies already. If one personwill hear the gospel and be saved, it will be worth everything.Anyway, one of the men in my Bible study wanted to know ifyou could take the Mark of the Beast accidentally and if itwould literally be the number 666?

If you could let me know as soon as possible, I will tell thesemen.

Reply: Daniel 12:10 states concerning the endtime, “...none ofthe wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.” Therewill be many people that will accept the mark of the beast withoutquestion. That’s the reason it is so important to understand theprophetic events that are unfolding right now.

The mark will almost certainly not literally be 666. Revelation13:18 says, “Let him that hath understanding count the number ofthe beast..." Another passage says the mark will be the name of thebeast or the number of his name.

There are several things I have decided that I will never do. I willnever pledge allegiance to any man except for Jesus Christ. I willnever pledge allegiance to the United Nations or any other worldgovernment organization. And if the phrase “under God” is everomitted from the U.S. pledge of allegiance, I will no longer be ableto take that pledge.

I also will never take a name or number on my body or undermy skin.

The New Jerusalem is the ChurchI have gotten a few of your videos and enjoyed them very

much. Do you think you could explain what Revelation 22:1-2 means? I am very interested in Bible prophecy. Thank you.

Reply: This passage is describing a scene in the New Jerusalem.

Some people believe that the New Jerusalem is a physical city.Others contend that it is a symbolic description of the church. I’mnot positive whether there will be a literal city or not. But I do knowthat the New Jerusalem is a description of the church.

We are able to know this because of Revelation 21: 9-10, "Andthere came unto me one of the seven angels which had the sevenvials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying,Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife. And hecarried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, andshewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out ofheaven from God.”

Notice that the angel promised to show John the Lamb’s wife.Then he showed him the New Jerusalem.

Revelation 22:1 describes a pure river of the water of life in theNew Jerusalem. In John 4:14, Jesus described this same river oflife. "But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shallnever thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a wellof water springing up into everlasting life.”

Revelation 22:17 also describes this water of life as a spiritualthing, “And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, lethim take the water of life freely.”

Revelation 22:2 speaks of the tree of life bearing twelve man-ner of fruits. This has to be referring to the fruit of the spirit thatis produced by all who become a partaker of the tree of life.

Cloning and the SoulYou may have already covered the subject of cloning, but

would you please cover it again sometime in your magazine? Ican see where an animal can be cloned, but I want to knowwhat you think about humans being cloned. The Bible saysthat the soul of a man goes upward, and the soul of an animalgoes downward. I cannot fathom a human being, beingcloned, because we have a soul. How could God allow this tohappen? I also listen to you on short-wave radio. I value youropinion very much.

Reply: If the cloning of a human being actually were accom-plished, it would be my opinion that God would still impart to thathuman being its own unique soul. I seriously doubt that we willhave to worry about this since the time of the Second Coming is sonear.

Remember those heady sixyears when MikhailGorbachev dominatedworld events so completelythat Ted Turner said he was

the greatest world leader in the last 2,000years? The Velvet Revolution, the fall ofthe Berlin Wall, the end of the ColdWar, the birth of the New World Order,a Nobel Peace Prize and the dissolutionof the Soviet Union all occurred in suchrapid succession that it almost took ourbreath away.

Then suddenly he was gone. Did hejust burn himself out? Does such a dy-namic leader become content to just fadeinto the pages of history? Or has he per-haps found other ways to pursue the loftygoals of his much-vaunted New WorldOrder?

Gorbachev left the Soviet Union in1991. He immediately, as though it hadalready been planned, launched theGorbachev Fund. He described the Fundas a think-tank whose purpose was to ex-plore the path that global governanceshould take as mankind progressed intothe interdependent global society.

Working with Maurice Strong,General-Secretary of the highly publi-cized Earth Summit of 1992, Gorbachev

founded an international environmentalorganization called Green CrossInternational. He also managed to benamed president of this new organiza-tion. Since that time, environmentalissues have asserted their dominanceover every business, building project,military activity and individual life.

Green Cross International is no fly-by-night organization. Gorbachev wasimmediately able to enlist Yoko Ono(widow of John Lennon), Olivia NewtonJohn, John Denver, Carl Sagan and

Javier Peres de Cuellar (ex-Secretary-General of the UN) to serve on theboard of directors. His two presidentialadvisors for Green Cross Internationalare Robert Redford and CNN’s TedTurner.

cialist. Interestingly, he owns a 10,000-acre ranch in Colorado that serves as anew-age spiritual retreat for believers inuniversal spirituality. A Zen Buddhisttemple has been built there, Zoroastrianshave a worship center there, as well asmany other like-minded New Age cults.

Kofi AnnanThe deeper we investigate, the

stranger this story becomes. In the early90’s, President Clinton became unhappywith the operation of the UnitedNations. He claimed the organizationwas in desperate need of reform. Usingthe U.S. veto, he blocked the appoint-ment of Boutros Boutros-Ghali for asecond term as UN Secretary-General.He then handpicked his successor—thepresent Secretary-General, Kofi Annan.

Annan proceeded to create a newposition at the UN—Under Secretary-General for UN Reform. He thenannounced the person chosen to reformthe United Nations, preparing it forworld governance in the emerging 21stCentury. Why were we not surprisedwhen he chose New Age, globalist, so-cialist Maurice Strong?

He announced that hewould bestow $1 billion dollars to ad-vance the UN’s mission. This is the sameTed Turner that has controlling interestin Time Warner, which has now enteredinto partnership with America Online(AOL).

Al GoreOnce Strong joined Annan at the

UN, it was decided that a visit to theWhite House would be in order. TheU.S. Congress was refusing to pay closeattention to $1 billion in back dues tothe UN. This had been done in order toprod the UN into accomplishing theneeded reforms. Strong was asked to ac-company Annan to the White House inan attempt to obtain payment becauseStrong had a very close friend in theClinton administration—Vice-PresidentAl Gore. Both Strong and Gore are avidenvironmentalists and globalists. Ofcourse, Gore is the author of his now fa-

mous environmental book, Earth in theBalance.

Timothy WirthTed Turner didn’t want his $1 billion

UN contribution to be wasted. Heneeded someone to administer theproper distribution of the donation.Timothy Wirth, serving as Under-Secretary of State for Global Affairs inthe Clinton State Department, acceptedthe job. However, when we see how in-tertwined the U.S. and the UN reallyare, it becomes clear that, when Wirthleft the U.S. State Department to ad-minister the grant, he was still workingwith the same people toward the samegoals.

of power together. President Clintonhandpicked Kofi Annan; Annan ap-pointed Maurice Strong; Strong is a goodfriend of Al Gore; Strong works hand-in-hand with Mikhail Gorbachev; TedTurner is presidential advisor toGorbachev; Turner donates $1 billiondollars to the UN; Wirth leaves theClinton administration to work forTurner.

You have to admit that this is gettinginteresting! But believe me, we have

only scratched the surface.

Strobe TalbottIn 1992, Strobe Talbott wrote an arti-

cle for Time magazine, entitled, “TheBirth of the Global Nation.” In the arti-cle he stated that U.S. sovereignty as wehave known it will cease to exist in the21st Century. He asserted that all na-tions would soon answer to a singleglobal authority. But why should we careat all what Strobe Talbott says?

Talbott has been very close toPresident Clinton for a long time. Theywere roommates while attending collegeas Rhodes Scholars in London. WhenClinton took office in 1993, one of thefirst things that he did was to makeStrobe Talbott Deputy Secretary of State.Talbott has been the key foreign policyadvisor to Clinton throughout his entireadministration. So one of the most pow-erful members of the U.S. StateDepartment believes that United States’sovereignty is soon to be over!

So who is this Robert Muller? Heworked in the UN for thirty-eight yearsas Assistant UN Secretary-General tothree Secretary-Generals—U Thant,Kurt Waldheim and Javier Peres deCuellar. He wrote so prolifically aboutthe future of the United Nations that hewas given the name “Prophet of theUN.”

Another of Muller’s books NewGenesis-Shaping a Global Spirituality, re-veals Muller’s extreme interest inspiritual things. During one conversationthat I had with Muller, he stated that theworld had gone as far toward unity as pol-itics could carry it. He asserted that totalworld unity could only be completed bycoming together spiritually. That belief iswhat inspired him to write New Genesis.

Another of Muller’s outstandingachievements is the writing of his WorldCore Curriculum. He authored theWorld Core Curriculum in order to pro-vide young people with the globaleducation that he felt they need to com-pete in our increasingly interdependentworld. Muller credits the teachings ofAlice Bailey and the Tibetan teacherDjwhal Khul for providing the basis forthe World Core Curriculum.

Alice BaileyWho is this Alice Bailey? In the early

1920’s she founded a publishing com-pany called Lucifer Publishing Company(You may have heard of Lucifer!). Baileyused her “demonic” publishing companyto disseminate her radical New Age ideasaround the world.

Most people were not inclined to seri-ously consider adopting views producedby Lucifer Publishing. When the nega-tive effects of the company’s namebecame apparent, Bailey shortened thename to Lucis Trust. Amazingly, LucisTrust was headquartered at the UnitedNations Plaza for many years. Recently, itwas moved to Wall Street.

Djwhal KhulOf this entire mysterious web, the

identity of Djwhal Khul is the mostbizarre. Djwhal Khul never existed. Hewas Alice Bailey’s spirit guide. Think of

it! The AssistantSecretary-General tothree Secretary-Generalsof the UN crediting a“spirit guide” and LuciferPublishing for his inspira-tion. No wonder theUnited Nations is so ef-fectively carrying outSatan’s plan of one-worldgovernment!

So how does all thiswork? Djwhal Khul in-spires Bailey; who inspiresMuller; who then writesthe World CoreCurriculum to train ourchildren. In the mean-time, Maurice Strongoperates his New Ageranch, complete with aZen Buddhist temple,while reinventing theUnited Nations, prepar-ing it to rule the world.

Bishop William Swing

Robert Muller stated tome that he felt it was a pity that the po-litical leaders of the world were able tomeet and talk daily at the UN while thespiritual leaders of the world wouldhardly speak to each other. He pointedout that the constant dialogue, whichtakes place at the UN, had enabled theworld to speak together and act togetheras the World Community.

Muller, the “Prophet of the UN,” be-lieved that an organization should becreated that would do for religion whatthe UN has done for the political world.Since Muller had expressed this idea tome, I was not surprised to hear a coupleof years later that the United ReligionInitiative had been launched. RobertMuller, employee of the UN for thirty-eight years, was one of the three originalsigners of the Initiative.

Another signer of the original UnitedReligions Initiative was Bishop WilliamSwing, Episcopalian Bishop of GraceCathedral in San Francisco. Swing hasbecome the driving force behind the

United Religions. He also was one of thespeakers at Mikhail Gorbachev’s GlobalForum in 1996.

Also in 1996, Bishop Swing traveledthe world to assess the level of supportamong the religious leaders of the worldfor a United Religions effort. He metwith the Dalai Lama, the Archbishop ofCanterbury, Archbishop Desmond Tutu,Mother Teresa, the Pope and CardinalFrancis Arinze of Nigeria, the Vatican’sDirector of Inter-Religious Dialogue.What he heard in his discussions con-vinced him that the time for a UnitedReligions Initiative had arrived.

Swing has been holding conferencesand working diligently since that time.As a result, the constitution for theUnited Religions Initiative will be signedJune 26, 2000—the 55th anniversary ofthe signing of the United NationsConstitution. That date was chosen be-cause Swing hopes that the UnitedReligions can do for religion what theUnited Nations has done for the nations

Cardinal Francis Arinze Cardinal Arinze is the Pope’s represen-

tative for inter-religious affairs. Arinzeand Swing have worked together in ad-vancing Interfaithism. Some peoplebelieve that Cardinal Arinze could be-come the next pope upon the death ofPope John Paul II.

Pope John Paul IIPope John Paul II is very much a player

on the world geo-political scene. In thenew Catechism of the Catholic Church(Item #841), the Pope stated, “The planof salvation also includes those who ac-knowledge the Creator, in the first placeamongst whom are the Muslims: theseprofess to hold the faith of Abraham, andtogether with us they adore the one, mer-ciful God, mankind’s judge on the lastday.” With this statement, Pope JohnPaul II came down solidly on the side ofInterfaithism.

He also is a longtime friend and part-ner of Mikhail Gorbachev. On March 9,1992, the New York Times carried an arti-cle by Mikhail Gorbachev titled, “MyPartner, the Pope.”

In U.S. News and World Report on May18, 1992, an interesting article was pub-lished under the title “Papal Promoter.”This report stated, “Pope John Paul II ispromoting Mikhail Gorbachev…to bethe ideal presiding officer of a UnitedEurope.”

A Strong Environmentalist

Baxter: I first heard your name back in1992 when you were chairman of theEarth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Tell us alittle bit about that particular meetingand what came out of it.

Strong: As I mentioned, I have longhad this deep interest in nature — thehuman relationships with nature andhow our relationships with each otherdepend upon and affect nature. So whenthe United Nations decided to conveneits first world conference on the environ-ment in Stockholm, Sweden in 1972,the Secretary-General of the UnitedNations, at that time U Thant, asked meto come in and become Secretary-General of that conference. That meansto manage the conference process itself.That was in 1970. The conference itselfwas in 1972. That conference gave riseto, amongst other things, the establish-ment of the equivalent of a “globalEnvironmental Protection Agency,”called the UN Environment Program. Ibecame the first head of that. I subse-quently went back to my owngovernment. Then in 1990, the UNGeneral Assembly decided to convene anew world conference on the environ-ment and development, because theenvironment and development areclosely linked. I was asked to becomeSecretary-General again. I said that,while happy to help, I think we need anew generation of leadership. It was de-cided, however, that I should do it. Iagreed, and it was a great experience.The conference was held in Rio deJaneiro, Brazil in June 1992. It producedtwo major treaties. One on bio-diversityand one on climate change.

It also produced Agenda 21, which is aprogram to help insure a sustainable fu-ture for the human community in the21st Century, and a series of principles,which we call the Declaration of Rio. Soit ended on a high note. However, theproblem, as with so many other interna-tional agreements, is that there is noenforcement power at the internationallevel. Governments have done somegood things, but on the whole, progresshas been much slower that envisaged. Iwould have to say that despite progress in

many areas, the condition of the patient,being the earth, has deteriorated sincethen. And we are still doing the kind ofthings that are not going to fundamen-tally get us off of that destructivepathway.

Strong Enforcement

Baxter: Do you foresee ever being ableto enact enforcement mechanisms?

Strong: Well, we don’t need enforce-ment mechanisms from the global levelon every little aspect of human life. I ama great believer in the principle of sub-sidiary, which means that everyregulatory or governmental action thathas to be taken is taken at the level clos-est to the people concerned at which itcan be managed effectively. On thatbasis, not everything needs to be done atthe global level. But there are somethings that can only be done at theglobal level—the atmosphere, theoceans, and the common areas beyondnational jurisdiction for example. No in-dividual government, however powerful,can manage them alone. Yet the condi-tion of those common areas, and I thinkparticularly of climate change, the at-mosphere, carbon dioxide andgreenhouse gas content of the atmos-phere, is something that is determined by

actions that happen all over the world.People can draw a border on the groundto separate their country from another,but they can’t draw a border in the at-mosphere. The atmosphere iseverybody’s atmosphere. What people doto it helps or hurts everyone. So there areissues of that kind — climate change andprotecting the sources of bio-diversityaround the world. These are the key toearth’s life systems. Many of them requirea degree of international cooperationthat no government can enforce. Ofcourse, the mechanism for doing this isour treaties and conventions. We have awhole system now of conventions andtreaties; however, we have very, very lim-ited enforcement mechanisms. I have tosay I am a great admirer of America asthe most powerful country in theworld—a country that has given us sucha great example of law and order anddemocracy. But Americans need to re-mind themselves that their governmenthas not always practiced what it preacheson the international level. Some under-takings that it makes, which are ininternational law and treaty commit-ments, frankly aren’t always adhered to.Now when the greatest country of theworld doesn’t abide by its internationalcommitments, that certainly doesn’tmake it very conducive to other coun-tries pursuing and following their

agreements. So there is a huge amount ofwork to be done out there. I am con-vinced that the ordinary American doesnot realize the degree to which the U.Sdoes not adhere to some of the interna-tional laws and treaties. Now, of course,America is not doing that across theboard. In many cases the U.S. is in thelead in these things. But as the mostpowerful country in the world, the pointI am making is not so much criticizingthe U.S., but reminding Americans thatwhat they do or fail to do makes a vastamount of difference. Until the U.S. getssolidly behind the consistent and fair en-forcement of internationalagreements, it is going to be very, veryhard to develop an enforceable systemof international law, which is ab-solutely essential to our future.

A Strong Friendship withGorbachev

Baxter: Maurice, I find myself withquestions bubbling to the top of mymind, because you are such a wealthof information. Out of the EarthSummit at Rio de Janeiro where youwere the chairman, there was an orga-nization born called Green CrossInternational. Mikhail Gorbachev be-came the president of thatorganization. Tell me, how does a mango from being the dynamic, charis-matic, and world-dominating leaderthat Mikhail Gorbachev was, to thetotally different venue of environ-mentalism? What is going on in theheart and mind of MikhailGorbachev?

Strong: Well, you will have to go toMikhail Gorbachev to find out whatis going on in his mind and heart.However, I can tell you what I see, as afriend of his and as one who has beenprivileged to work with him and knowhim. We are joint chairpersons of theEarth Charter Initiative. This is an ini-tiative of his Green Cross Organizationand the organization of which I am thechair, the Earth Council. The EarthCouncil also emerged from the EarthSummit Conference in Rio. WhileGorbachev was still Secretary-General ofthe Communist party and President ofthe Soviet Union, you could read in hismany statements some first clues as to his

real interest in the environment and hisinterest in spirituality. What interestedme while he was still in office was to seethe number of times that he mentionedthe importance of spiritual life, of spiritu-ality. He didn’t talk about religion, but hetalked about spirituality. Later, as I got toknow him, it was quite clear that he hasa real spiritual orientation. It is also clearthat he had a deep interest in the envi-ronmental issue, both personally and inthe sense of being one of the early peopleamongst world leaders to recognize itsimportance to world peace and security,as well as the future of humanity.

Global Spirituality & The Earth Charter

Baxter: When you speak of spirituality,can you describe what that means in aglobal context?

Strong: Well, everyone will have hisown definition, but I define spirituality asthat set of forces which links us to thesource of all life in the cosmos. Peopledefine it in different ways, through reli-gions and through philosophies. Butfundamentally, it really addresses the link

between us as human beings and thelarger forces that created us, which regu-late our life and into which we ultimatelyreturn.

Baxter: Robert Muller wrote a bookcalled, New Genesis: Toward A GlobalSpirituality. He and I discussed this pointwhen he was on our program. We weretalking about the fact that the world hadbeen brought together as far as it couldbe brought together politically throughthe United Nations. He felt the need forsomething beyond that — a global spiri-tuality that could pull nations together.

How is that going to be enacted?

Strong: Well, first of all we have torecognize those basic spiritual con-cepts and moral and ethical valueswhich do have a universal degree ofvalidity, and an almost virtual univer-sal degree of acceptance. Comparethese spiritual concepts with the onesthat divide people because theyinvolve different religious interpreta-tions. My own belief is that there is aninnate universal spirituality that linkspeople. People strive to express it inthe best way possible, and in doing so,they go on different pathways; butthey are still heading for the samemountaintop. We have tried to distillthe essence of these in what we callthe Earth Charter. This is the move-ment started by Mikhail Gorbachevand me as a result of the EarthSummit in Rio, where I had proposedto the governments in attendancethat they should adopt an EarthCharter. The Earth Charter is basi-cally a statement of ethical and moralprinciples designed to guide the be-havior of human beings towards each

They did agreeon a Declaration of Principles, but it did-n’t go nearly as far as we had expected.Following Rio, and then after Mr.Gorbachev left office, we joined to un-dertake a people’s movement to producea People’s Earth Charter. Literally mil-lions of people throughout the worldhave been involved in that process. Wehave developed a Charter now, which isthe product of widespread consultationsand dialogue amongst vastly different

people, who are separated religiously, ide-ologically, geographically and ethnically.But these people have joined in identify-ing those universal spiritual, moral andethical values that they can all sign ontoand that they believe are essential. Thiswill enable us to cooperate in securing afuture for all of us. Now, after three yearsof intensive dialogue and consultations,we have just agreed on the EarthCharter. It happened in March, in Paris,at UNESCO Headquarters. The EarthCharter is not a statement written instone. It is a product of widespread con-sultation. It articulates these universalvalues and principles, but it is not de-signed as a document for people to signonto. Rather it is to serve as a focal pointfor them to examine their own heartsand souls. They should examine theirown life priorities in relation to the EarthCharter and the principles that it articu-lates. They should look at thoseprinciples in terms of how they apply intheir own communities, their own orga-nizations, and how they apply in theirown national life. Then we hope to stim-ulate that kind of educational anddialogue process throughout the world.Then in 2002, on the 10th Anniversaryof the Rio Earth Summit and the 30thAnniversary of the original GlobalEnvironmental Conference inStockholm, we expect to submit this as aPeople’s Earth Charter to the UnitedNations. We don’t necessarily expect theUnited Nations to automatically adoptit. They will hopefully give it blessing,but it will stand on the authority of themillions of people around the world whohave helped to design it and who havehelped to make it a centerpiece of ouruniversal moral and spiritual life. That iswhere it will derive its authority from,and it is well on its way to that now.

Baxter: Maurice, we have interviewedHans Kung on this program. He wrote abook called A Global Ethic for the GlobalPolitic and the Global Economic. He alsowrote a document called “Towards aGlobal Ethic,” which was adopted by theParliament of the World’s Religions in1993. I also know that Bishop WilliamSwing plans to have the Charter signingof the United Religions Initiative onJune 26th of this year. Have these reli-gious leaders had any input into theEarth Charter?

Strong: Very much so. They have beenvery much involved. It has not been con-fined to religious leaders only, but theyhave been very influential indeed. Thiscoming August, just before the specialmillennium session of the UN GeneralAssembly, there will be a MillenniumPeace Summit of Religious & SpiritualLeaders convened in New York, involv-ing spiritual and religious leaders fromthroughout the world. The EarthCharter will be an important agendacenterpiece.

Baxter: So is it possible that theUnited Religions Organization may welllend their influence and maybe even theParliament of the World’s Religions. Thiscould become a document for people to

rally around.

Strong: Absolutely! We have to beclear though. It is not another piece ofsacred writ. It is simply a statement ofethical, moral and spiritual principles. Ithas come about through a very spirituallyexciting process. It should be used as afocal point of education for reflection foraction for determining how we can reori-ent our own actions and our own lives inthe places that we have influence aroundthese basic principles. If people start todo this, the world can be changed.

Strong Reform to the UN

Baxter: Maurice, I am so interested inyou being appointed to UN reform. I

know that President Clinton was verydissatisfied with the United Nations, andhe insisted that there be a new Secretary-General instead of Mr. BoutrosBoutros-Ghali. Clinton wanted UN re-form. Consequently, Kofi Annan becameour Secretary-General of the UnitedNations and appointed you as theUnder-Secretary in charge of UN reform.Can you give us an overview of what thegoals are of this effort? How is it pro-gressing? Where are we right now?

Strong: First of all let me be histori-cally correct here. I was, in fact, directlyin charge under the Secretary-General ofhis UN reform program. I have nowmoved to an advisory role and have un-dertaken to reform a particular UNinstitution, which is the University forPeace in Costa Rica, where I am speak-ing to you from today. The U.S. hadbeen pressing for reform. That is true.But the U.S. wasn’t the only one.People in the UN wanted reform.Usually people in organizations knowwhen they need to be changed eventhough sometimes they resist thechange. So the U.S. wasn’t the onlyone. This certainly wasn’t PresidentClinton’s intention, but some elementsin the U.S. wanted the UN to reformprimarily to reduce its cost. Of coursethat is a worthy goal in itself, but it isnot a sufficient reason for reform. TheUN and its various institutions werecreated just after WWII and in the af-termath of that war. Their compositionlargely reflects the conditions that ex-isted at that time. Those conditionshave changed immensely. We havenow over 185 members in the UN,most of them from the developingworld. Very few developing countrieswere even there when the UN was cre-ated. They were colonies and therefore,not represented. So the world haschanged, and it is only normal that theinstitutions that reflect that would haveto adjust accordingly. Kofi Annan, asSecretary-General, came into his jobknowing that, having more experiencein the organization than any Secretary-General has ever had. Kofi Annan grewup in the UN. Nobody knew the UNbetter. So he was able not just to respondto the President’s call, but to respond tothe basic need for reform, which he, him-self, understood as well as anybody. He

decided, and I think quite realistically,that he had to undertake reform on twoseparate pathways. On the first tract, hetook care of those things that were underhis control as the chief executive officer.Tract two represented those very funda-mental reforms which theSecretary-General was not able to under-take on his own. These he could onlyrecommend to governments, becauseonly governments could undertakethose. It is interesting to observe thateven those governments who keep call-ing for reform are reluctant to undertakefundamental reform themselves.Virtually every single thing on tract onethat was under the authority of the

Secretary-General has been done or is inthe process of being done. Almost noth-ing of tract two has been done.

Baxter: Could you give us some exam-ples of that, Maurice?

Strong: Cutting a third off of adminis-trating costs and putting that money intoa special development fund to help de-veloping countries. Taking thirty

different departments and organizationsof the UN and consolidating them intofive executive decision-making struc-tures. And consolidating differentagencies where the UN functions. TheUN is a big family. There are a lot of dif-ferent organizations, and they often actindividually. We have brought them to-gether into a common UN house, havingthem work cooperatively, and therebyimproving both their effectiveness aswell as sharing costs and efficiencies.

Taxing Matters

Baxter: What lies ahead to be done?

Strong: Well, the biggest singlereforms must be undertaken by govern-ments. For example, theSecretary-General recommended that anumber of committees and governingbodies be consolidated, and some ofthem actually removed. None of thathas been done, and none of it can bedone by the Secretary-General. He canonly recommend. These actions, ofcourse, would not only improve costs,but would also improve effectiveness.Also remember that the UnitedNations is very different than nationalgovernments, in the sense it has no tax-ing power to raise the money that itrequires to do the jobs that are en-trusted to it. ❏

The second half of our interview withMaurice Strong will appear in the next edi-tion of Endtime. Here’s a brief look-ahead at some of his

comments. On revising the UN Security Council:

“The original permanent members werechosen from among the victors in WWII.We need a significant revision of theSecurity Council. It has to be brought to asituation where it reflects real world geopol-itics.” On reforming the veto power: “…perhaps

having it apply only in certain limited cir-cumstances. Or maybe requiring that morethan one country join in the veto to make iteffective. Or providing some basis where theveto could be overridden in the GeneralAssembly by a two-thirds majority.”

On getting the U.S. to surrender sover-eignty: “No nation has to surrendersovereignty. But it is in the U.S.’s interest inmany cases to make that decision.”

It’s the next obvious step — a cash-less society. Virtually everyonewants it. Almost nobody is againstit. And by the way, it’s prophesiedin the Bible.

Money has become a relic of the past.May we please have a moment of silence?Your usefulness has come and gone. Youare leaving this cold, cruel world andbeing replaced by a string of ones and ze-roes. We will miss you.

What is cash, anyway? When you sellsomething, you get it. When you buysomething, you give it. Cash is what youhold onto between acts of selling andbuying. Why do you accept it from peo-ple? It’s because you believe that cash hasa value and that everyone recognizes thisvalue. Why do people take it from you?Because they believe it has a value, too.

Cash is what you temporarily holdonto between sales and purchases. Howmuch time does a person hold onto cashthese days? Not much. With the inven-tion of the computer, the Internet, smartcards and other technological advances,the amount of time a person needs in-terim cash is approaching nil. Cash isquickly becoming unnecessary. In fact,the only reason it’s really still around isbecause the masses aren’t ready to partwith it completely— yet.

Living in a cashless society has manyobvious benefits. Convenience, safety,reduced crime and cost savings are but afew. What’s not to like?

Ask the government. They have somemajor problems with the emerging cash-less society. You see, the technologies are

coming together in a way that is enablingindividuals and corporations to movetheir money to any place in the world, atthe speed of light, and (here’s the kicker)without the knowledge of Big Brother.And what Big Brother doesn’t know, BigBrother can’t tax.

The ramifications are clear. The gov-ernment’s very existence is beingthreatened, and the government knowsit. Their traditional methods of tracingthe financial activities of citizens andcriminals alike are coming to an end. It’sa new day. Technology has passed themby.

What will Big Brother do?Government has two choices. First, itcan hope for its citizens to voluntarilycome forth with all of the informationneeded in order to levy its taxes. Sure.Their second option is to take a strolldown Intrusion Boulevard. They can at-tempt to compile a detailed record ofevery financial transaction for every per-son in the country. The justification forthis violation of liberty would be in thename of tax collection and crime pre-vention.

Another headache that technologyhas given the governments of the worldis free speech. The Internet is a big, widesuper-information highway that trans-mits any kind of message quickly andefficiently—including politically-incor-rect ones. It’s cheap, it’s anonymous andtotalitarian systems don’t like it toomuch. But they can’t stop it.

They can, however, control it.Got the picture? Good. Now let’s look

at the prophecy. Revelation 13:16-17 describes an

endtime cashless society. In it, nobodywill be allowed to buy or sell unless hehas some sort of mark. This mark will bea person’s entry ticket into the economy.An economy is a place where you buyand sell things — like food, for instance.

The context of the chapter tells us thatthis economy will be a global economy,and the mark—well, the mark will notbe good. It’s called the mark of the beast,and the beast—well, the beast will be theleader of a global government. In fact,

the power ofthis world gov-ernment willcome fromSatan himself.

Bringing thisall together, theprophecy statesthat, in order togain entry intothe comingglobal econ-omy, a personwill have totake on themark of Satan.This, for obvi-ous reasons,will result ineternal damna-tion. After all,it’s what oneshould expectfor taking onthe mark ofSatan.

The prophecyreads like this:“And hecauseth all,both small andgreat, rich andpoor, free andbond, to re-

ceive a mark in their right hand, or intheir foreheads: And that no man mightbuy or sell, save he that had the mark, orthe name of the beast, or the number ofhis name.”

It is more than a coincidence that weare living today on the brink of a globalcashless society. A worldwide economicsystem is being established, as we speak,that will have the ability to lock people

out if they don’t have the password. Thepassword will be a number, and you willonly be issued your number by agreeingto play by the rules of the New WorldOrder. Unfortunately for Bible-believingChristians, the rules will require takingan unbiblical oath that will, in effect,deny Jesus as your exclusive Lord andSavior. This is the reason why taking themark of the beast will result in eternaldamnation.

What will the mark be like? The Biblesays it could be a mark, or it could be thename of the beast, or it may even be thenumber of his name. And that numberwill be 666.

How will one calculate the number ofsomeone’s name to be 666? We don’tknow at this time. Revelation 13:18 saysit will take wisdom. “Here is wisdom. Lethim that hath understanding count thenumber of the beast: for it is the numberof a man; and his number is Six hundredthreescore and six.”

It is apparent from the prophecies thatthe governments of this world willchoose to exercise intrusive measuresupon the emerging computerized cash-less society. If you want to play the game,you’ll have to get your number.Mythological, you say? Try getting a jobwithout a social security number. Tryopening a bank account. Try buying landor getting a dentist to fix your teeth.Welcome to the 21st Century, wheremyths become realities.

A cashless society is a technologicalinevitability. It’s already in place. Willthe government control this cashless so-ciety? That, too, is inevitable. They’realready working on it.

It’s time to slap on your Nikes, grabyour sword and start spreading the GoodNews. You’re running out of time. ❏

Ever since the patent rights for “Digital Angel” were ac-quired late last year by Applied Digital Systems of PalmBeach, Florida, many in the Christian community have

been alarmed that this product will become the mechanism usedby the Antichrist to fulfill the mark of the beast prophecy.

DigitalAngel.net, Inc. is a subsidiary of ADS. Its president, Dr.Peter Zhou, is also the chief scientist for the computer chip im-plant device. In an interview with WorldNetDaily.com heresponded to concerns from the Christian community. “I am aChristian, but I don’t think [that argument] makes sense. Thepurpose of the device is to save your life and improve the qualityof life. There’s no connection to the Bible.”

In comparing Digital Angel to pacemakers, he said,“Pacemakers used to be seen as bizarre, but now they are part ofeveryday life. Digital Angel will be received the same way. A fewyears ago there may have been resistance, but not anymore.People are getting used to having implants.”

ADS President Richard Sullivan added, “No one will be forcedto wear Digital Angel. We live in a voluntary society.”

When a true global economy is finally established, which willnot be long from now, the Christian community may want to re-voice its concerns. If this Digital Angel technology falls under thecontrol of the New World Order’s global economy, Christiansshould indeed be speaking loudly at that time.

It would be of interest to note that a special TechnologyPioneers Award was recently given to Applied Digital Systemsfrom the World Economic Forum for its contributions to “world-wide economic development and social progress throughtechnology advancements.” Global economy planners apparentlysee the potential of Digital Angel for the future global economy.

And that’s scary! ❏

Perhaps we shouldn’t say it. Maybe themore prudent course would be to play itsafe and hold our tongue. Yet how cananyone justify silence when the Bibleplainly prophesies a holocaust in whichone person out of three will die?Believing that the time for this propheticfulfillment is at hand (whether thatmeans four months or five years from

now), doesn’t this call for the mobiliza-tion of every resource at our disposal towarn a world of the coming catastrophe.

An army of 200 million?The prophecy clearly says that an army

of 200 million will participate in the warthat kills one-third part of men. Onlyone nation has ever possessed the neces-sary population base to place an army of200 million on the battlefield. The lateleader of China, Mao TseTung, stated inhis diary that China could field an armyof 200 million soldiers, the exact numberin the prophecy.

Taiwan’s elections move areacloser to war

Three days before Taiwan’s March18th elections, Chinese Prime MinisterZhu Rongji warned the people of Taiwannot to choose the “independence candi-date.” He was referring to ChenShui-bian, candidate for the DemocraticProgressive Party (DPP).

Zhu said that under no circumstanceswould China tolerate the independenceof Taiwan, while the Chinese militarysaid: “Taiwan independence means war.We are prepared to pay any price to pro-tect the peaceful reunification of themotherland.”

Chen replied, “We do not accept ‘oneChina, two systems.’ We oppose becom-

ing the second Hong Kong or secondMacau. We have independent sover-eignty,” he said.

Chen was the clear target of Zhu’sthreat that whoever proposes Taiwaneseindependence will “not end up well.” “Ifthe Taiwan independence forces comeinto power it could trigger a war betweenthe two sides of the strait,” Zhu said.

When the people of Taiwan votedthree days later, they chose Chen Shui-bian.

Chinese-American War?With tensions presently escalating

sharply over Taiwan and with the U.S.pledged to defend Taiwan, the possibilityof a nuclear conflict between China andthe United States is very real.

On February 23, 2000, The WashingtonPost published an article, “PentagonIssues Warning to China.” The articlestated, “A top Pentagon official yesterdaywarned China that it would face ‘incal-culable consequences’ if it followedthrough on threats to use force againstTaiwan.”

Also on February 23, 2000, CNNNews reported a statement by WhiteHouse spokesman Joe Lockhart, “Wehave repeated, in I think both actionsand words, that we view any threat toTaiwan with grave concern.”

Lockhart said, “…the country wouldnot hesitate to respond if China attacksTaiwan. In 1996 we responded appropri-ately to what we viewed was a threat.That should give you some indication ofhow we view this situation.”

A few days later on February 29, 2000,The Washington Times published an arti-cle entitled “China Threatens U.S. withMissile Strike.” The article stated,“China stepped up its war of words overTaiwan yesterday, bluntly threatening tofire long-range nuclear missiles at the

summed it up this way, “A conflict is in-evitable because the Taiwanese won’treunify with communist China, andBeijing won’t settle for anything less.”

How did we arrive at this dangerous juncture?

China has stated repeatedly over thelast fifty years that there is one Chinaand that Taiwan is a renegade provinceof that one China. She has insisted thatsomeday Taiwan must reunite with theMainland. However, it appeared that theuneasy co-existence between Taiwan and

the Chinese Dragon just 100 miles awaymight be allowed to continue until some-day it would hopefully just work itselfout.

Since 1972, the United States govern-ment has assented to this “One China”policy—with one condition. The pro-jected reunification must be donethrough peaceful diplomacy, not throughwar. Congress passed the TaiwanRelations Act in 1979, which obligatedthe U.S. to supply Taiwan with the nec-essary military equipment to defendherself against invasion.

The turning point came in 1996 whenTaiwan held its first democratic elec-tions. The last thing the communistdictatorship on the Mainland wantedwas for the dreaded disease of democracyto take root in China, and the Mainlandinsisted that Taiwan was an inseparablepart of China.

In an attempt to scare Taiwan out ofholding the elections, China fired mis-siles just off the coast of Taiwan while atthe same time threatening invasion.President Clinton sent two aircraft carri-ers and 100,000 troops into the Straits ofTaiwan. China was forced to back down.

Beijing is prepared for a nuclear war against the UnitedStates if Washington “would dare to stand in the way” ofChina’s reunification, a military-backed weekly has warned.

In such a possible Sino-U.S. war over Taiwan, Washingtonwould be subject to tremendous losses in human casualties aswell as in its global and regional interests, warned an article inthe latest issue of the Military Review Weekly.

The magazine is an official publication with retired People’sLiberation Army generals, including for Chief of GeneralStaff Yang Chengwu, operating as its honorary publishers oradvisers. The article quoted unnamed military experts as say-ing that China would use nuclear weapons if the U.S. “daredto stand in the way” of the country’s reunification. “China, tosafeguard its national interests, has prepared for a nuclear waragainst the United States,” it said.

Although China’s weaponry in general could not matchWashington’s, it had its strong points, the paper said. Chinahad world-class spy satellites and its space chip-launchingtechnology would enable its missiles to break though theU.S.’ National Missile Defense System to strike U.S. territory.

China also leads the world in miniaturization of the neu-

tron bomb. Such bombs would be very difficult for U.S. air-craft carriers to defend against, the article said. When thePLA launched war games and test-fired missiles into watersoff Taiwan in mid-1995 to early 1996 to intimidate the is-land’s voters before the first presidential election, the U.S.responded by sending two aircraft carrier battle groups to thearea. In a war without boundaries the U.S. would suffer un-bearable human causalities, it said.

When such a Sino-U.S. war started, China would then nolonger honor its commitment on non-proliferation. "Andthen if countries like Iraq, Iran or North Korea obtain missiletechnology from China, the U.S. would be under globalthreat,” it said. “The enemy’s enemy is our friend.” Chinawould then ally with countries, which had been bullied, suchas Iran, Iraq, Yugoslavia, Libya and Cuba. It would even bepossible for China to form a military alliance with Russia, andperhaps India, the article said.

It also warned Japan not to provide logistical support to theU.S. military in a Sino-U.S. war over Taiwan. If they did,Beijing would see it as Tokyo's declaration of war againstChina and then Japan would become part of the battlefield.The U.S. would also suffer great economic losses in the regionas the mainland's market “is far more important to the U.S.economy than Taiwan’s.”

China ‘Ready for Nuclear War’ Over Taiwan

order with Russia for two Sovremenny-class destroyers. These warships areequipped with nuclear missiles that cansink the U.S. aircraft carriers with oneshot. China took delivery of the firstSovremenny in February of 2000 and isscheduled to receive the other one laterthis year.

In the meantime, another event con-tributed to the escalation of tensionsacross the Straits of Taiwan.Negotiations for the eventual reunifica-tion of Taiwan with the Mainland werescheduled to begin in August of 1999. InJuly of 1999, Taiwan’s President Lee at-tempted to establish Taiwan’s position ona German talk radio show. He stated thatChina should negotiate with Taiwan ona state-to-state basis.

Chinese leaders went ballistic. Theyprotested that Lee’s statement was a defacto declaration of independence andwas therefore a cause for war unless it wasretracted. President Lee stood firm andno retraction was forthcoming. Chinaimmediately began to threaten invasionof Taiwan.

In August, a secret paper was issued toChinese military officers instructingthem to prepare for war with Taiwan andthe United States.

In September, Chinese forces con-ducted a mock invasion of Taiwan.During the exercise, troops chanted, “Wewill liberate Taiwan.”

On October 1, 1999, China held ahuge parade in Tiananmen Square com-memorating the 50-year anniversary ofthe communist takeover in China.Intercontinental ballistic missiles withnuclear warheads capable of reaching theUnited States were displayed in the pa-rade. Soldiers carried a huge banner inthe parade that read, “We will not waitforever to liberate Taiwan.”

Then came all the threats andcounter-threats during the Taiwaneseelection campaign. With the election ofpro-independence candidate Chen Shui-bian, China has suddenly been throwninto a quandary. Does she make good onher threats to invade or should she con-tinue to depend on diplomacy to pursuethe unification of Taiwan to theMainland?

The latest position taken by China isthat they will wait to see what PresidentChen says in his May 20 inauguralspeech and what he does. They say that,

if reunification talks do not begin withina few months, they will invade Taiwan.

President-elect Chen has been verycareful about making any statement thatmight anger the Chinese. The last thingTaiwan wants is war with the Mainland.Yet he has refused to agree to the oneChina policy that China says must be ac-cepted in order to avert war.

So what will happen?We all would like to believe that

cooler heads will prevail and that ten-sions between Taiwan and China willdissipate. However, the prophecy ofRevelation 9:15-16 and the opinion ofthe secular experts seem to indicate justthe opposite. It seems certain that we areheaded straight toward the most horrificwar ever experienced by the human race.

The only remaining question is“When?” ❏

Biometrics means “automatically rec-ognizing a person using distinguishingtraits.” Fingerprints and retinal scans aretwo such examples. Reading an im-planted chip is another.

The Biometric Consortium (www.bio-metrics.org) serves as the U.S.Government’s focal point for research,development, testing, evaluation and ap-plication of biometric-based personalidentification technology. While onewould hope that the Department ofCommerce would have the greatest in-terest in this technology, the branches ofthe government most actively involvedwith biometrics are the FBI, NationalSecurity Council, Department ofDefense and Department of Justice.

Wiring the WorldFord has made PC’s and Internet

hook-ups available to its 350,000 em-ployees for $5 per month, and DeltaAirlines made a similar pledge. Intel hasjust announced it will give all its employ-ees PCs and Internet access and servicesat no charge.

By the end of the year, more than70,000 Intel employees worldwide willreceive Pentium III processor-based ma-chines, unlimited Internet access andother computer products, including aprinter, monitor and software packages.

Criminals trying to transport their ill-gotten profits out of the country will

need bigger suitcases and stronger mus-cles. The next largest denomination isthe $100 bill, worth about $69. The loadwould become ten times as great.

e-purseA smart card has just been developed

that can verify its owner through finger-print verification or iris recognition. It isbeing called e-purse. The smart card isbased on a technology known as biomet-rics, and was developed by KeywareTechnologies as a way to combat fraudand other security issues.

The biometrics can be used in con-junction with PINs (personalidentification numbers) and passwordsand, according to the company, cannotbe duplicated by impostors.

A release date for this invention hasyet to be announced.

Gorbachev Calls Pope “MostImportant Socialist in the World”

In his address, former Soviet presidentMikhail Gorbachev said, “Globalizationcan also have destructive effects but wemust pursue, as the pope says, its positive

aspects. Wherever John Paul II goes onhis trips, he will always speak of the poorand of solidarity. He is the most impor-tant socialist in the world.”

Prince Charles — Defender of Interfaith

Ecumenism and the spirit of compro-mise has swept into the royal family ofGreat Britain. For the last 1,000 years,the King of England would swear to up-hold the Protestant faith at hiscoronation ceremony. When PrinceCharles of Wales is crowned King, how-ever, it appears that it will be amulti-faith inauguration ceremony.

The issue is religious discrimination.The establishment of the Church ofEngland causes “religious disadvantage”to other faiths and Christian denomina-tions. The current coronation ceremonymay no longer be appropriate in modern,multi-cultural Britain, a government re-port says.

The King’s role as Supreme Governorof the Anglican Church and “Defenderof the Faith” is also to be reviewed. Thereport argues that the union betweenchurch and state may not be “the best orthe most appropriate way forward interms of the need to embody the princi-ples of equity, inclusivity andparticipation in the contemporary pluralsociety of the United Kingdom.”

Tony Blair has become increasingly in-terested in the relationship betweenChristianity and other faiths. The gov-ernment would almost certainly resistsevering the link altogether, but seniorfigures think other religions should havea greater role in national life, just as rep-resentatives of other faiths are to begiven seats in the House of Lords alongwith Anglican bishops.

The Church of England is itself con-sidering ways to be more “inclusive.” TheArchbishop of Canterbury, Dr. GeorgeCarey, is reported to have told an audi-ence in his diocese that he expects thechurch one day to have its status andprivileges reduced.

Israel is China’s second largest militaryequipment supplier.

“The support of the Palestinians’ justcause will remain one of the pillars ofChinese policy, remarked Jiang in hismeeting with Chairman Yasser Arafat.“The Chinese people will always remainan honest friend which the Palestinianscan depend on.”

He added that the Palestinians hadmade considerable progress towards “thegreat objective of establishing an inde-pendent state.”

Chernobyl: Many Men Would Die… And Are

Ukraine’s Health Ministry has releaseda report detailing the mounting deathharvest of the 1986 Chernobyl NuclearPower Plant Meltdown. About 3.5 mil-lion people have suffered illness due tothe contamination. One-third of theseare children. Some cancers are occurringat ten times the national average.

“The health of the people affected bythe Chernobyl accident is getting worseand worse every year,” reported DeputyHealth Minister Olha Bobyleva. “We arevery disturbed.”

The Third Trumpet prophecy statesthat a star by the name of Wormwoodwould bring forth the same type of dev-astation as was wrought by Chernobyl. Itis not a coincidence that the Ukrainianword for wormwood is chernobyl.

Albright Plays Environmentalism Card

U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine

Albright has found another platformfrom which to promote global gover-nance — water. She struck thisenvironmental chord in a speech inSingapore on Earth Day, April 11, whenshe proposed the creation of a globalwater security alliance.

“The goals of our alliance must be todramatically improve the managementof transboundary water resources, elimi-nate water as a source of regionalinstability and use cooperation on wateras a basis for bringing nations together onother issues,” Albright said.

Albright is aware that water is one ofthe major issues in the Middle East peaceprocess. Israel has it. The Palestiniansdon’t.

This is yet another case of a worldleader invoking the cause of environ-mentalism to further the case for theestablishment of a one-world govern-ment.

Reform Jewish Rabbis Sanction Gay Marriages

Judaism’s most liberal branch, Reform,became the first major religious denomi-nation to sanction and officiate same-sexunions. An overwhelming majority ofthe 500 members of the CentralConference of American Rabbis ap-proved a resolution backing any rabbi’sdecision to preside over a gay unionthrough “appropriate Jewish ritual.”

Understanding the issue’s sensitivity,the rabbis also support those within itsranks who choose not to officiate at suchceremonies.

Rabbi Paul Menitoff, CCAR’s execu-tive vice president, said, “These arepeople who are subjected to signals, sub-tle and not so subtle, that they areabnormal, sinful and less than whole.Can you imagine the impact on them tofinally hear a confirming message after somany negative messages from all thosereligious groups?”

One rabbi who opposed the move didso on interesting grounds. “I am comfort-able concluding that marriage in Judaism

is a relationship between one man andone woman, in spiritual reclamation ofthe Garden of Eden,” said Rabbi CliffordLibrach of Sharon, Massachusetts.“Other relationships may have great in-tegrity and be worthy of celebration anddistinction, but they are not marriages.”

Clearer-thinking opponents argue thatthe resolution violates the teachings ofthe Torah (a.k.a. Old Testament). “Thesanctification of a marriage between twopeople of the same sex would not be ap-propriate,” remarked Rabbi JeromeEpstein, a leader in ConservativeJudaism. “The Torah clearly prohibitsthat.”

In 1990, Reform Judaism voted to or-dain openly gay rabbis, endorsing theview that “all Jews are religiously equalregardless of sexual orientation.”

Reform Judaism, while a large move-ment in the United States, does notrepresent Judaism at large, and accountsfor less than 5% of Jews in Israel.

For many years, Pope John PaulII has wanted to visit the HolyLand. Understanding the sym-bolic impact of entering thenew millennium, he decided to

make the trip in the Year 2000. Hisstated goal for this pilgrimage was to pro-mote ecumenism and Interfaithism. Inthe twilight years of his life, he wouldlike to be a catalyst for religious unity.

His plan was to emphasize the thingsthat Muslims, Jews and Christians havein common. To do this, Pope John Paulplanned to begin his journeys by travel-ling to Ur of Chaldees, the birthplace ofAbraham. All three religions revereAbraham as the father of the faithful.

John Paul’s plan was detoured whenSaddam Hussein refused entry into Iraqwhere Ur of Chaldees is located. Not tobe deterred, the Pope arranged for a vir-tual tour of the birthplace of Abrahamvia video.

The second leg of Pope John Paul II’splan took him to Egypt and Mt. Sinai.Jews, Muslims and Christians all believethat Moses was given the law there. Theyalso all look to Moses as a prophet.

During all these travels, the messagehad been emphasized continuously—Jews, Muslims and Christians all worshipthe same God through their commonorigin—Abraham.

Finally, came the Holy Land itself. The

crowning moment of the visit occurredwhen Jews, Muslims and the Pope cametogether for their Interfaith service.Broadcast around the world, the messagewas unmistakable…We have differentbeliefs, but we all worship the one God ofAbraham. If this message can be success-fully sold to the people of the world, thenwe are only a hop, skip and a jump fromworld religious unity.

This move toward Interfaithism didn’tbegin with Pope John Paul’s trip to theHoly Land. This effort toward global re-ligious unity has been progressing for a

long time. In 1994, the Roman CatholicChurch issued its first new catechism in400 years. A most interesting paragraphwas included in the catechism regardingthe Muslims. “We acknowledge that theplan of salvation includes those whoworship the one God of Abraham, in thefirst place amongst whom are theMuslims.”

agreement with Yasser Arafat that no na-tion has the right to take unilateralaction with regards to the status ofJerusalem. It was shocking that the Popewould make such a declaration just amonth before heading to Israel. Yet PopeJohn Paul II has always felt that theCatholic Church should have a voice inthe control of Jerusalem.

One thing makes this move very inter-esting. Scripture teaches plainly that theperson who is pope at the time of theAntichrist will be the False Prophet. TheAntichrist and the False Prophet will ul-timately make war against Jerusalem atArmageddon. This makes it very inter-esting that the Pope felt compelled tosign the pact against Israeli sovereigntyover Jerusalem.

Marching Toward Armageddon:Present status of Mideast peace negotiations

When the Sharm el-Sheik agreementwas signed between Israel and thePalestinians on September 4, 1999, thedate for a framework agreement on finalstatus issues was set for January 13, 2000.When it became obvious that theJanuary 13th date was going to be missed,a new date in May was agreed upon. Nownegotiators are saying it might be Junebefore the framework agreement can becompleted.

The hope is that by September 13,2000, a comprehensive agreement can bereached on all remaining issues. Theseinclude the final status of the City ofJerusalem and final borders betweenIsrael and a yet-to-be-establishedPalestinian state.

Two major issuesTwo major sticking points remain in

the negotiations: 1. What will happen tothe Jews that have settled in the WestBank since the 1967 War? 2. Who willultimately control Jerusalem?

Settlements in the West BankOne hundred forty-four settlements

have been established in the West Bankby Israel since the Six-Day War of 1967.Somewhere between 140,000 and180,000 Jews presently live in theseareas. These settlements are not com-posed of tents or trailers that can beeasily disbanded. Some of them are beau-tiful towns of ten to twenty thousand

population. Many of the homes there arevalued at between $100,000 and$500,000 each.

The Palestinians contend that everyone of these settlements must be turnedover to Palestinian control. They insistthat Jewish residents will have to make achoice to either abandon their homesand move to Israel, or live in the newlycreated Palestinian state underPalestinian control.

Israel says that she is unwilling toabandon many of these settlements andthat they must remain under Israeli con-trol.

Future of JerusalemDispute over Jerusalem is not a new

thing. More wars have been fought overJerusalem, forty in all, than over anyother city on the face of the earth. TheJewish people disagree on almost every-thing. But there is one thing on which95% of Israelis agree—Jerusalem mustnever be divided or shared. It must beIsrael’s capital and remain under Israelisovereignty forever.

On the other hand, the Palestiniansare adamant that they must have at leastEast Jerusalem for the capital of theirPalestinian State. They insist that theTemple Mount must remain underPalestinian control and that a Jewishtemple can never be built there.

These two positions are diametricallyopposed to each other. That’s the reasonthe Mideast peace negotiations continueto be so difficult.

What is prophesied to happen?In Matthew 24:15-21, Jesus prophesied

that those living in Judea during thetimes right before His coming wouldhave to run for their lives or be slaugh-tered. Judea is the area where a large partof the settlements are located. He said“Then let them which be in Judaea fleeinto the mountains: Let him which is onthe housetop not come down to take anything out of his house: Neither let himwhich is in the field return back to takehis clothes…For then shall be greattribulation, such as was not since the be-ginning of the world to this time, no, norever shall be.” This prophecy seems toindicate that most of the settlements willbe given to Palestinian control.Apparently, many Jews will choose to re-main in their settlements, even as thedangers escalate. As Jesus said, this willresult in terrible times for those who dochoose to remain.

An agreement on the settlements mayprove to be possible. But what aboutJerusalem? There appears to be no hopefor solving the Jerusalem conflict. TheJews don’t intend to share it, and Arafatsays there will be no peace unless theydo.

What does the Bible tell us about whatwill happen to Jerusalem? Zechariah 14:2indicates that Jerusalem will be the issueover which the Battle of Armageddonwill be fought. This will take place atleast seven years from now—maybemore. This lets us know that theJerusalem issue is not going to be perma-nently resolved. It will ultimatelyexplode in the world’s face.

Apparently Israeli Prime MinisterEhud Barak realizes that an agreementon Jerusalem is not possible at this time.He recently offered to give thePalestinians 90% of the West Bank ifthey would agree to postpone for severalyears dealing with Jerusalem. This “trialballoon” sent up by Barak apparently didnot fly with the Palestinians. Their nego-tiators rejected it immediately. However,don’t be too sure this won’t yet occur. Itappears to reflect the course that theBible prophesies will, in fact, take place.

If 90% of the West Bank is given toPalestinian control and the Jerusalemissue put on hold, this would explain theprophesied conflagration in Judea andthe continuing festering of the Jerusalemissue until the time of Armageddon. ❏
