INTRODUCTION:

―The Fruit of the Word‖. Why is the most Christian-educated generation in all of church history

so devoid of the fruit we should reasonably expect to find?”

George Barna has pointed out, in study after study, that the way Christians behave is not

appreciably different from the way non-Christians live their lives

G.K. Chesterton once said: “Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it has been

found difficult and not tried.” Warren Wiersbe notes that “too many Christians are „betweeners,‟

living between Egypt and Canaan, saved but never satisfied; or they live between Good Friday

and Easter, believing in the Cross but not entering into the power and glory of the

Resurrection.”

Maybe that‘s because we‘re still living in bondage to sin.

One of the keys to communication is to know your audience. Let me just make sure I know who‘s

here today. Can I see the hands of everyone who is a sinner? That‘s good. I feel at home with you.

This is a church for sinners and we don‘t really have anything to offer you today unless you‘re a

sinner.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN CHAPTER FIVE AND CHAPTER SIX OF ROMANS

Paul says: ―So should we persist in sin that the gift of grace may be more abundant?‖

Paul gives a rhetorical question (Someone has said there were 74 rhetorical questions in

Romans.) A question generally asked for the effect it produces with no answer necessarily

expected. (Much like I do in class). So after studying Romans 5, what conclusion are we to

draw from the doctrine of the grace of God and the righteousness of Christ?


Too many people are looking for justification, but few are looking for sanctification. Many

people see salvation as a past tense salvation, and few see salvation as a present tense

salvation.

What have we seen happen in the believer‘s life in chapter five.

DO WE LIVE BY GRACE OR ANTINOMIANISM OR LEGALISM? Libertines, Legalist,

Liberty

Now Paul is going to show that the doctrine of justification, salvation, redemption, ―born again‖ is going

to produce good results, what we call the doctrine of sanctification. Paul is going to address the

believer‘s holiness.

Chapter 6 – 7 – 8 Now that we have been taken out of sin‘s grasp and freed from its bondage,

what is the result. The answer is found in these three chapters.

Paul is going to link a holy life with true salvation.

God has a much better plan in making you spiritual and holy.

THE TEXT:

LET ME ASK: CAN THERE BE A DIVINE TRANSACTION THAT HAS NO IMPACT IN

THE BELIEVER‘S LIFE? A THEORETICAL QUESTION.

A more theological question to this verse and question is found in the interpreting the word

‗SIN’ ACCURATELY: WHAT DOES SIN MEAN?

o The first thing we must settle is regarding the word sin, is whether it refers (in context)

to sin as an abstraction, namely, to acts of sin committed by the believer or to the totally

depraved nature still in him?

The Greek transliteration of Romans 6:2 is:

ANSWER: PAUL is going to SHOW how unreasonable the proposition of verse 1 really is, Paul

answers the question with another, ―How shall we that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?‖

HOW DID YOU BECOME A CHRISTIAN AND WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE THE RESULT

WILL BE IN YOUR LIFE?

There were those who were trying to say, well if God’s grace is so good, than can we

continue to SIN, since God grace is so much greater than SIN?

So why is this point so important to reject?

You been saved -- not so that you could go on living the sinful life you were before you were

saved.

You were not given a license to sin, but you were liberated from sin.

You were saved in order that you could have a life that would fit your conversion.

You put God‘s work at odds with His Word. If what God gave you as a free gift does not

bring about the purpose for which the gift was given, then the gift has no value

HOW SHALL WE, THAT ARE DEAD

Colossians 3:3, I Peter 2:24 Colossians 2:20 3:3;

Why is it impossible to continue in the SIN? Because we have DIED to it. The KJV says

―Dead to Sin,‖ but it is ―died to sin.‖ It‘s not talking about a state, but a past act. It is not saying

you are presently dead to sin, he is saying you have died. If you died to it how you can remain in

it.


Vine points out, the pronoun WE, and really the whole clause, which gives a description

characteristic of believers, at the Cross a death took place and the SIN was liberated. We have

been given a NEW NATURE.

Stresses the ending of what is "former" – to bring what (naturally) follows.

The point is we have already DIED TO SIN. You can‘t say ―Well, I am dying to sin.‖

Because that has already happened when Christ‘s died. A Christian is someone who has died

to sin.

Christ died in our place Romans 5:6-8. And therefore the wrath of God is lifted.

Death to sin is separation from the ruling power of sin in one‘s own life as in Romans 6:14

How is it possible for such as us, Christians, who have been separated once

for all from the sinful nature, any longer to live within its grips?

My sin brought Jesus to the grave and brought me there with him. Faith sees sin as

murderous. It killed Jesus, and it killed me. Therefore, becoming a Christian means death

to sin. The old self that loved sin died with Jesus.”

ANY LONGER THEREIN?

The point again? Yes, we can lapse into sin but Paul is speaking of the ―atmosphere‖ in which

one lives. A Christian cannot live outside the atmosphere of the Christ

realm. Not any more than a fish can live outside the water.

The Power in us is not our own, but it is the Holy Spirit‘s power working in us to perform what God

wants us to do and be. I personally don‘t have power over sin, it is Christ in me working out His will for

my life.

It‘s only by understanding that as a Believer in Christ that we are DEAD to the condemning power of

sin and alive spiritually to God ―in Christ‖ can a sinner truly love or trust God. Only as the believer sees

what Christ has done for him can he find the motive to do what God requires of him. Once the believer

sees God‘s love for him ―in Christ‖ he no longer wants to ―live in sin.‖

You know if a person does not understand this idea that if he is a believer who is to identify himself with

Christ and His purpose to destroy sin in his life, and if, instead of grief and hatred of sin, he cherishes

the notion that he will and can continue in sin (actions) that grace may abound, the conclusion is

inevitable that this person knows nothing of Christ and has not been justified.

“It is psychologically impossible to trust Christ’s redeeming blood and to want

to continue in sin.”


CAN I SAY THIS: The purpose of your salvation is not for the purpose of

you failing; but salvation will produce in you a sanctifying result.

In Romans 6:2,7 and 11, it stated that believers have died to sin: ‘we who died to sin” vs 2;

“he who has died is freed from sin” vs 7 and “you must consider yourselves dead to sin” v. 11. These expressions mean that believers, through their identification with Christ, are dead to the GUILT of sin..

They are viewed by God as if they themselves died in the death of Christ and suffered the full penalty of sin’s guilt. Sin can no longer make any legal claim on them; thus, they are dead to it----free from its condemnation.

In Romans 6, Paul sets out to demonstrate the effectiveness of grace to deal with sin. Grace features the

saving work of both Christ (Romans 6:1-7:6) and the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:1-30). The law, on the

other hand, is ineffective (Romans 7:7-25).

fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

Here in Romans 6:3 and 4 and Galatians 3:27-28, baptism is meant symbolic

Why? Well, water baptism cannot put a sinner into Jesus Christ. Only the Holy Spirit can do that.

Romans 8:9 and 1 Corinthians 12:13:

Water baptism is a public witness of the person‘s identification with Christ, while Spirit baptism

is the personal and private experience that identifies the person with Christ.

WHAT I WANT YOU TO KNOW IS THIS:


We are spiritually introduced or placed into a new environment, union with Christ, an

unbreakable joining together with Christ, an unbreakable union which forever alters the

individual‘s relationship to their previous environment.

Vs. 5 FOR IF:

In view of the fact that we have been justified by faith and if we have been separated from the

indwelling sinful nature and it‘s so complete or effective that the believer is not compelled to sin

anymore (we may sin but now it is a choice). The believer has in actuality been permanently

delivered from the power of sin. And secondly, God at the same time imparted the divine nature

(―newness of life‖) which gives the believer both the desire and the power to do God‘s will.

Paul is going to begin to explain how ―newness of life‖ comes about and how we become a new kind of

person in every aspect of our life. Whereas before, we had this Adamic nature, but now it has been

broken and we have a new relationship with Christ.

We have been planted together4858

Grown together.

Have become united with: Here speaking of intimate union + growing up or springing up together.

When we were fused together with Christ, there is a grafting process. Here we as a believer have been

grafted into the life of Christ. We share in the life of Christ, just as a limb grafted into a tree shares the

life of the tree.

The life of Christ is now our life. We are now ―united with‖ Christ, His resurrection life flows

into us and we continue to grow with Him into spiritual maturity. The process is called or known

as sanctification.

―Born within us‖ there is this sense of oneness with Christ. There is this close relationship with

Christ.

A preposition speaks of intimacy. Closeness. The two thieves on the Cross. The first thief

experienced intimate union with Christ (spiritually) while the other thief experienced only

proximity to Christ.

You take this coming together with, we are not only together with one another, but we are so mixed in

that nobody can tell the difference one from the other. We can‘t get apart from each other. Once they

are put together than cannot be taken apart again. Illustration making biscuits (Charity) You can have

all the ingredients laid out on wax paper, they are separated. But put them altogether, bake them, and

you cannot separate those ingredients out again.


Once we have been united with Christ and planted into His death and have been fused into his

resurrection, and have been raised from the dead with Him into the newness of life, we cannot go back

and live as if we are still in ADAM.

Once John 15:5 we have been planted together into Christ, the branch has been grafted into the tree, we

are together.

You have this new life planted in us. Jesus Christ is our life, He is LORD.

So why do we still sin? Good question, why do we?

WHERE IS WHAT HAPPENS. Planted together: means to grow up together with and pictures the

believer in living, vital union, growing up with Christ. When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, God

places us into Christ on the Cross, to share His death, burial and resurrection.

HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO JESUS?

To make like = complete, identification, assimilation, not simulation.

Meaning shape, resemblance. Two men may resemble one another even though they are in no

way related to one another.

The believer undergoes a death like His. It can only be like His because His death was the only

We only become identified with Christ in His death. We can‘t be saved without becoming holy.

Means to stand: literally means ―to stand again‖ or ―to cause to stand again.‖ Here in this

context it means a spiritual resurrection.

When the believer is raised to newness of life, by virtue flowing from Christ, into Whom he is

engrafted. Colossians 3:1-3.

We have “received the reconciliation” that we may now walk, not away from God, as if released from a prison, but with

God, as His children in His Son. Because we are justified, we are to be holy, separated from sin, separated to God; not

as a mere indication that our faith is real, and that therefore we are legally safe, but because we were justified for this

very purpose, that we might be holy. ...The grapes upon a vine are not merely a living token that the tree is a vine and

is alive; they are the product for which the vine exists. It is a thing not to be thought of that the sinner should accept

justification-and live to himself. It is a moral contradiction of the very deepest kind, and cannot be entertained without

betraying an initial error in the man’s whole spiritual creed.

Paul is describing here the unsaved person who was dominated by the totally depraved nature that he

received from Adam, and who is ―under sin,‖ and is not ―righteous‖, and therefore ―helpless‖ to save

We are to ―lay aside‖ that crucified, dead, and corrupt old self (Ephesians 4:22-24), and ―put on the

new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth‖.

Christians sin because of the remnants of sinful flesh, not because they have the same old active

sinful nature. Certainly we sin, but when we sin it is contrary to our nature, not because we have two

dispositions—one sinful and one not.

Our body, with all its arms, legs, feet, eyes, etc. We are all born as a sinner, and as a result we are ruled

by SIN.

A principle or force personified as a moral evil character.\

THE BODY OF SIN

Our body, physical body, is the vehicle in which SIN expresses itself and causes our body to ―miss the

mark‖ of God‘s standard: James 2:10

John Murray said: ―the body as conditioned and controlled by sin.‖

THE SIN: speaking as an organized power, acting on our mind, thoughts, ideas, etc.

We are to understand ―might‖ does not mean ―maybe‖. As if there would be a possibility of doubt as if

the body of sin might not be destroyed. Hebrews 2:14

The idea is not ―to annihilate‖ to destroy utterly and completely and therefore cause to cease to

exist. But the idea is that of depriving SIN power to be used for which it was intended to be used.

The point Paul is making is not that Christians don‘t sin, but instead, the domination, and rule of sin

have been defeated for them.

What happens when you died?

To die means to be separated or to be free of something. What would the Colossians be free of in

context of the present discussion? The Law. Believers "are not under law, but under grace."

So what is his point?

Paul's reasoning is that because of these great liberating truths, a believer does not have to live like a

spiritually dead man but can now live as one alive in Christ, empowered with His resurrection power),

energized by the indwelling Holy Spirit as in Ephesians 3:16 and 5:18.).

In Galatians 6:14 , although the verb is different (crucified instead of died) the truth is similar, Paul

reiterating that believers are also dead to the world for through...the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ...

the world has been crucified to [us], and [we] to the world..

Here crucified the perfect tense indicates a past completed action at a specific point in time with

continuing effect, and pictures the lasting effect of our death to the world. Why do so many believers

continue to make friends with the world? James 4:4

WHAT DO WE BELIEVE? I BELIEVE IS THE KEY TO SAVING FAITH.

We believe we have been justified.

We believe we have died to the sin with Hm.

We believe we have been baptized into His death.

We believe we have been raised to walk in the newness of His life in us.

We believe this very moment, every day.

We believe each morning we get up that Christ lives in me, which in reality keeps my life from sin

day by day.

We believe with conviction that as I see the reality of a changed life, that I have died to the power of sin in my life.

I want to go back and address this matter here in verse 8 “WITH CHRIST”.

UNION WITH CHRIST and THE CHURCH

We will live with Him. He is the essence of everything that we are. Think about that for a second.

The Holy life of God has somehow been intertwined into my life. He lives in me! That‘s the whole

idea that Paul is trying to get across. When you start talking about turning away from sin and living

holy, you've got to remember the holy, divine presence of God lives in you.

Zao is the essence of life so the verb combination suzao speaks of an intimate connection and conveys

the picture that we have been entwined with the essence of Christ's (resurrected) life! We are identified

with Him and because of His resurrection we share in and can experience the resurrection life of Jesus

(walk in newness of life).

walk in a completely new way of life. We believe this and are persuaded by it to the point that we are

We find the basis of our unity with other Christians in our church, our cities, and around

the globe.

Ultimately, the life and vitality of the church is directly connected to the life of the

Savior.

The idea of Romans 6 also is to keep our focus on Christ Himself, on His person, rather than thinking about the benefits

we receive from Christ. We are to keep Christ central. We are not to allow Him to fade into the background as a mere

facilitator of these benefits.

What I am about to teach you, and have been teaching you in chapter six, you must know and fully

understand what Paul is teaching us or what I am about to say in verse 11 will make no sense at all.

The truth that Paul is laying out here in this chapter that you are spiritually dead to sin, and the reality

that you are spiritually alive to Christ are not abstract concepts for your finite minds to attempt to

verify. They are divinely-revealed, foundational axioms behind Christian living, apart from which you

can never hope to live the holy life your new LORD demands.

YOU NEED TO REALLY UNDERSTAND AND BELIEVE BY FAITH YOUR POSITION IN CHRIST

Refers to a process of careful study or reasoning which results in the arriving at a conclusion.

In Paul’s day: Meant to impute (put to one’s account) or credit to one’s account.

The word related to our English term logic (which deals with the methods of valid thinking,

reveals how to draw proper conclusions from premises and is a prerequisite of all thought.

Make a mental calculation. And let us consider ourselves as actually dead to sin. In the same way, you

must see yourself as being dead to sin.

Paul is telling us to reflect on our position in Christ and to place two things into our spiritual bank

account: 1. We are ―dead to sin.‖ 2. We are ―alive to God in Christ Jesus.‖

Here is the necessary action you must take when you are hearing the Words of Paul in Romans 6: You

must take time to consider the facts and make this a habitual exercise, not just giving an occasional

casual thought to.

I. What it is to be dead unto sin in the sense of the text?

Being dead to sin must obviously be the opposite of being dead in sin. The latter must undeniably be a

state of entire sinfulness—a state in which the soul is dead to all good through the power of sin over it.

But right over against this, to be dead to sin, must be to be indifferent to its attractions—beyond the

reach of its influence—as fully removed from its influences as the dead are from the objects of sense in

this world.

II. What is it to be alive unto God?

o To be full of life for Him—to be altogether active and on the alert to do His will; to make our whole

lives a perpetual offering to Him, constantly delivering up ourselves to Him and His service that we

may glorify His name and PROMOTE His interests.

III. What is it to reckon (consider) 3049 ourselves dead indeed unto Him?

The word rendered reckon is sometimes rendered account. Abraham's faith was accounted unto him

for righteousness.

So, in this passage, reckon must mean believe, esteem yourselves dead indeed unto sin. Account this

to be the case.

Regard this as truly your relation to sin; you are entirely dead to it; it shall have no more dominion

over you.

And this gives us the true idea of Gospel faith—embracing personally the salvation which is by faith in

Jesus Christ.

We are saved by faith alone but faith is never alone.

IV. What is meant by reckoning yourselves alive indeed unto God through Jesus Christ?

Plainly this: that you are to expect to be saved by Jesus Christ and to calculate on this salvation as your

own. You are to esteem yourself as wholly dead to sin and as consequently brought into life and peace

in Christ Jesus.

V. What is implied in the exhortation of our text?

That there is an adequate provision for this expectation, and for realizing these blessings in fact.

For if there were no ground for understanding this, the command would be most absurd.

A precept requiring us to account ourselves dead indeed unto sin and alive unto God, would be

utterably untenable if there were no probability of the thing—

James 1:13-14 . It is not the temptation; it is that which is a part of us that responds to the temptation that we

have to contend with day by day. The word that James used there, "enticed," carries the same basic idea. The

word "enticed" is the word which means "to be caught by the use of a decoy." He says he is enticed by his

own lusts, not somebody else‘s.

Look at Romans 6 verse 15: "What then?" he says. "Shall we sin because we are not

under law but under grace?"

First of all, he reminds them of a universal truth. That whoever or whatever a person

chooses to serve becomes that person’s master.

Webster's 1823 Dictionary has a "bibliocentric" definition of sin as...

The voluntary departure of a moral agent from a known rule of rectitude (righteousness) or duty, prescribed by

God; any voluntary transgression of the divine law, or violation of a divine command; a wicked act; iniquity.

Sin is either a positive act in which a known divine law is violated, or it is the voluntary neglect to obey a

positive divine command, or a rule of duty clearly implied in such command. Sin comprehends not actions

only, but neglect of known duty, all evil thoughts, purposes, words and desires, whatever is contrary to God‘s

commands or law.

BECAUSE WE ARE NOT UNDER5259 THE LAW351, but under grace? God forbid.

Means not simply to be beneath but to be totally under the power, authority and control of

something or someone.

The word for know is agnoeo: a (without) and gnoeo (understanding). "Do you not know? Has it not

dawned on you? Has it not come to your normal mind that when you were baptized into Christ you

were also baptized into His death?" It‘s in the present tense, so he‘s saying, "You need to understand

this."

Means to bind. The word describes one who is in oppression or bound to another, in the state of being

The point here is one of ―compliance‖ i.e. conformity to another. There is the submission to a

command of another.

This principle was true before we were saved, and some people try to relegate it as only a lost person. But I

want you to be very careful how you do this. When I study the text, I don‘t get that. He‘s referring to

something you ought to know. You‘ve got to understand that a Christian can also choose to be mastered by his

flesh. You‘ve got to understand that. We‘ve got a choice on both sides of the cross.

“YOU ARE SLAVES OF THE ONE WHOM YOU OBEY.” Romans 6:16

Paul takes that principle and begins to show you the consequence of making the wrong choice of who it is you want to rule your life or what it is you want to rule your life.

There was a sign in front of a church that read:, "You are free to make any choice that you want, but

you’re not free to choose its consequences." Good thought!

There are consequences to whatever you choose to yield yourself to. Whatever you put yourself in the

proximity of, that will control you and entice you, and it is going to have a consequence behind it.

“WHETHER OF SIN UNTO DEATH”2288 thanatos

SO PAUL IS SPEAKING TO THE BELIEVER IN THESE VERSES

"If you choose to let your flesh control you, if you make the conscious choice to do that, you‘re going

to have the result of a spiritual death, not eternal, but a realization of what the righteousness of God

could have been doing in your life, and you have just invoked the chastening hand of the Father."

Hebrews 12:6 says He chastens, He disciplines, and He scourges those whom He loves.

As a believer, I can never say, "The devil made me do it." Flip Wilson was wrong.

Whoever you foolishly choose (in marriage, in jobs, in life)—if it’s in a wrong way—if you

foolishly choose to serve the lust of your flesh, you have chosen to do it. You’ve chosen the

consequences, whatever they may be, and you are responsible for what you do.

Don‘t ever think you can cast blame on anybody other than yourself if you are a believer. You are

responsible for sin, responsible for the consequences.

When you choose to obey, all of a sudden you can love that person who has never loved you and

Well it may be the devil or it may be the Lord

What does it mean to live "under grace" rather than "under law"? That question has been asked in many

ways over the centuries. The latter, "under law," refers to the self-achievement of righteousness. It is man

relying on himself to produce enough righteousness for his standing with God. "Under grace" is just the

opposite. It is reliance on the righteousness of Christ for one's standing with God. So to be "under grace" is to

be in Christ rather than in Adam; it is the old man crucified with Christ and the new man living unto God.

Idea: Romans 6:15-23

The reason Christians who are no longer under the law but under grace should not sin is because it leads to

slavery to sin and death, whereas slavery to righteousness leads to eternal life.

Conclusion

What kind of slave are you? Are you a slave of sin? Or are you a slave of righteousness? There's no in-

between, no land of compromise. Only in Christ do you become a slave of righteousness. And if a

slave of righteousness, then press on in obedience to Him who called you by His grace to live as those

"alive to God in Christ Jesus."

If you understand this about SIN you will know just how wonderful the freedom from sin is.

So we have been learning from Romans six we are free from SIN. Thank the Lord. (How about a good

We as Christians have as vs. 16 tells us, We are to be obedient unto righteousness.

Seeing the sinfulness of people, don‘t you believe salvation is really a divine miracle. Don‘t we hear

WHAT FRUIT = BENEFIT.

Can I say there is pleasure in SIN for a season? All pleasure is really a matter of feeling. A person is no

less happy that he feels himself to be happy. If he imagines that he enjoys pleasure, he actually enjoys

pleasure. But as Paul asks: What advantage is there in such pleasure?
