ADHAN IS A CALL, HAVE YOU

EVER ANSWERED IT

AS ALLAH SWT WANTS?

HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU HEAR THE ADHAN?

What do you understand from the words of Adhan?

Page 42: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

ADHAN IS A CALL AND A REMINDER THAT IS REPEATED 5 TIMES A DAY

IT IS A GREAT CALL FOR A GREAT RESPONSIBILITY: PERFORMING SALAT

1 - Oneness of God (Allah SWT):

The first phrase of the Athan is: GOD is Greater. God (Allah SWT) Himself is greater than all else, nothing can compare to Him.

Since nothing compares to the Almighty, one can conclude that: nothing or no one is worthy of worship except God Himself (Allah SWT). Thus, neither His subordinates nor any other deities should be worshiped.

Thus, Muslims associate no partners with God (Allah SWT).

One reason for this is to avoid clash of authority that arises from polytheistic beliefs (for example: the Trinity).

ATHAN NUGGETS

Page 47: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

1 - Oneness of God (Allah SWT):

God (Allah SWT) is Omnipotent, and does not need anything from anyone. There is no power or authority except in ALLAH.

The athan introduces Allah as the exact same God worshiped by Judaism & Christianity - the God of Abraham, the God of Moses, the God of Jesus and the God of Muhammad – peace be upon them all. The ONE and ONLY God.

The athan is a constant reminder of the Oneness of God – a concept known as tawheed – which is a core belief of Muslims.

We only worship One GOD; if you worship more than one there will be a problem. If you have more than one captain on a ship, each one will want to go in a different direction!

ATHAN NUGGETS

Page 48: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

ATHAN NUGGETS2 - The Adhan (Call to Prayer):

The “Adhan” indicates that it is time for prayer. This is your time with God. If your spouse will not listen, pour your heart out to God; if your children cannot give you peace, ask God to guide them.

Five times a day, we put the material world on hold as we enter the spiritual realm.

When it comes to prayer we pray 5 times a day to keep us away from sin.

You cannot commit a crime while praying and it helps you avoid bad deeds.

Whatever you are doing, stop and go to God and pray. He is Greater than anything you are doing at the time of prayer.

The sound of the adhan is soothing, humble and peaceful. It puts the listener in a state of tranquility.

Page 49: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

ATHAN NUGGETS2 - The Adhan (Call to Prayer):

Like the church bells for the Christians, the athan is the call to prayer for the Muslims.

The athan raises awareness of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) because the second phrase is: I bear witness that Muhammad is a messenger of God (Allah swt).

Sparks interest in the Prophecy of Abraham (Ibrahim), and the generation of Prophets that came after him. As all the Prophets after Abraham (Ibrahim) were mentioned by name in the scriptures of the three Monotheistic religions. Thus, all the scriptures complement each other.

Islam requires Muslims to believe in all the messengers. Prophet Muhammad is the seal of the prophets.

The call for prayer is constantly being called from all around the world; not a minute goes by without someone, somewhere, praying to God (Allah SWT).

Page 50: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

ATHAN NUGGETS2 - The Adhan (Call to Prayer):

All Muslims – regardless of race, nationality, financial status or rank are called to prayer. This promotes unity and a sense of community. Islam believes in equality of mankind.

The muezzin (the one who calls to prayer), also, is chosen regardless of his race, nationality, or status. In fact, the first muezzin of Islam was a black man – Bilal.

Prayer brings the soul back to life, because thinking of materialistic and worldly-matters sedates the soul from the reality of life.

When you pray, you have to make ablutions (wudhu). When you do this five times a day your sins will be removed just as if you bathed five times a day in the river. This is taken from the following ‘hadith’, or saying of our prophet Muhammad pbuh. Abu Huraira radiyallahu ʿanhu narrates that I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day would you notice any dirt on him?" They said, "Not a trace of dirt would be left." The Prophet added, "That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah blots out (annuls) evil deeds.” Sahih al-Bukhari, 1:10:506

Page 51: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

ATHAN NUGGETS2 - The Adhan (Call to Prayer):

The athan allows the believer to pause, and take a ‘time-out’ from the pressure of life to give thanks, and gratitude to the Lord.

It is a means of refreshing faith and giving the believer more control over his/her faith. Our hearts are cleansed from filth. Praying five times a day promotes discipline, punctuality and helps the believer rid

his/her self from laziness. The athan also reminds the Muslim of the Hereafter. The words of the athan are beautiful and are recited harmoniously. It allows the believer to acknowledge the power their Lord has over them, and to

submit to Him. In Islam, we are reminded that nothing can happen in this life unless GOD wills it to

happen. It is better for you to pray than to sleep. If you sleep, you will not accomplish anything,

but if you pray you will be successful in your life, your work, your family, etc.. The athan equates prayer with success. Success in this world and the hereafter.

Page 52: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

ATHAN NUGGETS

3 – Testimony: Adhan allows the believer to testify the Oneness of God (Allah SWT), and

that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is indeed His messenger. By uttering these words, no believer will reside eternally in hell.

We are reminded of our covenant to God (Allah swt) before coming to Earth. We already all testified that He is our Lord. The athan reinforces this concept as a warning to believers and non-believers.

The adhan is a unique call with words that convey a comprehensive message. Therefore, there is value attached to the call itself, unlike calls in other religions where people use bells or horns. The aqeedah (creed) is announced and our belief refreshed in just two minutes before we pray. The words of the adhan are also very specific:

Example 1: Allah is greater أكبر implies that He (SWT) should come first in اللهour lives because He is (and will always remain) greater than anything or anyone else. At the end of the adhan, ‘Allah is greater’ is repeated implying that He is the Everlasting and whether you respond to this call or no, Allah will always remain greater and you will be the loser if you do not come to pray.

Example 2: The word hayy حي (not ta’ala تعالى ) is used though they both mean ‘come.’ Hayy has the same root word as the words hayah (life) and tahiyyah (greeting).

Example 3: The word falah (not najah) is used though they both mean ‘success.’ However, falah is more than just success as it is linked to cultivation and agriculture( which reminds us that Allah’s reward is( فالحةexpensive and requires hard work – linking success in the Hereafter with work in this life.

Example 4: The Testimony of Faith (Shahada) is a reminder of Tawheed () and the message( الله رسول محمد الله إال إله . (ال

Reflections on the Adhan

Page 68: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

It is a public announcement and a reminder for all: Muslims and non-Muslims. Five times every day, people are reminded of their Creator Who should come first before their family, money, business, etc. It is a wake-up call for those who are completely absorbed in their worldly life unaware that they are heading towards death and the final Judgment every hour and minute. Therefore, when you hear the call to prayer given by the muadhin, let yourself perceive the terror of the Summons on the Day of Resurrection. The call also reminds people of their humanity because the prayers following the adhan are social gatherings that unify and reform humanity against racism and injustice. Values such as brotherhood, unity and equality are instilled in the souls of those who pray together. It is a unifying call that unifies Muslims all over the world.

The adhan is a link between the human being and the Creator (the word salah itself means connection, from صلة in Arabic). This link should be based on love, not just duty and obligation. When you love someone, there is a longing and yearning for this link. If this person calls, you rush to answer the call. Similarly – and for Allah is the highest attribute – our relationship with Allah (SWT) should also be based on love and a desire to worship. That is why the Prophet used to say: “Comfort us Bilal (with the prayer following the adhan)!” بالل يا بها أرحنا

Reflections on the Adhan

Page 69: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

The adhan is an invitation to Ihsan (perfection), success and salvation. If a king invites you, you will feel happy and excited. You will never ignore the invitation, but will look forward to it. The adhan is an invitation, not from a mortal king, but from the King of all kings. Look who is calling you!!! The Prophet وسلم عليه الله used to leave anything he was doing when he صلىheard the call in order to pray:

Al-Aswad said, "I asked 'A'isha (RAA) 'What did the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, do when he was with his family?' She replied, 'He would do chores for his family, and when it was time for the prayer, he would go out.'" And in another narration: “When he heard the adhan, he would walk to perform his prayer as though he didn’t even know anyone sitting around him.”

The call is a form of dhikr – remembrance of Allah. According to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ( وسلم عليه الله Muslims also repeat ,(صلىthe words after the muadhin. We repeat the shahada as well, which is the first article of faith. According to the hadith, anyone whose last words included that there is no deity other than Allah, enters Paradise. There is also dhikr after the adhan.

Reflections on the Adhan

Page 70: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

The word adhan comes from the word udhonأذن (ear in Arabic). You do not just hear the adhan, you listen to it and reflect on its meanings.

The call is an artistic expression that moves emotions. It has a unique melody, tune and rhythm having a positive effect on the human soul. It depends on the human voice – no recording, bell or horn is used. In this respect, it is a form of da’wah (inviting people of other faiths to Islam) and serves as a unique public advertisement for Islam. The Prophet ( الله صلى

وسلم told Abdullah bin Zaid to teach Bilal (RAA) the words of the (عليهadhan which he learned from a vision he saw, for Bilal had the best voice in Madina.

The adhan announces the presence of Islam in the land. In a country like India, you find everything around you reminding you of Hinduism but then you hear the adhan that Islam is there. It also reminds Muslims of their duty towards humanity.

The adhan is prophesied in the Bible in a way which reflects the universality of the call and Islam:

Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth. (Isaiah 42:10)

Reflections on the Adhan

Page 71: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

Reflections on the Adhan

According to Dr. Jamal Badawi, a new song may be a reference to a new scripture in a language other than the language of the Israelite scriptures. This explanation seems to fit closely with the second half of the same verse (Isaiah 42:10) which speaks of the praise of God “from the ends of the earth”. Only in the case of Islam do we find this prophecy realized in amazing accuracy. In all ends of the earth, five times every day the praise of God and of His last messenger, Muhammad, is chanted from the minarets of hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of mosques around the world.

The muadhin has a great reward from Allah. Omar (RAA) said that had he not been the Ruler, he would have preferred to be a muadhin.

Do not forget to pray between Adhan and Iqamah that Allah will guide the visitors to the Truth for this du’a is always answered.

INTRODUCTION TO ADHĀN ( THE ETERNAL CALL)

"O you who believe! When the call is given out for prayer on Friday,

hasten to the remembrance of Allāh and leave off business." (62:9)

Page 82: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

INTRODUCTION TO ADHĀN ( THE ETERNAL CALL)

The adhān (lit. an announcement) is an announcement of the time of prayer, on hearing it Muslims flock to the mosque or to a place of prayer.

The iqāmah (lit. setting upright of a thing or establishing an affair) is a similar call at which those gathered in the mosque arrange themselves into ranks and the prayer service is started.

Page 83: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

Though prayers were said in congregation from the very start when this institution was established very early at Makkah the adhān and the iqāmah were introduced after the flight to Madīnah.

INTRODUCTION TO ADHĀN ( THE ETERNAL CALL)

Page 84: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

The adhān is not only an announcement to the people to gather together for prayer; it is, as well, a declaration of the principles of Islām, made with a loud voice, from every locality inhabited by Muslims.

It is an announcement to the whole world five times a day as to what Islām is and what it stands for.

INTRODUCTION TO ADHĀN ( THE ETERNAL CALL)

Page 85: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

In the takbīr there is a declaration that Allāh is the greatest of all and that, therefore a Muslim bows before none but Allah--Allāhu Akbar the watchword of Islām is repeated no less than six times in the adhān.

In the shahādah there is a declaration of the basic principles of Islām that there is no god but Allāh--God is only One--and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allāh.

INTRODUCTION TO ADHĀN ( THE ETERNAL CALL)

Page 86: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

In hayya 'ala-l-salā (come to prayer) there is a declaration of the Real Message of religion which is the realization of the divine in man. This can only be attained through prayer, by drinking deep at the Divine source.

In hayya 'ala-l-falāh (come to success) we are told that success or full development of the human faculties, can be attained only through prayer or the realization of the divine in man.

The adhān thus serves a double purpose; it is an announcement of the time of prayer and at the same time an announcement of the principles of Islām and the significance underlying them.

It replaces the meaningless ringing of a bell or the blowing of a trumpet by the most effective propaganda of religion that can be thought of.

INTRODUCTION TO ADHĀN ( THE ETERNAL CALL)

Page 90: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

Most of us have heard the sound of ‘Adhan’ or the Call for prayer emanating from mosques at some time or the other. The call for prayer is given 5 times a day as it is required of a practicing Muslim to pray 5 times a day. The actual prayers start within a short time after the call for prayer is given.

INTRODUCTION TO ADHĀN ( THE ETERNAL CALL)

Page 91: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

There is a dedicated person usually to give the Adhan at a mosque and is called the ‘Mu’adhin’. This method of calling people was formulated during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) after other methods like blowing of horns, ringing of bells were rejected. The amazing part about the Adhan is that Adhan will be given every moment somewhere in the world.

INTRODUCTION TO ADHĀN ( THE ETERNAL CALL)

Page 92: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

WHEN WAS ADHAN LEGISLATED?

The Muslims when they came to Madīnah used to gather together and they made an appointment for prayers; no call was given for it. So they talked about it one day. Some of them said, Have a bell like the bell of the Christians; others said, Rather a bugle like the horn of the Jews; 'Umar said, Would you not appoint a man who should sound a call for the prayer. The Messenger of Allāh, peace and blessings of Allāh be on him, said, "O Bilāl! get up and give a call for prayer."

Page 93: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

Anas said,When the number of people increased, they conversed that they should make known the time of prayers by some means which they may recognize. So they mentioned that they should light the fire or ring a bell. Then Bilāl was commanded to callout the adhān, repeating the words, and to say the iqāmah, uttering the words only once.

WHEN WAS ADHAN LEGISLATED?

Page 94: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

It appears from other hadīth that the portion that follows relates to another occasion. A consultation was held but nothing was decided then, though 'Umar seems to have made a suggestion that, instead of ringing a bell or blowing a horn, a man should be appointed to give a call for prayers.

WHEN WAS ADHAN LEGISLATED?

Page 95: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

According to one hadīth 'Abd Allāh ibn Zaid was shown in a vision how to give a call for prayer. So when the Messenger of Allāh came the next day, he informed him: O Messenger of Allāh! I was half asleep and half awake when there came to me one who showed me how to deliver the Adhān.

WHEN WAS ADHAN LEGISLATED?

Page 96: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

WHEN WAS ADHAN LEGISLATED?

The narrator of the Hadīth added, 'Umar had been shown it twenty days previously but concealed it, then he informed the Holy Prophet

Bukhārī refers to this by quoting 'Umar as saying, Would you not appoint a man who should give a call for prayer. It was, however, the Holy Prophet's order--or maybe, he himself had received a revelation, similar to the visions of 'Abd Allāh and 'Umar as some reports show--which gave the sanction to the Adhān.

Page 97: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

Narrated Ibn 'Umar:

When the Muslims arrived at Medina, they used to assemble for the prayer, and used to guess the time for it. During those days, the practice of ADHAN for the prayers had not been introduced yet. Once they discussed this problem regarding the call for prayer. Some people suggested the use of a bell like the Christians, others proposed a trumpet like the horn used by the Jews, but 'Umar was the first to suggest that a man should call (the people) for the prayer; so Allah's Apostle ordered BILAL to get up and pronounce the ADHAN for prayers.

Page 107: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

Page 108: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

It is related about Bilāl that he put his two forefingers into his ears (when delivering the Adhān), while Ibn 'Umar did not put his fore-fingers into his ears;

Ibrāhīm said, There is no harm in delivering the adhān without performing ablution; and 'Atā' said, Ablution is necessary and it is the (Prophet's) practice..

Abū Juhaifah said,

That he saw Bilāl delivering the Adhān. (He said), So I followed him when he turned his face to one side and to the other in the adhān.

Mūsā said,I saw Bilāl (when) he went forth to the Abtah and delivered the Adhān, so when he reached hayya 'ala-l-salā, hayya 'ala-falāh, he turned his neck to the right side and to the left and did not turn round.

PREFERRED PRACTICES OF THE ADHĀN

The imām should have regard for the weakest and make his prayer so light that the weakest man may not feel it a burden.

Islām thus requires that a duty which relates to the prayers should be performed out of love.

Page 113: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

PREFERRED PRACTICES OF THE ADHĀN

Abū Sa'īd Khudrī reported that the Messenger of Allāh, peace and blessings of Allāh be on him, said:

"When you hear the Adhān, say what the mu'dhdhin says."

Yahyā said, some of our brethren related to me that when he (Mu'āwiyah) heard the words, Come to prayer, he said, There is no strength nor power but in Allāh, and he said, Thus did we hear your Prophet, peace and blessings of Allāh be on him, say.

Page 114: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

PREFERRED PRACTICES OF THE ADHĀN

Jābir reported that the Messenger of Allāh, peace and blessings of Allāh be on him, said:"Whoever says when he hears the adhān,'O Allāh! the Lord of this perfect call and ever living prayer, grant to Muhammad nearness and excellence and raise him to the position of glory which Thou hast promised him,'My intercession will be due to him on the day of Resurrection.“

Page 115: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

PREFERRED PRACTICES OF THE ADHĀN

Ziyād said that

He delivered the Adhān, and Bilāl desired to call out the iqāmah but the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allāh be on him, said:

"O brother of Sudā'! The one who calls out the Adhān shall call out the iqāmah.”

Sudā' is the name of a tribe in Yaman and Ziyād was a member of this tribe.

Page 116: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

PREFERRED PRACTICES OF THE ADHĀN

Abd Allāh reported that the Messenger of Allāh, peace and blessings of Allāh be on him, said: "Between every two Adhāns, there is a prayer for him who likes."(He said this) thrice.

By the two Adhāns are meant Adhān and Iqāmah. The interval between the two should be at least such that a man may be- able to say two rak'ahs of optional prayer.

Another hadīth says that there should be an interval such that a man taking his food may finish it, say, about a quarter of an hour.

Page 117: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

PREFERRED PRACTICES OF THE ADHĀN

The Iqāmah thus consists of;

Allāhu Akbar being uttered twice (in Adhān it is uttered four times).

Each of the shahādah sentences once,

Hayya 'ala-l-salā and hayy'ala-l-falāh each once (without turning to right or left),

Qad qāmati-l-salā twice,

Allāhu Akbar and lā ilāha illa-llāh once.

Page 118: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

PREFERRED PRACTICES OF THE ADHĀN

The iqāmah may also consist of all the sentences of the Adhān with the addition in its proper place of qad qāmati-l-salā uttered twice.

Between the delivery of the Adhān and the iqāmah there is another difference. The sentences of the Adhān are delivered leisurely and in as loud a voice as possible, while the delivery of the iqāmah is marked by quickness.

Abu Hurayra said that the prophet, peace be upon him commanded us to by saying, “If you were present in the mosque and the call for prayers has been made, let not anyone of you leave it until he prays.”

THE WORDS OF THE ADHĀN

The repetition of the shahādah a second time as stated in this hadīth is known as tarjī' (lit. returning to a thing again and again).

As the previous hadīth and the one that follows show, the general practice in the Holy Prophet's time was that the Adhān consisted of fifteen sentences;

Page 134: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

THE WORDS OF THE ADHĀN

Allāhu-Akbar four times, ashhadu an lā ilāha illa-llāh twice, ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasūlu-llāh twice (both sentences beginning with ashhadu are known as the shahādah) hayya 'ala-l-salā (pronounced 'ala-s-salā) twice (turning the face to the right),

THE WORDS OF THE ADHĀN

hayya 'ala-l-falāh twice (turning the face to the left), Allāhu Akbar twice and lā ilāha illa-llāh once.

The tarji' or repeating the two shahādah sentences twice again in a still louder voice seems to have been resorted to only occasionally.

Page 136: 6 the eternal-call_workshop_april_27_2013

THE WORDS OF THE ADHĀN

In the Adhān for the morning prayer the sentence al-salātu (pronounced as-salāt) khair-un mina-l-naum (pronounced mina-n-naum) was added after hayya 'ala-l-falāh, and repeated twice.
