PREEXISTENCE, John 1:15 John testified about Him andcried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, He whocomes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existedbefore me. ATTONEMENT, John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus comingto him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes awaythe sin of the world! Matthew 3:4, Elijah Had A Diet Too 1 Kings 19:5 He lay down and slept under a junipertree; and behold, there was an angel touching him, andhe said to him, "Arise, eat." 6 Then he looked andbehold, there was at his head a bread cake baked onhot stones, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank andlay down again. 7 The angel of the LORD came again asecond time and touched him and said, "Arise, eat, because the journey is too great for you." 8 So he aroseand ate and drank, and went in the strength of thatfood forty days and forty nights to Horeb, themountain of God. 9 Then he came there to a cave andlodged there; and behold, the word of the LORD cameto him, and He said to him, "What are you doing here,Elijah?" 17. Matthew 3:4, John Had A Diet Locusts are clean Leviticus 11:22 These of them you may eat:the locust in its kinds, and the devastatinglocust in its kinds, and the cricket in its kinds, and the grasshopper in its kinds. 18. Matthew 3:4, Johns Diet, Locusts Eastons Bible Dictionary "The legs and thighs ofthese insects are so powerful that they can leap to aheight of two hundred times the length of their bodies. When so raised they spread their wings and fly so closetogether as to appear like one compact moving mass."Locusts are prepared as food in various ways.Sometimes they are pounded, and then mixed withflour and water, and baked into cakes; "sometimesboiled, roasted, or stewed in butter, and then eaten."They were eaten in a preserved state by the ancientAssyrians. The devastations they make in Eastern landsare often very appalling 19. Matthew 3:4, Johns Diet, Locusts The invasions of locusts are the heaviest calamitesthat can befall a country. "Their numbers exceedcomputation: the Hebrews called them the countless, and the Arabs knew them as the darkeners of the sun.Unable to guide their own flight, though capable ofcrossing large spaces, they are at the mercy of thewind, which bears them as blind instruments ofProvidence to the doomed region given over to themfor the time. Innumerable as the drops of water or thesands of the seashore, their flight obscures the sun andcasts a thick shadow on the earth Ex 10:15 Jud 6:57:12 Jer 46:23 Joe 2:10 20. Matthew 3:4, Johns Monasticism?, wikipedia This verse played an important role in thedevelopment of Christian monasticism with John theBaptist viewed as a model ascetic. The sparse food anduncomfortable clothing, including the wearingof hairshirts became seen as the ideal of Christianasceticism. John Calvin wholly rejected thisinterpretation. He did not see this verse presentingJohn the Baptist as an ideal, but rather presenting anaccurate portrait of one forced to live in thewilderness. To Calvin Johns holiness and popularity isnot because of his asceticism but despite of it. Todaymost Protestants follow Calvins view of this verse.[2] DLK sees him as a prophet of God, separate from the world and religion 21. Monasticism vs. Dangers Of Wealth One of the dangers of having a lot of money isthat you may be quite satisfied with the kinds ofhappiness money can give and so fail to realizeyour need for God. If everything seems to comesimply by signing checks, you may forget that youare at every moment totally dependent on God.C. S. Lewis Matthew 6:24 You cannot serve God andwealth. Matthew 13:22 the deceitfulness of wealthchoke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 22. Matthew 3:4, God Gave Jacob A Diet Deuteronomy 32:9 "For the LORDs portion is His people;Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance. 10 "He found him in adesert land, And in the howling waste of a wilderness; Heencircled him, He cared for him, He guarded him as the pupilof His eye. 11 "Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, That hoversover its young, He spread His wings and caught them, Hecarried them on His pinions. 12 "The LORD alone guided him,And there was no foreign god with him. 13 "He made him rideon the high places of the earth, And he ate the produce of thefield; And He made him suck honey from the rock, And oilfrom the flinty rock, 14 Curds of cows, and milk of the flock,With fat of lambs, And rams, the breed of Bashan, and goats,With the finest of the wheat-- And of the blood of grapes youdrank wine. 15 "But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked-- You aregrown fat, thick, and sleek-- Then he forsook God who madehim, And scorned the Rock of his salvation. 23. For many years it was traditional tointerpret locust as referring to not the insect, butrather the seed pods of the carob tree. Matthew 3:4, Johns Diet, wikipedia considered unclean under Mosaic law Leviticus11:22 specifically states that locusts are permitted.Albright and Mann believe the attempt to portray Johnthe Baptist as eating seed pods was concern for havingsuch a revered figure eating insects and also a beliefthat a true ascetic should becompletely vegetarian.[5] What is meant by honey isalso not undisputed. While bee honey was a commonfood in the area at the time, Jones believes that itrefers to the tree gum from that tamarisk tree, atasteless but nutritious liquid, rather than the honeymade from bees.[6].. 26. Matthew 3:6, Baptized By John Matthew 3:6and they were being baptized This is not Christian baptism. This baptism wouldidentify the one baptized with John the Baptist, and hismessage of repentance, (1 Corinthians 10:2 and allwere baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea).Dr. Ryrie in his notes says "as one of the conditions ofbecoming a proselyte to Judaism, the person had toimmerse himself in the water (also be circumcised if amale and offer a sacrifice). To be baptized by John wasa striking aligning of oneself with his message. Johnhad no organization to join; those being baptize werealready Jews; and the church was not yet in existence. So they were acknowledging the truth of his messageand siding with righteousness. 31. Mikveh(ritual immersion tank)at Qumran 32. Matthew 3:6, Baptized By John Matthew 3:6and they were being baptized This is not Christian baptism. The archaeological study Bible on page 1562says this sacramental ceremony wasenacted to symbolize purification and theremoval of sin or was sometimes used as aninitiation rite to consecrate a change of statusor a conversion." 33. Matthew 3:7-10, A Sent From God,Seeker Friendly Preacher Matthew 3:7 But when he saw many of thePharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, hesaid to them, "You brood of vipers, who warnedyou to flee from the wrath to come? 8 "Thereforebring forth fruit in keeping with repentance; 9and do not suppose that you can say toyourselves, We have Abraham for our father; forI say to you, that God is able from these stones toraise up children to Abraham. 10 "And the axe isalready laid at the root of the trees; every treetherefore that does not bear good fruit is cutdown and thrown into the fire. 34. Matthew 3:7-10, Whats All This WrathStuff? Zephaniah 1:14 Near is the great day of the LORD, Near andcoming very quickly; Listen, the day of the LORD! In it thewarrior cries out bitterly. 15 A day of wrath is that day, A dayof trouble and distress, A day of destruction and desolation,A day of darkness and gloom, A day of clouds and thickdarkness, 16 A day of trumpet and battle cry Against thefortified cities And the high corner towers. 17 I will bringdistress on men So that they will walk like the blind,Because they have sinned against the LORD; And theirblood will be poured out like dust And their flesh like dung.18 Neither their silver nor their gold Will be able to deliverthem On the day of the LORDS wrath; And all the earth willbe devoured In the fire of His jealousy, For He will make acomplete end, Indeed a terrifying one, Of all theinhabitants of the earth. 35. Matthew 3:7-10, Whats All This WrathStuff? Isaiah 59:18 According to their deeds, so He will repay,Wrath to His adversaries, recompense to His enemies; To the coastlands He will make recompense. 19 So theywill fear the name of the LORD from the west And Hisglory from the rising of the sun, For He will come like arushing stream Which the wind of the LORD drives. 20"A Redeemer will come to Zion, And to those who turnfrom transgression in Jacob," declares the LORD. Jeremiah 23:19 "Behold, the storm of the LORD hasgone forth in wrath, Even a whirling tempest; It willswirl down on the head of the wicked. 20 "The anger ofthe LORD will not turn back Until He has performedand carried out the purposes of His heart; In the lastdays you will clearly understand it. 36. Matthew 4:3, Stones Become Bread Matthew 4:3 And the tempter came and saidto Him, "If You are the Son of God, commandthat these stones become bread." 43. Matthew 4:12, Jesus Withdrew Into Galilee The Archaeological Study Bible says, The northernpart of Naphtali was inhabited by a mixed race of Jewsand pagans (Judges 1:33). Its Israelite population hadbeen carried away captive to Assyria and had beenreplaced by a colony of pagan immigrants (2 Kings15:29; 17:24). Hence the region was called "Galilee ofthe nations" and its people called "Gentiles" (Isa 9:1;Mat 4:, 15-16). During and after the captivity thepredominant mixture of Gentile races impoverishedthe worship of Judaism, and for the same reason theGalilean accent and dialect were noticeably peculiar(26:73). This caused the southern Jews of "purer"blood and orthodox tradition to despise the Galileans(John 1:46, 7:52). 44. Luke 10:15 "And you, Capernaum, will not be exaltedto heaven, will you? You will be brought down toHades! Millennial? 48. Matthew 4:16, Shadow Of Death Matthew 4:16 ""THE PEOPLE WHO WERESITTING IN DARKNESS SAW A GREAT LIGHT,AND THOSE WHO WERE SITTING IN THE LANDAND SHADOW OF DEATH, UPON THEM ALIGHT DAWNED."
