With the competition any artist faces in their quest for star dome, it’s important for them to stand out. Some artists go crazy to capture the audience’s attention, but Katy Perry remains more reserved and still has a strong following. She has the entertainment factor by being herself and exuding confidence. Unlike other artists who pull out all of the stops in the quest to gain more fans and to be more entertaining, they lose themselves in the process and do not stay true to themselves. Although it may not be too apparent on the outside, Katy has stuck to her Christian values. God has led her to produce music she loves and is entertaining to her fans. Growing up, Katy sang gospel music in her church and her parents pushed her strongly towards singing Christian music. After her first gospel single, that was not very successful and did not give her publicity, Katy turned around and changed her style of music completely. In 2008 she published her first hit single, “I Kissed a Girl.” From then on, Katy Perry was a hit. She goes through life with confidence which she exudes both on and off the stage. She isn’t afraid to put herself out there, but does not go as far as other artists such as Kesha or Lady Gaga. Artists like Lady Gaga, seem solely invested in themselves and their persona, whereas Katy focuses on helping others. She supports the communities around her and is not afraid to voice her opinion. Her emphasis on important issues gives those groups a voice. Her music has a light and fun feel to it and is not about sex, drugs, or partying. Her respectful actions and way of presenting herself tend to draw more people to follow her. She is very respectful to the audience she sings to. Although in some ways she has a reserved personality, she still stands out with her performances and actions off the stage. She supports individual’s rights, such as gay marriage, and stands for something bigger than herself. Being an individual has pushed Katy further than she thought and has caused her to reach more people in more ways. As she says in her latest song, “You’re gonna hear me roar,” shows her determination and strive to be influential in this world of preconceived notions and stereotypical opinions. Katy Perry
