‘Like A Prayer’ Video analysis

This is significant clip in the video as it shows why this video is controversial. This shows that Jesus is black in the video and it goes against motifs of Jesus being white and this was very controversial in the 80’s.

This again adds to the controversy as the man being arrested is the same man as Jesus in the video. It is also the motif of racism as the black man is being arrested by the white policeman for something he didn’t do.

This clip shows the motif of violence as a group of men rape and kill a girl. This then leads on to the black man getting arrested as he finds the body and gets caught at the scene.

This scene shows ritual celebration. This is a motif because music videos usually show partying and dancing which this is, even though it is in a religious way.

This clip shows a scene in black and white which means the scene is a flashback. This is a motif because this happens in other videos just to show the audience that it is a flashback otherwise it would be hard to understand.

This clip is one of the reasons why the video is so controversial because she is kissing Jesus who is black and who was also the suspected criminal in the earlier part of the video.

This clip is also very controversial as when this happens it is said to show that you have been touched by God, therefore as Madonna at the time in the 80’s was very open about her sexuality and this clip said she has been touched by God which may of angered people.

This is fragmentation of the body. This is very common in music videos making it a motif. It can be of any part of the body but in this case it is black Jesus’ hand but there were other fragmentations of the body in the video to chose from.
