Psalm 30; James 5:13-16

Psalm 30 A Psalm; a Song at the Dedication of the House.

A Psalm of David.

I will extol You, O LORD, for You have lifted me up, And have not let my enemies rejoice over me. O LORD my God, I cried to You for help, and You healed me. O LORD, You have brought up my soul from Sheol; You have kept me alive, that I would not go down to the pit. Sing praise to the LORD, you His godly ones, And give thanks to His holy name.

For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime; Weeping may last for the night, But a shout of joy comes in the morning. 6 Now as for me, I said in my prosperity, “I will never be moved.” O LORD, by Your favor You have made my mountain to stand strong; You hid Your face, I was dismayed. To You, O LORD, I called, And to the Lord I made supplication: “What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise You? Will it declare Your faithfulness? “Hear, O LORD, and be gracious to me;

O LORD, be my helper.” You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness, That my soul may sing praise to You and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to You forever.

James 5:13–16

Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises. Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.

Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.

Why praise?

1. Response to what God has done2. Corporate response of coming together3. Enter into His presence4. Makes us pleasing to God

Established by God Now as for me, I said in my

prosperity, “I will never be moved.” O LORD, by Your favor You have made my mountain to stand strong;

Psalm 30:6–7a

Seeing promotion as from GodGod’s faithfulnessFavor from God established his throne

Good and Bad

Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises.

James 5:13

Not all medicine tastes good

1. Our correction2. Builds compassion 3. Tests faith 4. Builds character 5. God’s power

…Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

Job 2:10

Our sin causes His anger

For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime; Weeping may last for the night,

The cure

…and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed.

Notice the link between forgiveness and healing

The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.

God’s desire is to answer

O LORD my God, I cried to You for help, and You healed me. O LORD, You have brought up my soul from Sheol; You have kept me alive, that I would not go down to the pit.

Psalm 30:2–3

Answered prayer causes praise

“Hear, O LORD, and be gracious to me; O LORD, be my helper.” You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness,

Psalm 30:10–11

Praise births praise

That my soul may sing praise to You and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to You forever.
