SINNERS AND
GOD’S WRATH

JEREMIAH 17:9
9 “The heart is deceitful above allthings, and desperately sick; whocan understand it?”

SINNERS AND
GOD’S MERCY
EPHESIANS 1:7
7 In Him we have redemptionthrough His blood, the forgivenessof our trespasses, according to theriches of His grace.
How does God see the believer, and how should the believer see
themselves?

EPHESUS
PAUL WRITES TO THE CHURCH IN
EPHESUS
EPHESUS THE CITY – Major Trade Center
TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS – A Center for False Worship
Paul starts with a specific identity in
Christ –
A SAINT
EPHESIANS 1:1
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesusby the will of God, to the saintswho are in Ephesus, and arefaithful in Christ Jesus.
A WRONG CONCEPT
OF SAINT
CATHOLIC SAINTHOOD
Father James Martin:
-he lays out a ten-step process to
become a Catholic saint
1. Be Catholic.
2. Die.
3. A local devotion grows up around your memory.
4. Your life is investigated.
5. It goes to the local bishop.
6. People start praying for a postmortem miracle.
7. Vatican investigates the miracle.
8. They declare you blessed.
9. People start praying for another miracle.
10. If another miracle happens to confirm your sainthood, they take
a vote; you’re a saint.
11. Then you can be venerated, then schools can be named after you. And churches can be named after you and also a festival day.
BIBLICAL
SAINTHOOD
HOW DO PAUL ADDRESS
THE BELIEVERS IN
DIFFERENT CHURCHES?
EPHESIANS 1:1
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesusby the will of God, to the saintswho are in Ephesus, and arefaithful in Christ Jesus.
ROMANS 1:7
7 To all those who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to besaints. Grace to you and peacefrom God our Father and the LordJesus Christ.
1 CORINTHIANS 1:22 To the church of God that is inCorinth, to those sanctified inChrist Jesus, called to be saintstogether with all those who inevery place call upon the name ofour Lord Jesus Christ, both theirLord and ours.
PHILIPPIANS 1:1
1 Paul and Timothy, the servantsof Jesus Christ, to all the saints inChrist Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons.
COLOSSIANS 1:2
2 To the saints and faithfulbrothers in Christ at Colosse.Grace to you, and peace from Godour Father and from the LordJesus Christ.
WORD STUDY
“Saint”: in Greek “Hagios” - means “blameless, consecrated,
holy”
SAINT– A BELIEVER IN CHRIST
1. BLAMELESS
- Made righteous by Christ’s
atonement
EPHESIANS 2:5-65 Even when we were dead in ourtrespasses, made us alive togetherwith Christ — by grace you havebeen saved — 6 and raised us upwith Him and seated us with Himin the heavenly places in ChristJesus.
2. CONSECRATED
- Cleansed by Christ’s blood
EPHESIANS 2:12-1312 Remember that you were atthat time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealthof Israel and strangers to thecovenants of promise, having nohope and without God in theworld.
EPHESIANS 2:12-13
13 But now in Christ Jesus youwho once were far off have beenbrought near by the blood ofChrist.
3. HOLY
- Set apart in Christ
EPHESIANS 2:10, 19
10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for goodworks, which God preparedbeforehand, that we should walkin them.
EPHESIANS 2:10, 19
19 So then you are no longerstrangers and aliens, but you arefellow citizens with the saints andmembers of the household of God.
Those who are not in Christ are “positionally” a SINNER.
Those who are in Christ are “positionally” a SAINT.
PROGRESSIVE
SANCTIFICATION
In Christ, you’re growing, and learning, and changing by the
power of the Holy Spirit.
EPHESIANS 4:22-24
22 For you ought to put off theold man (according to your wayof living before) who is corruptaccording to the deceitful lusts,23 and be renewed in the spiritof your mind.
EPHESIANS 4:22-24
24 And you should put on thenew man, who according to Godwas created in righteousnessand true holiness.
HEBREWS 4:15
15 For we do not have a high priestwho is unable to sympathize withour weaknesses, but One who inevery respect has been tempted aswe are, yet without sin.
The devil questions the identity of Jesus
LUKE 4:3
3 The devil said to him, "If youare the Son of God, command thisstone to become bread."
LUKE 4:12
12 And Jesus answered him, "It is
said, 'You shall not put the Lord
your God to the test.'"
Jesus knows His identity as God
and rebukes the devil.
A SAINT IS REMORSEFUL OVER SIN.
An emotional feeling of being
sorry
A SAINT WILL NOT REMAIN
REMORSEFUL BUT HE IS MOVED
TO REPENT.
HEBREWS 12:16-1716 That no one is sexually immoral orunholy like Esau, who sold hisbirthright for a single meal. 17 Foryou know that afterward, when hedesired to inherit the blessing, hewas rejected, for he found no chanceto repent, though he sought it withtears.
GENESIS 26:34-35
34 And Esau was forty years oldwhen he took to wife Judith thedaughter of Beeri the Hittite, andBashemath the daughter of Elonthe Hittite: 35 Which were a griefof mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.
Repentance is not only a feeling of
being sorry but involves an act of
commitment to personal change.
HOLY SPIRIT CONVICTION
vs.
CONDEMNATION
ROMANS 8:1
1 “There is now no condemnationfor those who are in Christ.”
EPHESIANS 4:30
30 And do not grieve the HolySpirit of God, by whom you aresealed until the day ofredemption.
A SAINT IS POWERFUL
OVER SIN.
EPHESIANS 1:22-23
22 And he put all things under Hisfeet and gave Him as head over allthings to the church, 23 which isHis body, the fullness of Him whofills all in all.
EPHESIANS 3:9-10
9 And to bring to light for everyonewhat is the plan of the mysteryhidden for ages in God who createdall things, 10 so that through thechurch the manifold wisdom of Godmight now be made known to therulers and authorities in theheavenly places.
ROMANS 16:20
20 The God of peace will sooncrush Satan under your feet. Thegrace of our Lord Jesus Christ bewith you.
The saving grace of God forgives all the sins that we
have committed.
The empowering grace of God helps us to stop committing
those sins.
