Outline to Complete Grammar Notes

Directions: Fill in your grammar notes based on the Outline of the

Unit provided in this file. Do NOT delete anything in this

outline, just fill in your “notes” as you go and save the file

as you add material to it. Make sure you provide at least

something on each topic in each Part of each Section, and make

these “notes” work for YOU by providing enough information,

including examples, to thoroughly cover the grammar (and some

vocabulary/expressions as needed). I never expect everyone’s

notes to be the same, and you should focus on those things you

have the most problems with (that you need the most review on) but

you MUST include something for each item, so be creative with what

will help YOU the most on each item. Also keep in mind that if you

are doing very well on exams, then I don’t expect as much detail

in your notes, but if you are not doing very well on exams, I

expect more from you on this assignment since you clearly need the

review! You will be doing notes all year on every unit, so work

now to develop a system that helps you learn and review, and

don’t focus on just earning the assignment grade.

Remember that you will use these notes to review for the Unit 3

Exam, but you will also be able to use them for review for the

semester/end-of-year exams too. The notes will only help you if

you put the proper effort into creating them! Please see samples

of previous Grammar Notes (for style ideas) in the Resources Tab,

and in the previous unit materials.

This assignment is worth 40 points and is due by Wed Dec 18.

NOTE: This Outline only contains the “shell” of Section and

Parts in the Unit this time. It is up to you to identify all the

topics covered in each this time.

At the end of this unit, I should know: how to talk about sports

and other leisure activities, talk about what I like to do,

explain things I do well at, invite someone to join in

participating in an activity and learn to make a phone call.

Sports

Kendo and judo are traditional sports in Japan, and is taught in

the Japanese P.E. curriculum. In the United States, sports last

for a few months while in Japan, sports last an entire year. This

is the reason why Japanese usually stick to one to two sports,

while the Americans can participate in three to four sports.

Good or bad at something

To say if someone plays a sport well or is good at playing it, you

would use じょうず, a な-adjective.

田中さんは やきゅうが じょうずです。

上田さんは やきゅうが あまり じょうずじゃありません（じゃ

ないです。）

川上さんは やきゅうが ぜんぜん じょうずじゃありません（じ

To say is someone doesn’t play well or is bad at playing it, you

would use へた, a な-adjective.

The following expressions are used to ask someone if they would

like to do things:

To ask if someone would like to do things with you or someone else,

you would use the following expressions:

To express that you like something, you would say：

～が 好きです。

To express someone likes playing something, you would say:

～を （Verb）のが 好きです。

テニスを するのが 好きです。

You: 山本さんは 何を するのが 好きですか。

山本: やきゅうを するのが 好きです。

To express that someone is good at playing something, you would

say:

～さんは ～を（Verb）のが じょうずです。

山本さんは ピアノを ひくのが じょうずです。

The particle の is used to make a verb a noun.
