Three Conceptual Barriers

to Social Media Success

• isn’t real, therefore nothing generated with or from it-- is authentic

– “We aren’t a virtual church,”

• undermines church (the-building), therefore cannot be used to inspire attendance or participation;

– “Why would anyone come to church?”

• or should be considered a nonessential luxury because it takes too much time to learn and use.

– “Just a dream, we have to make do with what we have!”• Gould, Meredith (2013-07-09). The Social Media Gospel (Kindle Locations 240-241). The Liturgical Press. Kindle Edition

Stumbling Block

WHERE TO START?

"All this technology is

making us antisocial"

From This Point.

We Believe:

• Social media tools can be used to manage and monitor public perception of your congregation’s mission

• Social Media can enhance and create caring, Christian relationship.

We Intend Today:

• To lay a foundation of Discipleship through social media.

• To understand the “WHY” before we try to develop the “HOW”

• To identify our ‘next step’ of action.

.

Page 11: Festival of Congregations Oct 11, 2014

OUR GOAL

• To Develop a purposeful Social Media Ministry rooted in

discipleship.

• Today is not to learn the Nuts and Bolts, but to understand the

BLUEPRINTS—to see how the nuts and bolts work together.

Social Network As PRESENCE

• We use mediums/media (technology) to extend presence.

• For your Social Media to be an effective aid in your ministry, it must be authentic, and present.

CONNECTEDNESS is KEY

What model did we use to get here?

How can we use Technology

• To build God’s Kingdom on Earth?

• To make disciples of all nations?

• To build and strengthen relationships within the

church/community?

Page 25: Festival of Congregations Oct 11, 2014

Christ has no online presence but yours,No blog, no Facebook page but yours,

Yours are the tweets through which love touches this world, Yours are the posts through which the Gospel is shared, Yours are the updates through which hope is revealed. Christ has no online presence but yours,No blog, no Facebook page but yours.

• We start with a website as example.

Adapting to technology does not mean you change the message

to fit the culture. The Word of God stands and does not need to be

spiced up or watered down to fit the taste buds of any culture or

generation. The Word is alive and active as it was when God

spoke it into existence.

The only thing that must change is your mind-set about how you

must relate it to the culture around you.

• The underlying power in social media is not

the technology. It’s the power that comes

from human beings connecting from all

around the globe.

Page 38: Festival of Congregations Oct 11, 2014

• ‘Media that is social. Social Media is an ongoing conversation on the internet, with new conversations beginning every time someone makes a new post. People share content (status updates, video uploads, photos and so on) and the social interaction begins.

• When you post a video, article, church event, or any type of content on a social network, you are initiating a conversation. People then Like, Comment, Share or ignore the post. This interactive element completely changes the game when it comes to church communication.’

Page 39: Festival of Congregations Oct 11, 2014

What to post?

Your presence on Social

Media should be the same as

your presence on earth – a

direct outpouring of a life of

worship, faith, and love of the

One who gives you life
