INTRODUCTION:

―The Fruit of the Word‖. Why is the most Christian-educated generation in all of church history

so devoid of the fruit we should reasonably expect to find?”

George Barna has pointed out, in study after study, that the way Christians behave is not

appreciably different from the way non-Christians live their lives

G.K. Chesterton once said: “Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it has been

found difficult and not tried.” Warren Wiersbe notes that “too many Christians are „betweeners,‟

living between Egypt and Canaan, saved but never satisfied; or they live between Good Friday

and Easter, believing in the Cross but not entering into the power and glory of the

Resurrection.”

Maybe that‘s because we‘re still living in bondage to sin.

One of the keys to communication is to know your audience. Let me just make sure I know who‘s

here today. Can I see the hands of everyone who is a sinner? That‘s good. I feel at home with you.

This is a church for sinners and we don‘t really have anything to offer you today unless you‘re a

sinner.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN CHAPTER FIVE AND CHAPTER SIX OF ROMANS

Paul says: ―So should we persist in sin that the gift of grace may be more abundant?‖

Paul gives a rhetorical question (Someone has said there were 74 rhetorical questions in

Romans.) A question generally asked for the effect it produces with no answer necessarily

expected. (Much like I do in class). So after studying Romans 5, what conclusion are we to

draw from the doctrine of the grace of God and the righteousness of Christ?

Page 2: Romans 6 outline complete

2 Romans Six Notes and Outline/Charles e Whisnant

Too many people are looking for justification, but few are looking for sanctification. Many

people see salvation as a past tense salvation, and few see salvation as a present tense

salvation.

What have we seen happen in the believer‘s life in chapter five.

DO WE LIVE BY GRACE OR ANTINOMIANISM OR LEGALISM? Libertines, Legalist,

Liberty

Now Paul is going to show that the doctrine of justification, salvation, redemption, ―born again‖ is going

to produce good results, what we call the doctrine of sanctification. Paul is going to address the

believer‘s holiness.

Chapter 6 – 7 – 8 Now that we have been taken out of sin‘s grasp and freed from its bondage,

what is the result. The answer is found in these three chapters.

Paul is going to link a holy life with true salvation.

God has a much better plan in making you spiritual and holy.

THE TEXT:

ROMANS 6:1 WHAT5101 SHALL WE SAY THEN? SHALL WE CONTINUE1961 IN

(the) SIN266? ARE WE?

Are we literally to tarry or to stay at and abide in sin? Is the idea? Acts 10:48; 21:4; 28:12; I

Corinthians 16:7-8 and Galatians 1:18. Are we to persist in, to continue in an activity or state

such as in a state of sin? Galatians 5:13; 1 Peter 2:16; 2 Peter 2:18-19; Jude 1:4

LET ME ASK: CAN THERE BE A DIVINE TRANSACTION THAT HAS NO IMPACT IN

THE BELIEVER‘S LIFE? A THEORETICAL QUESTION.

A more theological question to this verse and question is found in the interpreting the word

‗SIN’ ACCURATELY: WHAT DOES SIN MEAN?

o The first thing we must settle is regarding the word sin, is whether it refers (in context)

to sin as an abstraction, namely, to acts of sin committed by the believer or to the totally

depraved nature still in him?

ROMANS 6:1B THAT3748 GRACE5485 MAY ABOUND4121?

THAT2443 HINA

Means so that, for the purpose of.

GRACE 5485 CHARIS

God’s unmerited favor. Grace is God’s generous favor to undeserving sinners and needy

saints.

A Basic Definition—lexical: The Greek word for grace is charis. Its basic idea is simply ―non-meritorious or

unearned favor, an unearned gift, a favor or blessings bestowed as a gift, freely and never as merit for work

performed.‖

Page 3: Romans 6 outline complete

3 Romans Six Notes and Outline/Charles e Whisnant

Expanded Definition—theological: Grace is ―that which God does for mankind through His Son, which

mankind cannot earn, does not deserve, and will never merit‖1

MAY ABOUND 4121 PLEONAZO

Might increase. May continue. Well we are going to see again next week the answer in Romans 6:2

LET US LOOK AT THIS ARGUMENT OF PAUL: SHOULD SAINTS SIN OR HOW SHOULD

SAINTS LIVE IN VIEW OF ROMANS 6:1-14?

Charles e Whisnant, March 27, 2011 45.69

What is the greatest need in our pulpits today?

GOD FORBID3361. HOW SHALL WE, THAT ARE DEAD TO SIN, LIVE ANY LONGER

THEREIN?

The Greek transliteration of Romans 6:2 is:

NOT MAY IT BE WHO WE DIED TO THE SIN HOW STILL SHALL WE LIVE IN IT?

ANSWER: PAUL is going to SHOW how unreasonable the proposition of verse 1 really is, Paul

answers the question with another, ―How shall we that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?‖

HOW DID YOU BECOME A CHRISTIAN AND WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE THE RESULT

WILL BE IN YOUR LIFE?

GOD FORBID1096

May it never be. Luke 20:16, Romans 7:7; Romans 9:14, Romans 11:1, Galatians 2:17,

Galatians 3:21, Galatians 6:14

There were those who were trying to say, well if God’s grace is so good, than can we

continue to SIN, since God grace is so much greater than SIN?

So why is this point so important to reject?

You been saved -- not so that you could go on living the sinful life you were before you were

saved.

You were not given a license to sin, but you were liberated from sin.

You were saved in order that you could have a life that would fit your conversion.

You put God‘s work at odds with His Word. If what God gave you as a free gift does not

bring about the purpose for which the gift was given, then the gift has no value

HOW SHALL WE, THAT ARE DEAD

Colossians 3:3, I Peter 2:24 Colossians 2:20 3:3;

Why is it impossible to continue in the SIN? Because we have DIED to it. The KJV says

―Dead to Sin,‖ but it is ―died to sin.‖ It‘s not talking about a state, but a past act. It is not saying

you are presently dead to sin, he is saying you have died. If you died to it how you can remain in

it.

Page 4: Romans 6 outline complete

4 Romans Six Notes and Outline/Charles e Whisnant

Vine points out, the pronoun WE, and really the whole clause, which gives a description

characteristic of believers, at the Cross a death took place and the SIN was liberated. We have

been given a NEW NATURE.

DIED599 APOTHNESKO DEATH

Stresses the ending of what is "former" – to bring what (naturally) follows.

The point is we have already DIED TO SIN. You can‘t say ―Well, I am dying to sin.‖

Because that has already happened when Christ‘s died. A Christian is someone who has died

to sin.

Christ died in our place Romans 5:6-8. And therefore the wrath of God is lifted.

Death to sin is separation from the ruling power of sin in one‘s own life as in Romans 6:14

How is it possible for such as us, Christians, who have been separated once

for all from the sinful nature, any longer to live within its grips?

TO SIN

My sin brought Jesus to the grave and brought me there with him. Faith sees sin as

murderous. It killed Jesus, and it killed me. Therefore, becoming a Christian means death

to sin. The old self that loved sin died with Jesus.”

LIVE 2198

To live, experience God’s gift of life

I Corinthians 5:14-17, and I Peter 1:14, 1 Peter 4:1-3

ANY LONGER THEREIN?

The point again? Yes, we can lapse into sin but Paul is speaking of the ―atmosphere‖ in which

one lives. A Christian cannot live outside the atmosphere of the Christ

realm. Not any more than a fish can live outside the water.

The Power in us is not our own, but it is the Holy Spirit‘s power working in us to perform what God

wants us to do and be. I personally don‘t have power over sin, it is Christ in me working out His will for

my life.

It‘s only by understanding that as a Believer in Christ that we are DEAD to the condemning power of

sin and alive spiritually to God ―in Christ‖ can a sinner truly love or trust God. Only as the believer sees

what Christ has done for him can he find the motive to do what God requires of him. Once the believer

sees God‘s love for him ―in Christ‖ he no longer wants to ―live in sin.‖

You know if a person does not understand this idea that if he is a believer who is to identify himself with

Christ and His purpose to destroy sin in his life, and if, instead of grief and hatred of sin, he cherishes

the notion that he will and can continue in sin (actions) that grace may abound, the conclusion is

inevitable that this person knows nothing of Christ and has not been justified.

“It is psychologically impossible to trust Christ’s redeeming blood and to want

to continue in sin.”

Page 5: Romans 6 outline complete

5 Romans Six Notes and Outline/Charles e Whisnant

CAN I SAY THIS: The purpose of your salvation is not for the purpose of

you failing; but salvation will produce in you a sanctifying result.

In Romans 6:2,7 and 11, it stated that believers have died to sin: ‘we who died to sin” vs 2;

“he who has died is freed from sin” vs 7 and “you must consider yourselves dead to sin” v. 11. These expressions mean that believers, through their identification with Christ, are dead to the GUILT of sin..

They are viewed by God as if they themselves died in the death of Christ and suffered the full penalty of sin’s guilt. Sin can no longer make any legal claim on them; thus, they are dead to it----free from its condemnation.

What does PAUL mean by death to sin: Romans 6:3 next time

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST COMES TO MANKIND TO SET THEM FREE FROM SIN

Charles e Whisnant, April 3, 2011 Romans 6:-3-4 45.70

KNOW YE NOT, THAT SO MANY OF US AS WERE BAPTIZED UNTO JESUS CHRIST

WERE BAPTIZED INTO HIS DEATH.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST COMES TO MANKIND TO SET THEM FREE FROM SIN

In Romans 6, Paul sets out to demonstrate the effectiveness of grace to deal with sin. Grace features the

saving work of both Christ (Romans 6:1-7:6) and the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:1-30). The law, on the

other hand, is ineffective (Romans 7:7-25).

1A WE ARE BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST: (principle #1)

BUT WE WERE “BAPATIZO” IN TO CHRIST.

BAPTIZED907

My life was ―fused‖ with Jesus Christ.

I was ―baptized‖ immersed, submersed into Christ.

When you were saved you were immersed into Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 10:2 2And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

o Means come under authority of Moses, to participate in the Mosaic leadership.

o What God was doing for Moses so he was doing to them. Infused them into Him.

We were baptized, placed in to Jesus Christ, deeply into Christ

It is not talking about H2O

But a personal fellowship with Christ.

1 John 1:3: 3That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have

fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians: 6 17But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

o Alters its condition or its relationship to its previous environment.

Here in Romans 6:3 and 4 and Galatians 3:27-28, baptism is meant symbolic

Why? Well, water baptism cannot put a sinner into Jesus Christ. Only the Holy Spirit can do that.

Romans 8:9 and 1 Corinthians 12:13:

Water baptism is a public witness of the person‘s identification with Christ, while Spirit baptism

is the personal and private experience that identifies the person with Christ.

WHAT I WANT YOU TO KNOW IS THIS:

Page 7: Romans 6 outline complete

7 Romans Six Notes and Outline/Charles e Whisnant

We are spiritually introduced or placed into a new environment, union with Christ, an

unbreakable joining together with Christ, an unbreakable union which forever alters the

individual‘s relationship to their previous environment.

2A PRINCIPLE #2 HAVE BEEN BAPTIZED INTO HIS DEATH

WERE BAPTIZED INTO JESUS CHRIST INTO HIS DEATH

Aorist tense = past completed, fully accomplished, historical act.

Picture‘s the believer‘s identification with Christ‘s death, here also means in relationship with

the power of sin. Romans 6:10

It‘s the GALATIANS 2:20 VIEW

THEREFORE

In light of the truth that we ―have been baptized into His (Christ Jesus) death‖ There has been a

burial.

WE ARE BURIED4916 WITH HIM IN BAPTISM Vs. 4a

Now we are BURIED in His death and raised in His RESURRECTION, in order that we might be

raised in to new life.

Colossians 2:12-13, 1 Peter 3:21

BURIED WITH CHRIST

Together with. Our burial with Christ signifies the believer‘s participation in His death by

virtue of our unbreakable coming together with Him.

THAT LIKE AS CHRIST WAS RAISED UP FROM THE DEAD

Or IN ORDER THAT 2443

In order that, the purpose of, as in this case the believer‘s spiritual baptism into Christ‘s death,

the ultimate purpose being that we might experience ―newness of life.‖

AS5618

Even as, just as, exactly like….

WAS RAISED1453

That is, there was an awakening from sleep. Figuratively it meant to cause to return to life.

Ephesians 2:5-6.

THE DEAD3498

So the purpose of you dying to SIN is so you could LIVE unto GOD.

BY THE GLORY OF THE FATHER

Which Christ was raised not only by God‘s power, but by the glory of the Father.

1 Corinthians 6:14, 2 Corinthians 8:4.

The sanctification of believers to the power of the glory of God

EVEN SO WE ALSO COULD WALK 4043 (PERIPATEO)

Figuratively refers to one‘s manner of life, to one‘s habitual way or bent of life or to one‘s life-

style. o To regulate one‘s life, to conduct one‘s self,

So with the purpose of the co-resurrection with Christ.

LIFE 2198 ZOE

That fullness of life, a blessed life, a life that satisfies and can be

lived as God had it in mind.

LIFE: His life is now in us as BELIEVERS, as a motivating, energizing,

pulsating principle of existence that has the potential to transform

every believer’s life.

HOW TO LIVE NOT BEING CONTROLLED BY SIN

ROMANS 6:5

Charles e. Whisnant, April 10 2011 45.71

FOR IF1487 WE HAVE BEEN PLANTED TOGETHER4854 IN THE LIKENESS3667 OF HIS

DEATH2288,WE SHALL BE ALSO IN THE LIKENESS OF HIS RESURRECTION 386

Vs. 5 FOR IF:

In view of the fact that we have been justified by faith and if we have been separated from the

indwelling sinful nature and it‘s so complete or effective that the believer is not compelled to sin

anymore (we may sin but now it is a choice). The believer has in actuality been permanently

delivered from the power of sin. And secondly, God at the same time imparted the divine nature

(―newness of life‖) which gives the believer both the desire and the power to do God‘s will.

Paul is going to begin to explain how ―newness of life‖ comes about and how we become a new kind of

person in every aspect of our life. Whereas before, we had this Adamic nature, but now it has been

broken and we have a new relationship with Christ.

We have been planted together4858

Grown together.

Have become united with: Here speaking of intimate union + growing up or springing up together.

When we were fused together with Christ, there is a grafting process. Here we as a believer have been

grafted into the life of Christ. We share in the life of Christ, just as a limb grafted into a tree shares the

life of the tree.

The life of Christ is now our life. We are now ―united with‖ Christ, His resurrection life flows

into us and we continue to grow with Him into spiritual maturity. The process is called or known

as sanctification.

―Born within us‖ there is this sense of oneness with Christ. There is this close relationship with

Christ.

With4862

A preposition speaks of intimacy. Closeness. The two thieves on the Cross. The first thief

experienced intimate union with Christ (spiritually) while the other thief experienced only

proximity to Christ.

You take this coming together with, we are not only together with one another, but we are so mixed in

that nobody can tell the difference one from the other. We can‘t get apart from each other. Once they

are put together than cannot be taken apart again. Illustration making biscuits (Charity) You can have

all the ingredients laid out on wax paper, they are separated. But put them altogether, bake them, and

you cannot separate those ingredients out again.

Page 10: Romans 6 outline complete

10 Romans Six Notes and Outline/Charles e Whisnant

Once we have been united with Christ and planted into His death and have been fused into his

resurrection, and have been raised from the dead with Him into the newness of life, we cannot go back

and live as if we are still in ADAM.

Once John 15:5 we have been planted together into Christ, the branch has been grafted into the tree, we

are together.

You have this new life planted in us. Jesus Christ is our life, He is LORD.

So why do we still sin? Good question, why do we?

WHERE IS WHAT HAPPENS. Planted together: means to grow up together with and pictures the

believer in living, vital union, growing up with Christ. When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, God

places us into Christ on the Cross, to share His death, burial and resurrection.

HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO JESUS?

IN THIS LIKENESS 3667

To make like = complete, identification, assimilation, not simulation.

Meaning shape, resemblance. Two men may resemble one another even though they are in no

way related to one another.

OF HIS DEATH2288

The believer undergoes a death like His. It can only be like His because His death was the only

death that paid the full price of redemption and fully satisfied the Father‘s righteous demand.

We only become identified with Christ in His death. We can‘t be saved without becoming holy.

WE SHALL BE1510 ALSO IN THE LIKENESS OF HIS RESURRECTION:

WE SHALL 235

Or Certainly: In fact in addition to the likeness of his death, we are in likeness of His

resurrection.

(―in the likeness of‖) is not found in the original Greek text but is added by the translators who

felt this was the meaning implied by the context.

RESURRECTION 386

Means to stand: literally means ―to stand again‖ or ―to cause to stand again.‖ Here in this

context it means a spiritual resurrection.

When the believer is raised to newness of life, by virtue flowing from Christ, into Whom he is

engrafted. Colossians 3:1-3.

We have “received the reconciliation” that we may now walk, not away from God, as if released from a prison, but with

God, as His children in His Son. Because we are justified, we are to be holy, separated from sin, separated to God; not

as a mere indication that our faith is real, and that therefore we are legally safe, but because we were justified for this

very purpose, that we might be holy. ...The grapes upon a vine are not merely a living token that the tree is a vine and

is alive; they are the product for which the vine exists. It is a thing not to be thought of that the sinner should accept

justification-and live to himself. It is a moral contradiction of the very deepest kind, and cannot be entertained without

betraying an initial error in the man’s whole spiritual creed.

UNCHAINED FROM THE POWER OF SIN LET US LIVE UNTO RIGHTEOUSNESS

Romans 6:6-7 45.72

Charles e. Whisnant April 17 2011

“KNOWING(1097) THIS, THAT OUR OLD(3820) MAN(444) IS CRUCIFIED(4957) WITH HIM, THAT THE

BODY(4983), MIGHT BE DESTROYED(2673), THAT HENCEFORTH(3371) WE SHOULD NOT SERVE(1398) SIN(266).”

Romans 6:6 “FOR HE THAT IS DEAD IS FREED(144) FROM SIN.” Romans 6:7

KNOWING THIS(1097) GINOSKO

Means to acquire information by whatever means, but often implies personal involvement or

experience. Ezekiel 11:19

OLD(3820) palaois

Means in this sense or conveys the sense of being obsolete, antiquated or outworn. Matthew 9:16;

Mark 2:21; Luke 5:36 (same idea in all three verses)

MAN(444) ANTHROPOS SELF

Paul is describing here the unsaved person who was dominated by the totally depraved nature that he

received from Adam, and who is ―under sin,‖ and is not ―righteous‖, and therefore ―helpless‖ to save

himself. He is therefore a sinner and thus an ―enemy‖ of God.

We are to ―lay aside‖ that crucified, dead, and corrupt old self (Ephesians 4:22-24), and ―put on the

new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth‖.

Colossians 3:9-10

Christians sin because of the remnants of sinful flesh, not because they have the same old active

sinful nature. Certainly we sin, but when we sin it is contrary to our nature, not because we have two

dispositions—one sinful and one not.

CRUCIFIED WITH(4957)

The believer has entered into an intimate, spiritual union with Christ, identification with Christ.

Galatians 5:25

IN ORDER THAT (2443)

So what is the purpose and effect of this co-crucifixion of our ―old self‖ with Christ?

THE BODY(4983) OF SIN(266)

Our body, with all its arms, legs, feet, eyes, etc. We are all born as a sinner, and as a result we are ruled

by SIN.

SIN (hamartia)

Romans 5:12

A principle or force personified as a moral evil character.\

THE BODY OF SIN

Our body, physical body, is the vehicle in which SIN expresses itself and causes our body to ―miss the

mark‖ of God‘s standard: James 2:10

John Murray said: ―the body as conditioned and controlled by sin.‖

THE SIN: speaking as an organized power, acting on our mind, thoughts, ideas, etc.

We are to understand ―might‖ does not mean ―maybe‖. As if there would be a possibility of doubt as if

the body of sin might not be destroyed. Hebrews 2:14

The idea is not ―to annihilate‖ to destroy utterly and completely and therefore cause to cease to

exist. But the idea is that of depriving SIN power to be used for which it was intended to be used.

The point Paul is making is not that Christians don‘t sin, but instead, the domination, and rule of sin

have been defeated for them.

THAT HENCEFORTH WE SHOULD NOT SERVE(1398) SIN

NO LONGER SLAVES! 2 Peter 2:19

NOT SERVE(1398) (DOULEUO) SIN

A slave does what the master (SIN) tells him to do. Believers in Christ are no longer slaves of SIN

Sin is suicidal action of the human will.

FOR

Paul is going to give an explanation of how believers have been freed from their former dictator

SIN>

HE THAT IS DEAD(599)

Has died. Paul is saying the believer who is justified by faith in Jesus Christ has actually ―died off‖

to the power of Sin and is no longer in bondage to this cruel taskmaster.

We could translate it ―We died once for all.‖

IS FREED(1344) FROM SIN

1. to declare, pronounce one to be just, righteous, or such as he ought to be.

THE DEATH AND LIFE OF CHRIST How God Turned Lemons into Lemonade

A PURE AND LASTING WORK OF SPIRITUAL REGENERATION

Charles e Whisnant May 01, 2011 45.73

ROMANS 6:8 TO 10

1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

2God forbid. How shall we, that

are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ

were baptized into his death? 4Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was

raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5For if we

have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

6Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth

we should not serve sin. 7For he that is dead is freed from sin.

8Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe

that we shall also live with him: 9Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death

hath no more dominion over him. 10

For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he

liveth unto God.

NOW IF YOU HAVE DIED WITH CHRIST:

Colossians 3:1-4; 1 Peter 4:1-3 Died to sin Romans 6:2; self 2 Corinthians 5:14-15; the law Romans

7:4, 6; Galatians 2:19; the world Galatians 6:14

What happens when you died?

To die means to be separated or to be free of something. What would the Colossians be free of in

context of the present discussion? The Law. Believers "are not under law, but under grace."

So what is his point?

Paul's reasoning is that because of these great liberating truths, a believer does not have to live like a

spiritually dead man but can now live as one alive in Christ, empowered with His resurrection power),

energized by the indwelling Holy Spirit as in Ephesians 3:16 and 5:18.).

Dying with Christ means not only identification with Him but dying to (from) something =

In Galatians 6:14 , although the verb is different (crucified instead of died) the truth is similar, Paul

reiterating that believers are also dead to the world for through...the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ...

the world has been crucified to [us], and [we] to the world..

Here crucified the perfect tense indicates a past completed action at a specific point in time with

continuing effect, and pictures the lasting effect of our death to the world. Why do so many believers

continue to make friends with the world? James 4:4

WE BELIEVE:4100

Page 14: Romans 6 outline complete

14 Romans 5 complete Outline Charles e. Whisnant, Pastor/Teacher, Rivers of Joy Baptist Church, Minford Ohio

WHAT DO WE BELIEVE? I BELIEVE IS THE KEY TO SAVING FAITH.

We believe we have been justified.

We believe we have died to the sin with Hm.

We believe we have been baptized into His death.

We believe we have been raised to walk in the newness of His life in us.

We believe this very moment, every day.

We believe each morning we get up that Christ lives in me, which in reality keeps my life from sin

day by day.

We believe with conviction that as I see the reality of a changed life, that I have died to the power of sin in my life.

THAT WE SHALL ALSO LIVE (4800) SUZAO WITH HIM

Here is exactly what Paul is trying to relate to us. Christ has put His DNA in us. (Bob Temple

last Sunday)

We shall also live with Christ: Christ lives in us in the Person of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of

Christ. His life is in us His DNA as it were.

We believe his and are persuaded by it to the point that we are enabled and willing to alter our

lifestyle (empowered even in this act by His grace. Christ gives us the ―want to.)

John MacArthur writes that o The assurance that we shall also live with Him obviously applies to the believer’s ultimate and

eternal presence with Christ in heaven. But the context, which focuses on holy living, strongly

suggests that Paul is here speaking primarily about our living with Him in righteousness in this

present life. In Greek, as in English, future tenses often carry the idea of certainty

We shall also live with Him: again the idea is that we live by means of Hm. Sin‘s dominion over

us has been shattered. We now share Christ‘s resurrection life here and now. And we of course

shall share it for all eternity, praise the Lord. I believe Paul is speaking of the sours of our

spiritual life from Christ Here Paul is saying that we as believers will be sustained in spiritual

life for time now and for eternity since Christ is our life.

o We see this clearly in Philippians 1:21 and in Galatians 2:20

Romans 6:9 KNOWING1492 THAT CHRIST BEING RAISED1453 FROM THE DEAD3498

Romans 6:10 FOR IN THAT HE DIED, HE DIED UNTO SIN ONCE: BUT IN THAT HE

LIVETH, HE LIVETH UNTO GOD vs 10

To see with perception, clear, and purely mental perception. We live in a daily sense of no fear of dying because we

know that Christ has conquered death. Death then can have no longer be a master over us.

There is a complete and permanent and absolutely change. Everyone has a master: either it is SIN or JESUS

CHRIST.

WE SHALL LIVE "WITH HIM" UNION WITH CHRIST

Does This Mean Personal and Mutually Together As One Body In Christ?

Romans 6:8 Charles e Whisnant May 15, 2011 45.74

NOW IF

Since or in view of the fact that (we have died with Christ)

WE BE DEAD (599) WITH (4862) CHRIST

We have died, there has been a separation, departure from the former association of SIN

With Christ: speaks of an intimate, irreversible union with.

WE BELIEVE:4100

THAT WE SHALL ALSO LIVE (4800) SUZAO (SUZESOMEN) WITH HIM

Live with (4800) (suzao from sun/syn

= together or with + záo = live) means to live with. The preposition

"sun" means with in the sense of "in union with" and thus is used to denote a more intimate

relationship of Jesus Christ with us than the corresponding preposition "meta" which also means with.

To illustrate, the criminals punished with Jesus were both crucified with (meta) Him or in His

company. One of these thieves was not crucified together with (sún) Him, bound up and in union with

Him, while the other thief was in fact crucified in union with Him. (Luke 23:43-44)

I want to go back and address this matter here in verse 8 “WITH CHRIST”.

UNION WITH CHRIST and THE CHURCH

We will live with Him. He is the essence of everything that we are. Think about that for a second.

The Holy life of God has somehow been intertwined into my life. He lives in me! That‘s the whole

idea that Paul is trying to get across. When you start talking about turning away from sin and living

holy, you've got to remember the holy, divine presence of God lives in you.

Zao is the essence of life so the verb combination suzao speaks of an intimate connection and conveys

the picture that we have been entwined with the essence of Christ's (resurrected) life! We are identified

with Him and because of His resurrection we share in and can experience the resurrection life of Jesus

(walk in newness of life).

Christ lives in us in the Person of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ. His life is in us. We can now

walk in a completely new way of life. We believe this and are persuaded by it to the point that we are

enabled and willing to alter our lifestyle (empowered even in this act by His grace - He gives us the

"want to").

The ways our individual “with Him” (union) with Christ influences how we view our corporate

life together: The act of joining together Christ and the believer to form a whole.

Page 16: Romans 6 outline complete

Mystical union is the union of believers with Christ the head, and with one another; with Christ the head by

faith, and with one another by love. … This union of believers in the same body is often compared with the

mystery of the Trinity; and it is elsewhere expressed by one body.

1B Union with Christ means addition of somebody into His Body (the Church). 1 Corinthians

10:17, 1 Corinthians 12:12-13, Colossians 3:3, 11-15

2B Union with Christ is the foundation of our corporate solidarity and mutual ministry together.

Romans 12:3-5

3B Union with Christ and the Body of Christ in the local church is seen in the Lord’s Supper.

Matthew 16:26-27 and John 6:41-56. I Corinthians 10:16-17

4B Spiritual baptism is a symbol of our union with Christ and with all who are in Christ: Galatians

3:26-28 and I Corinthians 12:12-13

5B Union with Christ is the context of our corporate maturity and growth. Ephesians 4:11-16,

Colossians 3:12-17

6B Union with Christ is the basis of our mutual dependence. I Corinthians 12:12-31

7B Union with Christ is the basis for sexual purity: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

8B Union with Christ is the basis for church membership: I Corinthians 5:1-5

―Paul describes the church as the body of Christ because of its union with Christ.‖ It all makes sense.

Our personal union with Christ is the basis for our life together.

The bottom line for me is this:

In our union with Christ we discover the groundwork for our corporate life and

solidarity.

In union with Christ we find the source and purpose for our spiritual gifts,

We become less inclined to favoritism and racial division,

We find the basis of our unity with other Christians in our church, our cities, and around

the globe.

Ultimately, the life and vitality of the church is directly connected to the life of the

Savior.

The idea of Romans 6 also is to keep our focus on Christ Himself, on His person, rather than thinking about the benefits

we receive from Christ. We are to keep Christ central. We are not to allow Him to fade into the background as a mere

facilitator of these benefits.

THE GOAL OF OUR SALVATION THROUGH GRACE

ROMANS 6:11-14 Charles e Whisnant, Pastor/Teacher May 22, 29 2011 45.75-76

Romans 6: The Beginning of the Romans Road to Sanctification: 6:1 -8:39

o KNOW THE FACTS: ROMANS 6:1-10

o CONSIDER OR RECKON the FACTS as TRUE 6:11

o YIELD or OFFER YOUR BODY to THESE TRUTHS: 6:12-14

The key to Christian living is to know the facts, consider the facts as true and yield your life to these

truths.

HERE IS THE BASIC PRINCIPLE IN THE WORD OF GOD: FIRST, KNOW WHAT IS TRUE BEFORE

YOU CAN OBEY GOD.

What I am about to teach you, and have been teaching you in chapter six, you must know and fully

understand what Paul is teaching us or what I am about to say in verse 11 will make no sense at all.

The truth that Paul is laying out here in this chapter that you are spiritually dead to sin, and the reality

that you are spiritually alive to Christ are not abstract concepts for your finite minds to attempt to

verify. They are divinely-revealed, foundational axioms behind Christian living, apart from which you

can never hope to live the holy life your new LORD demands.

YOU NEED TO REALLY UNDERSTAND AND BELIEVE BY FAITH YOUR POSITION IN CHRIST

SO THAT YOU CAN THEN LIVE AS YOU SHOULD.

"Likewise reckon (consider) 3049

logizomai from logos = reason, word, account0 means to reckon, compute, calculate, to take into

account, to deliberate, and to weigh.

Refers to a process of careful study or reasoning which results in the arriving at a conclusion.

In Paul’s day: Meant to impute (put to one’s account) or credit to one’s account.

The word related to our English term logic (which deals with the methods of valid thinking,

reveals how to draw proper conclusions from premises and is a prerequisite of all thought.

Make a mental calculation. And let us consider ourselves as actually dead to sin. In the same way, you

must see yourself as being dead to sin.

Paul is telling us to reflect on our position in Christ and to place two things into our spiritual bank

account: 1. We are ―dead to sin.‖ 2. We are ―alive to God in Christ Jesus.‖

Here is the necessary action you must take when you are hearing the Words of Paul in Romans 6: You

must take time to consider the facts and make this a habitual exercise, not just giving an occasional

casual thought to.

Page 18: Romans 6 outline complete

18 Romans 5 complete Outline Charles e. Whisnant, Pastor/Teacher, Rivers of Joy Baptist Church, Minford Ohio

ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ

our Lord."—Romans 6:11.

I. What it is to be dead unto sin in the sense of the text?

Being dead to sin must obviously be the opposite of being dead in sin. The latter must undeniably be a

state of entire sinfulness—a state in which the soul is dead to all good through the power of sin over it.

But right over against this, to be dead to sin, must be to be indifferent to its attractions—beyond the

reach of its influence—as fully removed from its influences as the dead are from the objects of sense in

this world.

II. What is it to be alive unto God?

o To be full of life for Him—to be altogether active and on the alert to do His will; to make our whole

lives a perpetual offering to Him, constantly delivering up ourselves to Him and His service that we

may glorify His name and PROMOTE His interests.

III. What is it to reckon (consider) 3049 ourselves dead indeed unto Him?

The word rendered reckon is sometimes rendered account. Abraham's faith was accounted unto him

for righteousness.

So, in this passage, reckon must mean believe, esteem yourselves dead indeed unto sin. Account this

to be the case.

Regard this as truly your relation to sin; you are entirely dead to it; it shall have no more dominion

over you.

And this gives us the true idea of Gospel faith—embracing personally the salvation which is by faith in

Jesus Christ.

We are saved by faith alone but faith is never alone.

IV. What is meant by reckoning yourselves alive indeed unto God through Jesus Christ?

Plainly this: that you are to expect to be saved by Jesus Christ and to calculate on this salvation as your

own. You are to esteem yourself as wholly dead to sin and as consequently brought into life and peace

in Christ Jesus.

V. What is implied in the exhortation of our text?

That there is an adequate provision for this expectation, and for realizing these blessings in fact.

For if there were no ground for understanding this, the command would be most absurd.

A precept requiring us to account ourselves dead indeed unto sin and alive unto God, would be

utterably untenable if there were no probability of the thing—

TAKE OFF YOUR GRAVE CLOTHES; YOU ARE ALIVE NOW

Romans 6:11-14 Charles e Whisnant, 45.77 June 05 2011

Remember when Christ raised up Lazarus from the dead and out of the grave? He still had his grave

clothes on, and Jesus said, ―loose him, and let him go.‖ Like Lazarus, we need to get rid of the grave

clothes.

HOW DO WE TAKE OFF THE GRAVE CLOTHES?

1 Peter 2:1 ―Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil

speaking,”

HOW DO WE OVERCOME SIN?

The secret of victory over the flesh is found in our obeying these three instructions:

11Likewise(3779) reckon(3049) ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto

God through Jesus Christ our Lord..

1A KNOW the Facts 6:3, 9 The Truth upon which we can build our Christian life is God‘s Word.

1B The believer is one with Christ

2B Isaiah 1:2-3; Philippians 4:8-9; Colossians 3:8

2A RECKON: 6:11 Consider the Facts as True

1B ―To affirm it so.‖ ―To count it to be true.‖ To continually count on the fact that God has

actually done what He said he would do. Keep on counting yourselves to be what God says you are.

Think about this in a detailed and logical manner, reason about it. Put together with your mind. Take

all of the truths of 6:1-10.

2B Four Reasons why it is difficult to understand this principle:

1C Maybe you have never been taught this.

2C Satan does not want you to believe this.

3C Remember this is not believed by experiential feelings.

4C There is still the conflict with sin.

3B What do you do when you affirm that you are dead to sin and alive to God?

1C We have confidence in temptation: 1 Corinthians 10:13

2C We have the confidence if we do sin we will still be saved.

3C We have confidence in death. There is life after death on this earth. John 11:25-

3A YIELD: or Offer your Body to these truths. Romans 6:12-14 I am to cease from my own living

2. Its field of battle is the body.

3. The body is mortal, and we shall be completely delivered from sin, when set free from our

present material frame, if indeed, grace reigns within.

4. Meanwhile we must not let it reign. 5. Notice this verse teaches that "the sin", here personified as an evil king, possesses evil lusts. When we

were unsaved and in Adam we

6. "all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind..."

(Ephesians 2:3) and

7. "we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and

pleasures..." (Titus 3:3) 8. but now that we "belong to Christ Jesus (we) have crucified the flesh Romans 6:6) with its

passions and desires " (Galatians 5:24) and because of this we are dead to sin's power.

9. Now as new creatures in Christ we are commanded to "put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no

provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts , " (Romans 13:14), 10. to continually "flee from youthful lusts , and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace" 2

Timothy 2:22),

11. and to continually live "as obedient children (by not being) conformed to the former lusts which

were (ours) in (our) ignorance" (1 Peter 1:14).

FLIP WILSON WAS WRONG: THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT

Romans 6:15-17a Charles e Whisnant, #78 June 19 2011

James 1:13-14 . It is not the temptation; it is that which is a part of us that responds to the temptation that we

have to contend with day by day. The word that James used there, "enticed," carries the same basic idea. The

word "enticed" is the word which means "to be caught by the use of a decoy." He says he is enticed by his

own lusts, not somebody else‘s.

Look at Romans 6 verse 15: "What then?" he says. "Shall we sin because we are not

under law but under grace?"

First of all, he reminds them of a universal truth. That whoever or whatever a person

chooses to serve becomes that person’s master.

"Shall we sin”264 hamartano

Webster's 1823 Dictionary has a "bibliocentric" definition of sin as...

The voluntary departure of a moral agent from a known rule of rectitude (righteousness) or duty, prescribed by

God; any voluntary transgression of the divine law, or violation of a divine command; a wicked act; iniquity.

Sin is either a positive act in which a known divine law is violated, or it is the voluntary neglect to obey a

positive divine command, or a rule of duty clearly implied in such command. Sin comprehends not actions

only, but neglect of known duty, all evil thoughts, purposes, words and desires, whatever is contrary to God‘s

commands or law.

BECAUSE WE ARE NOT UNDER5259 THE LAW351, but under grace? God forbid.

Means not simply to be beneath but to be totally under the power, authority and control of

something or someone.

"DO YOU NOT KNOW?1492?" Romans 6:16

The word for know is agnoeo: a (without) and gnoeo (understanding). "Do you not know? Has it not

dawned on you? Has it not come to your normal mind that when you were baptized into Christ you

were also baptized into His death?" It‘s in the present tense, so he‘s saying, "You need to understand

this."

THAT TO WHOM YE YIELD:” paristemi from para = near, beside, histemi = place, set

You place yourself alongside the proximity of that which causes your downfall when it looks at

unrighteousness. He says, "Don‘t you know? Don‘t you remember how it used to be?"

Means to present oneself for service or to put at the service of.

“YOURSELVES AS SERVANTS”1401 doulos The word “servant” in this passage is literally

“slaves” (CBL 1989)

Page 22: Romans 6 outline complete

22 Romans 5 complete Outline Charles e. Whisnant, Pastor/Teacher, Rivers of Joy Baptist Church, Minford Ohio

Means to bind. The word describes one who is in oppression or bound to another, in the state of being

completely controlled by someone or something and a slave in the sense of being the property of the

owner.

“TO OBEY” 5218 HUPAKOE

The point here is one of ―compliance‖ i.e. conformity to another. There is the submission to a

command of another.

This principle was true before we were saved, and some people try to relegate it as only a lost person. But I

want you to be very careful how you do this. When I study the text, I don‘t get that. He‘s referring to

something you ought to know. You‘ve got to understand that a Christian can also choose to be mastered by his

flesh. You‘ve got to understand that. We‘ve got a choice on both sides of the cross.

“YOU ARE SLAVES OF THE ONE WHOM YOU OBEY.” Romans 6:16

Paul takes that principle and begins to show you the consequence of making the wrong choice of who it is you want to rule your life or what it is you want to rule your life.

There was a sign in front of a church that read:, "You are free to make any choice that you want, but

you’re not free to choose its consequences." Good thought!

There are consequences to whatever you choose to yield yourself to. Whatever you put yourself in the

proximity of, that will control you and entice you, and it is going to have a consequence behind it.

“WHETHER OF SIN UNTO DEATH”2288 thanatos

SO PAUL IS SPEAKING TO THE BELIEVER IN THESE VERSES

"If you choose to let your flesh control you, if you make the conscious choice to do that, you‘re going

to have the result of a spiritual death, not eternal, but a realization of what the righteousness of God

could have been doing in your life, and you have just invoked the chastening hand of the Father."

Hebrews 12:6 says He chastens, He disciplines, and He scourges those whom He loves.

As a believer, I can never say, "The devil made me do it." Flip Wilson was wrong.

Whoever you foolishly choose (in marriage, in jobs, in life)—if it’s in a wrong way—if you

foolishly choose to serve the lust of your flesh, you have chosen to do it. You’ve chosen the

consequences, whatever they may be, and you are responsible for what you do.

Don‘t ever think you can cast blame on anybody other than yourself if you are a believer. You are

responsible for sin, responsible for the consequences.

OR OF OBEDIENCE UNTO RIGHTEOUSNESS” dikaiosune Romans 6:16

If you are obedient to the standard of Christ‘s teaching…. Sanctification occurs.

When you choose to obey, all of a sudden you can love that person who has never loved you and

treated you horribly because it‘s the love of God in you loving that person. The righteous character of

God is being produced by the Holy Spirit living in your heart.

BOB DYLAN HAD IT RIGHT: YOU GOT TO SERVE SOMEBODY

Romans 6:17 Charles e Whisnant #45.79TH June 29, 2011

BOB DYLAN SONG: But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

Yes indeed you're gonna have to serve somebody.

Well it may be the devil or it may be the Lord

but you're gonna have to serve somebody.

What does it mean to live "under grace" rather than "under law"? That question has been asked in many

ways over the centuries. The latter, "under law," refers to the self-achievement of righteousness. It is man

relying on himself to produce enough righteousness for his standing with God. "Under grace" is just the

opposite. It is reliance on the righteousness of Christ for one's standing with God. So to be "under grace" is to

be in Christ rather than in Adam; it is the old man crucified with Christ and the new man living unto God.

Idea: Romans 6:15-23

The reason Christians who are no longer under the law but under grace should not sin is because it leads to

slavery to sin and death, whereas slavery to righteousness leads to eternal life.

I. The Choices

II. V. 17-18 THE CHANGES

Romans 6:17 “But God be thanked, that you were slaves11401 of sin, but you have obeyed

from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.”

BUT

Paul now is going to change direction: He begins a contrast which expresses the absolute

incompatibility of living in sin on the part of the believer.

God be thanked: i.e. “grace to God”.

THAT YOU WERE THE SERVANT OF SIN

The idea that you committed over and over actions that were contrary to the will of God. The point is

before we were saved, we were in slavery to the idea of serving self. a slave, bondman, man of servile condition

It‘s the Ezekiel 36:26-27, 11:19; 18:31; Jeremiah 31:33-32, 39-40 idea.

I understand you could not live without a physical heart, and if there is something that is going to block

OF DOCTRINE1322

These people with their heart, mind and soul yielded themselves to the teaching of Christ, taught by the

WHICH WAS DELIVERED3860 YOU

More accurate to the Greek text would be the meaning:

That the readers had ―honestly responded to the impact of Christ‘s teaching when you came

under the influence of the Gospel.’

The word here “were committed”.

o The Roman Christians gave over to the teaching of Christ. They gave their hearts, minds

and souls to the words of Christ.

“that form of doctrine unto which ye were handed over (or delivered)

Summarily, this is the Gospel, --particularly, the work of Christ on the cross. Believers have been handed over by God

to the mighty facts, not only that their guilt was put away on the cross, but that they, as connected with Adam, died with

Christ; that their history in Adam is thus entirely ended before God; and that they now share the risen life of Christ, and

are before God as risen ones. And all believers are comprehended in these great truths, whether they apprehend them or

not! It is the first duty of every teacher of God's saints to open to them the glorious facts already true about them, and

unto which great mold or form of doctrine, they have been "delivered over" by God."

The Roman Christians not only heard what Jesus said, they responded to what He said.

Matthew 7:28; Titus 1:9; Hebrews 13:9 and 2 John 1:9

Conclusion

What kind of slave are you? Are you a slave of sin? Or are you a slave of righteousness? There's no in-

between, no land of compromise. Only in Christ do you become a slave of righteousness. And if a

slave of righteousness, then press on in obedience to Him who called you by His grace to live as those

"alive to God in Christ Jesus."

THE EXTREME SOUL MAKEOVER

Romans 6:18-20 #45.80 Charles e Whisnant July 10 2011

Romans 6:18 “Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.”

Psalms 116:16; Psalms 119:32, 45; Luke 1:74, 75; John 8:32, 36; I Corinthians 7:21 (slave), 22;

Galatians 5:1; 1 Peter 2:16

Paul has in the first three chapters given us a rather good picture of the nature of sin. He tells us what

sinfulness is. We seem not to be getting it today. We don‘t get it, we will never know God‘s forgiving grace.

Being justified, getting born again, one result of being saved is:

The power of sin has been broken, and no longer is a Christian under the bondage of sin‘s reign. We

are free indeed from SIN (power)

THE REAL DAMNATION OF SIN IS THIS: Sin will be in every human life, and will bring everyone into

eternal Hell if we are not set free.

As we have said 1 John 3:4 4Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the

transgression of the law. Or in the ESV 4Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices

lawlessness;(A) sin is lawlessness I John 5:17 and Romans 4:15

MacArthur gives this of SIN.

"Sin is a debt, a burden, a thief, a sickness, a leprosy, a plague, a poison, a serpent, a sting. Everything that man

hates, sin is. A load of curses and calamities beneath his crushing intolerable pressure, the whole creation groans.

1 Sin is REBELLION: It mocks God

2 Sin is INGRATITUDE: Romans 1. Are we thankful for all that God does today for us.

3 Sin is INCUREABLE: Jeremiah 13:25 Titus 1:15

4 Sin DISGUSTS God: Jeremiah 44:15-17

5 Sin is OVERPOWERING: Romans 1:21

6 Sin BRINGS SATANIC CONTROL Ephesians 2

7 Sin BRINGS DEPRESSION TO LIFE: Job 5:7

8 Sin DAMNS the SOUL TO HELL: Revelation 20

If you understand this about SIN you will know just how wonderful the freedom from sin is.

So we have been learning from Romans six we are free from SIN. Thank the Lord. (How about a good

shout to the Lord!)

We as Christians have as vs. 16 tells us, We are to be obedient unto righteousness.

Seeing the sinfulness of people, don‘t you believe salvation is really a divine miracle. Don‘t we hear

―what they need is redemption or a spiritual change?‖

Don‘t you believe as I do that GRACE is a divine miracle work in the soul that will cause us to obey.

Do not we hear ―If the character of that person is as such, they will do it again. It‘s in their nature to

repeat what they are prone to do.‖ (again this week.)

BUT THE CHRISTIAN HAS A CHANGED CHARACTER. IT‘S A FACT. A CHRISTIAN IS

CHARACTERIZED BY OBEDIENCE.

The imagery here is derived directly from the ancient practice of enslaving an enemy defeated in battle

as a prisoner. Galatians 4:3;

OF RIGHTEOUSNESS1343

Now that you have been freed from this SIN of bondage, you have been fully been made right with

God and you now can with freedom yield yourself to the standard of God.

I SPEAK AFTER THE MANNER OF MEN, vs. 19

I use the illustration of slavery, which I know, is not well liked in terms of illustration , but it‘s in the

language that is sufficient for the purpose we have at hand. When you talk about slavery in the human

terms it‘s not good. And I do apologize for using the analogy of slavery, but it is a human illustration

so your human minds can understand.

Note Jesus said in John 15:15: ―No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his

master is doing, But I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My father I have

made known to you.‖

BECAUSE OF THE INFIRMITY OF YOUR FLESH 4561 (sarx)

A.T. Roberston said, Because of defective spiritual insight largely due to moral defects

also.

Matthew Poole said: Paul said ―I accommodate myself to your capacity, because of the

weakness of your understanding in spiritual things.

FOR AS YOU HAVE YIELDED3936 YOUR MEMBERS SERVANTS

Just as you presented your members as slaves before you were saved, this is the way he lived. Before you were saved, you would use your mind, body, hands, thinking to do those things that would

please you.‖You wanted it, and you wanted it now.‖

In general the truth was you had unclean thoughts, your words were unclean, your deeds were unclean.

And you were just bad.

How could someone do that to a child? How could someone kill their girlfriend?

HOLINESS

Charles Hodge,

o We know…that holiness is the end of redemption.

o Christ gave himself for his church, that he might sanctify and cleanse it, and that it should be

holy and without blemish. He died the just for the unjust, that he might bring us unto God.

FOR WHEN YOU WERE THE SERVANTS OF SIN, YOU WERE FREE FROM

RIGHTEOUSNESS vs 20

When you were the servant of sin. Notice, you were controlled by SIN. You couldn‘t help but love the

things you saw. The allurements were so strong to your mind that you just had to do them. The power

over you was so strong that you just did it. Can I say, righteousness just does not look attractive or rewarding. It‘s the hardest thing to get people to see the beauty of the worship of Jesus Christ If you will work as hard as a Christian as you did as a lost person, you will have a great

Christian life.

If you put as much energy and drive into your Christian life as you did in your Secular life with Christ,

you will do just great.

A person after hearing the Word of God and has by the Spirit of God been brought to conviction about Sin and

his Need of a Savior, After hearing the GUILTY VERDICT of Your life, you have been given a NEW

SPIRIT, A NEW HEART, AND YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED FROM SIN‘S POWER AND NOW SERVE

UNTO RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HOLINESS.

Romans 6:21-23

21What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

22

But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the

end everlasting life. 23

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our

Lord.

WHAT FRUIT = BENEFIT.

Can I say there is pleasure in SIN for a season? All pleasure is really a matter of feeling. A person is no

less happy that he feels himself to be happy. If he imagines that he enjoys pleasure, he actually enjoys

pleasure. But as Paul asks: What advantage is there in such pleasure?

The whole point of God creating men in the first place was to have a group of redeemed

people who would live and serve God for ever.

o You earn ―death‖. Eternal life is God‘s gift.

We often use this verse as part of the Romans Road Salvation to win the Lost.

But note that this verse is written to Christians.

o The cause of Holiness is eternal life. And the possession of a Life that is filled with Jesus Christ in us.

John 17:3

o JESUS IS LORD

o Christ is our LORD

o DO I surrender my will to His will as I begin each day?

o None of us, of course I am sad to say, really ever ―arrive‖ in this place that Jesus is total Lord of our

life. But we grow into this position.
