Your choice of a disc jockey will be one of the most important decisions you'll have to make when planning your wedding reception. Out of all of the elements that go into a reception, people will judge the success of your reception based on the entertainment you provide. But how do you find a great disc jockey? Ideally, if you've attended a recent wedding reception where you personally observed a good disc jockey, your decision would be easy. However, this often is not the case. Ask family and friends if they've ever used or have seen a professional wedding disc jockey. Ask the manager of the venue that's hosting your reception which DJ companies they recommend. Banquet facilities see all types of disc jockeys every weekend; they know who the good ones are. Make sure you know who your actual disc jockey will be. Most DJ companies employ many disc jockeys with varying degrees of ability and specialization. Ask how many years of wedding disc jockey experience they have.

How do you go about choosing a good wedding disc jockey? Although many DJ companies offer videos of their Dl's (very difficult to judge how good the DJ is once

edited) or ask you to "crash" an actual wedding reception to see their DJ (a very poor practice), the best way to judge a prospective disc jockey is to arrange a personal face-to-face meeting with them in their studio. This will allow you to determine if you'll be comfortable with them and to get a feel for his/her personality. You'll be able to assess their appearance, speaking

ability, music IQ and reception knowledge. You'll also be able to judge the quality of the sound system and preview their light show. In addition to the live preview, ask the DJ company for 5-7 references of past clients who have used the specific disc jockey who'll be at your reception. Call the references and ask about the quality of their performance.

Your DJ company should provide you with a Reception Planner or checklist so you can choose the events you want to occur at your reception. They should also provide you with a music play list so you can select the songs you want played and they should accept music requests from your guests that night to help your DJ "read the crowd." Lastly, a contract should be used so that everything is agreed to in writing.
