What is Tawur Agung?
“An important and beautiful Hindu
ritual held on the eve of Nyepi in
which the evil spirits are scared
away by a ceremony of offerings,
blessings, and ritual.”(http://www.borobudurpark.com/temple/tawurAgung)
Tawur Agung is also said to be the
‘graduation day’ of the earth before
the upcoming year of saka. Tawur
Agung itself is actually one unity
with the previous ritual, Melasti.
The third is Catur Brata Penyepian
and the last is Dharma Santi Nyepi.
Melasti
This ritual is done 2 or 3 days before
Nyepi. Lake & ocean are believed to be
the sources of pure water (tirta
amarta), that is why all the tools or
utilities used for praying in Pura are
brought to the lake or to the beach for
purification.
Catur Brata Penyepian
This is basically the first day of the Saka
calender. At this day, hindusts stay at
home and fast for the whole day. This
ritual is done to symbolize that to start
something new, everything should be
white and pure.
Dharma Santi Nyepi
This is the celebration after being able
to control inner desires or passions
during the Catur Brata Penyepian at the
previous day.
1. The order / steps of Tawur Agung
The ritual started by taking Tirta Suci
from Ratu Boko temple and delivered it
to Prambanan temple by walking. This
walking delivery took about 1 hour,
started from 6.30 to 7.30 AM.
The second step was Pradaksina. Tirta
Suci, that was taken from Ratu Boko
temple, was carried by Hindusts to
round Shiwa temple 360 degree 3 times
to the right. After that, Tirta Suci was
given to the Prambanan temple’s
representative.
The next step was Dharma Wacana.
Dharma Wacana is Hindu’s term for
religious speech. The speech was
delivered by Drs. I Ketut Wiyana, M.Ag.
The main topic of the speech was the
meaning of Melasti, Tawur Kesanga, and
Nyepi.
The next was art show;
• Sesaji Candi Dance
• Ogoh-ogoh & Gunungan Show
• Sacred Reog Dance by children
After the art show, there were some
speeches delivered by
1. Head of PHDI, Mayjen Sang Suwisma
2. Governor of Central Java, Ganjar Pranowo
3. Minister of Religion, Suryadharma Ali
After the speeches, the Minister of Religion
and the Governor of Central Java were given
awards.
The last was Parama Shanti, a ritual placed right before leaving Pura. It is done by placing both palms on top of each other equally, no one higher or lower., to respect others or sacred creatures. This ritual can have either one or both of these two reasons / meanings; the final / closing of praying and the symbol of spiritual peace which is owned after praying.
2. Activities hidden from the participants
According Mr. Sukarman, one of the
committees, there wasn’t any activity hidden
from the participants. All are shown.
3. Official speeches
The theme for Tawur Agung in Prambanan
this year was: ‘By applying Dharma
Negara, we make harmony through
Nusantara’
This theme was chosen because this year
Indonesians will vote for their parliament
members and President for the next 5 years.
The speeches delivered during Tawur Agung
emphasized the importance of using the right
to vote. Mayjen Sang Suwisma gave advice to
the hindusts to use their rights to chose their
leaders. There were some ‘political jokes’
that were said by Minister of
Religion, Suryadharma Ali as well.
