At the same time, Jeremiah recognizes the inevitability of Judah’s destruction due to its unrepentant idolatry and immorality. Jeremiah was a prophet of the seventh century B.C. who came from Anathoth, a town a short distance from Jerusalem. Most of his prophetic career was spent in the vicinity of Jerusalem. The Bible – Book of Jeremiah – 29th January 2017

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”(Jeremiah 1:5).

Jeremiah chapter 1, verse 1 identifies the Prophet Jeremiah as the author of the Book of Jeremiah. The Book of Jeremiah was written between 630 and 580 B.C. The Book of Jeremiah records the final Jprophecies to Judah, warning of oncoming destruction if the nation does not repent. Jeremiah calls out for the nation to turn back to God.

Jeremiah began to prophesy in the reign of King Josiah of Judah. Jeremiah was called to be a prophet while he was still a youth. As a sign that there would be no cause for celebration in Judah, God commanded him not to marry. Jeremiah spoke against those who thought that Temple worship protected them from the consequences of sin. He was repeatedly arrested and King Jehoiakim had his prophecies burned, but Jeremiah's scribe Baruch produced a new copy. Jeremiah remained near Jerusalem while the Babylonians captured the city, but later his friends took him to Egypt where he spent the remainder of his life.

We can read of key incidences from the Book of Jeremiah as follows:Jer 1:1-10 - Jeremiah's call : Jer 7:1-34 - Sermon against the Temple : Jer 16:1-4 - Jeremiah not to marry : Jer 36:1-32 - Jeremiah's burned scroll : Jer 43:1-7 - Jeremiah taken to Egypt. The Book of Jeremiah is primarily a message of judgment on Judah for rampant idolatry as stated in Jeremiah 7:30-34 ; 16:10-13 ; 22:9 ; 32:29 ; 44:2-3 . After the death of King Josiah, the last righteous king, the nation of Judah had almost completely abandoned God and His commandments. Jeremiah compares Judah to a prostitute as stated in Jeremiah 2:20, ““Long ago you broke off your yoke and tore off your bonds; you said, ‘I will not serve you!’ Indeed, on every high hill and under every spreading tree you lay down as a prostitute.”

God had promised that He would judge idolatry most severely (Leviticus 26:31-33; Deuteronomy 28:49-68), and Jeremiah was warning Judah that God’s judgment was at hand. God had delivered Judah from destruction on countless occasions, but His mercy was at its end. Jeremiah records King Nebuchadnezzar conquering Judah and making it subject to him (Jeremiah 24:1). After further rebellion, God brought Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonian armies back to destroy and desolate Judah and Jerusalem (Jeremiah chapter 52). Even in this most severe judgment, God promises the restoration of Judah back into the land God has given them: “This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place. (Jeremiah 29:10).

The book of Jeremiah, among other prophecies also presents a prophecy of the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteous Savior. The prophet describes Him as a Branch from the house of David (Jeremiah 23:5-6).

The Prophet Jeremiah had a most difficult message to deliver. Jeremiah loved Judah, but he loved God much more. As painful as it was for Jeremiah to deliver a consistent message of judgment to his own people, Jeremiah was obedient to what God told him to do and say. Jeremiah hoped and prayed for mercy from God for Judah, but also trusted that God was good, just, and righteous. We too must obey God, even when it is difficult, recognize God’s will as more important than our own desires, and trust that God, in His infinite wisdom and perfect plan, will bring about the best for His children. As Christians we can understand this from Romans 8:28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.”
