Kids these days are so lucky. There are many kinds of toys for them to enjoy: from electronic gadgets to those simple small building blocks. If parents choose the right ones, they can enhance their kids’ development and skills. A glance at your toys cabinet, amongst the many favorite pieces, I would not be surprised to see at least one that is by “LEGO”. Am I right?

Yes, those colorful bricks with which you can create almost anything you can imagine.

This month, we are recommending the new book by Daniel Lipkowitz and Gregory Farshtey, “LEGO® play Book: ideas to Bring Your Bricks to Life.” They have been with LEGO for many years and really know their toys upside down and inside out. So, you can be sure that all tips to bring your bricks to life are genuine.

While Lipkowitz is almost a LEGO’s home grown guru, Farshtey has authored or co-authored over 35 role-playing game books. Both are compatible in every way: they love reading, especially the Star Wars saga. In one of his interviews, Lipkowitz said that he got a dream job because he got to play with his favorite toys all day. Lipkowitz and Farshtey will show you how to build over 200 different designs which will inspire you to further cre-ate your very own. You will find tips and tricks to get the most out of your bricks. The largest model ever made by LEGO is “X-Wing” which is a set of “star Wars” with 5 million bricks! But have no fear, because our authors guarantee that you could do a lot out of a “handful of bricks.”

Talking about LEGO, I can’t go without mentioning its amazing history. Would you believe that the company has been in the market for almost eight decades already? It began in 1932 when Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter from Billund, Denmark created wooden toys and named it “Lego” which means “play well” in Danish. Simple, yet so meaningful!

Since then, LEGO has reached kids all over the world. The products are now available in 130 countries worldwide with many kinds of blocks and add-on deco-rations. Another amazing fact about LEGO is that, if you still keep your LEGO from your younger years, they will certainly fit well with the new ones that you will buy for your kid! And although there are many variants of LEGO for different age groups, the ones for young children are

compatible with those made for teenagers. So the whole family can mix and match and play together.

I don’t know what inspired Christiansen to create his blocks, but according to many developmental psycholo-gists, construction toys may well be one of the important instruments for children to develop many skills such as motor skills and hand-eye coordination, spatial skills, a capacity for creative, divergent thinking, social skills, and even language skills.

The development of motor skills is the foundation of any child’s growth process. LEGO’s bricks have vibrant colors that not only attract children’s attention but also tempt them to try grasping a piece with their hands. Most children determine to work on it till they can grab one. This helps them develop their motor faster. Children who play with building blocks are ahead of the game when it comes to these other activities. sounds good doesn’t it!

How about older kids or teenagers? What are their benefits? Creativity, of course! Think about what you can build out of these bricks. When you know all the tricks the two authors unlock for you, you will enjoy them even more.

Over the years, LEGO has licensed themes from numerous cartoon and film franchises which you can re-create your favorite characters such as: The Last Air Bender, Batman, Ben 10, Bob the Builder, cars, Harry potter, indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, pirates of the caribbean, prince of persia, speed Racer, spider-Man, spongeBob squarepants, star Wars, super Heroes, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Toy story.

The question is, are these bricks safe for your child? In 2008, European Union (EU) issued strict Toy Safety Directive; and since Denmark is a member of EU, therefore, LEGO has to abide by this rule. The company uses more than 2,000 raw materials for its production all of which passed the requirement. So they are safe!

Before you get the big tips from Lipkowitz and Farshtey, let me share with you a few maintenance tips. Well, if you have the need to wash your LEGO bricks and parts, warm water with light detergent is all you need. Re-member, higher temperatures may affect the quality of the LEGO parts. In any case, do not put your LEGO’s in the washing machine or dishwasher or attempt to dry them in ovens, microwaves or with hair dryers! Simply dry them with kitchen towel or leave them to air-dry.

Everybody has certain skills and talents. If you and your kids love to show off the result of your latest creation, you can share your LEGO design at LEGO.com. Who knows, yours may be a pick hit on the website or you may be inspired even more from other designs that you see there.

so, what are you waiting for? Read the book and pump up the creativity juice with your kid!

9781864704877RURAL MODERNBy RUSSELL ABRAHAMHardback

Rural Modern is the latest from leading architectural photog-rapher and writer, Russell Abraham. It presents a tantalizing selection of modern country houses in a variety of styles and forms. The 21st century has seen rural residential architec-ture take ideas from both the Modern Bauhaus design move-ment and the ever-popular Shingle Style. Issues of sustain-ability and energy conservation are keys to contemporary country house design. The modern country house is a hybrid of several ingenious ideas blended together to create a mod-ern, sustainable and highly livable architecture that respects the past and looks forward into the future.

9783037681572ROUGH iNTERiORsBy SIBYLLE KRAMERHardback

Rough Interiors takes the concept of the existing material as an idea. The building and rooms are taken as they are and the traces of the past are preserved in the sense of remain-ing visible, into which the design concept is integrated. Old shells are given a new life with the aid of very different design interventions. It is the breaks, contrasts and contradictions instead of perfect harmony and smooth surfaces which char-acterize these works. A fascinating interplay between past and present emerges in the interplay of rough ceilings; un-plastered walls and visible concrete beams together with creative re-use ideas, modern materials and innovative form language.

This issue we’d like to thank you 2 members; Dr. Narinthorn Surasinthon and Khun Chaninda Purgchaipaew, they share their experience how parents encourage their kids to love reading.

At present, most parents buy gadgets for their children to be played as a toy. is this suitable for children? Why? At the age of technology, it cannot be denied that gadgets improve the development of children. However, we must choose proper gadgets for children in accord with their age. For example, pre-school children should be raised up by their parents not by the gadgets so that their social skills and emotional management can be developed well. Besides, being im-mersed themselves in gadgets, children are very risky to the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD) as their concentration is too short. On the other hand, gadgets can help older children develop their skills

such as fine movement coordinator, language skills. Parents should limit the time of children spent to gadgets and we have to take care of them physically, emotionally and socially.

How do you advise your children on reading? I have cultured a reading habit to my children since they were young. A basic way to do is reading a fairy tale to them before bed time. A research of Australia confirms that reading books for children since they were young can really improve their read-ing and thinking skills. Another way is that we should be a good example of reading.

On the 44th anniversary of Asia Books, please give us any wordsMy favorite branch is Paragon. I enjoy the services of all staffs there as they always help and advise me for books. Thanks Asia Books for being a great source of reading and I wish Asia Books to be with our next generation as well.

Nowadays, there are many international schools in Thailand, how they are beneficial to the Thai youth? The establishment of international schools in Thailand helps improve the development of educational standards. It also provides an opportunity for parents as they can choose the educational pattern and educational institute for their children. For children, they can improve their language skills in a native-like environment. This also encourages them to join in a new learning style and initiative thinking. Despite a good learning environ-ment of international schools, parents should still implant the Thainess for their children.

You always bring your children to the book stores. How do you implant the reading habit to your children? I’m very lucky that my daughter loves books and reading. Now, she can read by herself. In fact, I read for my daughter when she was very young. I chose the books that are appropriate to her age. For example, when she was one years old, I bought her colorful books. At the age of 1-3 years old, I preferred cartoon books with the characters that come from the stories I read for her. However, I still read her for the difficult books. Bedtime is a good time for our reading.

Besides, on our 44th anniversary, please say anything about Asia Books Asia Books is the first place when I want to find new books. The children activities such as story-telling or arts for children are always organized at Asia Book branches whereas the atmosphere is very friendly as the staffs can advise the books I want professionally, skillfully, and properly.

Readers....lend me your eyes...

This rainy season is getting the most part of me. I can be as gloomy as the nimbus ready to burst out. So, what do I do to get rid of boredom? I went shop-ping, of course! I needed colors to cheer me up in this grey weather.

SLInGSAx-MInISAx(OrAnGE & BLuE)Bt. 550

SASSY SLInGSAx & MInISAx Sassy SlingSax & MiniSax are bursting with bold, bright and beautiful colors, ready to go wherever you want to go-parties, picnics in the park, shopping… it’s a good-lookin’ fun companion!

SlingSax has adjustable straps and can be worn over the shoulder or as a diagonal messenger bag. It even has a hidden side pocket that is handy for your phone and keys, too.

Cute and small, matching MiniSax is made from remaining materials of Sling Sax in an effort to reduce waste. This adorable product makes a great little snack sack with a built-in side pocket. You really need to get a set of these cute “Sax”.

So, when they design these “Envirosax”, you can be sure that they are completely eco-friendly. But more importantly, the colors are so vivacious that will help cheer you

up in this weather. Let’s look at the different kind of the bags.

STABILO EASY If that’s not enough for them, I still have one more magic trick for you. It’s the “Stabilo Easy” pen. Yes, the pen, the new one! You don’t have to worry whether your child is right or left handed because “Stabilo Easy” is the first ergonomic rollerball designed for left and right handers. The grip is just right with relaxed hold to prevent muscles fatigue and pain whilst writing. The ink flow is really smooth and the nib will not break under a lot of pressure nor does it get blot or scratchy. You don’t want your kid to come home with a blot on the shirt, do you? This pen will last for a while as the refill comes with a new tip and easy to replace with no mess. The cap, oh you’ll love it, fits perfectly on the end of the pen making it less likely to lose. They come in many screaming colors that kids love. You need to buy a few for your kid and yourself.

Well, that’s it for this month.Jenni is signing off now

ZOO PACk They are made of durable materials with roomy main compartment, insulated pouch for snacks and adjustable mesh bottle pock-et. The linings are easy to clean and they come with adjustable padded straps. Your kid will want to go to school every day with the “Zoo Pack”.

If you get those “SlingSax” & “MiniSax” for yourself, your kid must have the “Zoo Pack”. You know, those Hollywood superstars

like Dennis Richards, Madonna, and naomi Watts, got at least one bag for their kids. Why? Look how cute they are! The concept of the bag is “where fun meets function”.

That in itself is the best description of these bags. The designs come in many animals, but the most popular ones are “the owl” and “the bee”.
