Sunday morning worship.

1 Kings 21 1 And it came

to pass after these things

(wars), that Naboth the

Jezreelite had a vine-

yard, which was in

Jezreel, hard by the

palace of Ahab king of

Samaria.

Naboth had a good possession

in a great location.

Will it bring him

good or ill?

4

2 And Ahab spake unto

Naboth, saying, Give me thy

vineyard, that I may have it

for a garden of herbs,

because it is near unto my

house: and I will give thee

for it a better vineyard than

it; or, if it seem good to thee,

I will give thee the worth of

it in money.

Sounds reasonable.

5

3 And Naboth said to

Ahab, The LORD forbid it

me, that I should give the

inheritance of my fathers

unto thee.

The Mosaic Law forbade the people to

sell their inheritance.

Ahab didn’t care about God’s Law.

Naboth did.

6

4 And Ahab came into his

house heavy and displeased

because of the word which

Naboth the Jezreelite had

spoken to him: for he had

said, I will not give thee the

inheritance of my fathers.

And he laid him down upon

his bed, and turned away his

face, and would eat no bread.

Discontent is a sin that is its own punishment, and

makes men torment themselves. It is a sin that is its

own parent; it arises not from the condition, but from

the mind: as we find Paul contented in a prison, so

Ahab was discontented in a palace.

Matthew Henry Concise Bible Commentary

Philippians 4 11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for

I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to

be content.

Contentment or discon-

tentment is in the mind.

8

One who has a discontented mind

will never be content.

1 Timothy 6 6-8 But godliness with contentment is

great gain. For we brought nothing into this world,

and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And

having food and raiment let us be therewith

content.

5 But Jezebel his wife came to

him, and said unto him, Why is

thy spirit so sad, that thou

eatest no bread? 6 And he said

unto her, Because I spake unto

Naboth the Jezreelite, and said

unto him, Give me thy vineyard

for money; or else, if it please

thee, I will give thee another

vineyard for it: and he

answered, I will not give thee

my vineyard.

Did Ahab tell the

whole story?

Naboth didn’t

just say, “I

will not.”

10

Leviticus 25 23 The land shall not be sold forever:

for the land is Mine; for ye are strangers and

sojourners with Me.

Naboth was obedient to God.

3 And Naboth said to Ahab, The LORD forbid it me,

that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto

thee.

Sometimes obedience will be costly.

God said.

11

7 And Jezebel his wife said unto

him, Dost thou now govern the

Kingdom of Israel? arise, and

eat bread, and let thine heart be

merry: I will give thee the

vineyard of Naboth the

Jezreelite. 8 So she wrote letters

in Ahab's name, and sealed

them with his seal, and sent the

letters unto the elders and to the

nobles that were in his city,

dwelling with Naboth.

God’s Law

mattered not

to Jezebel.The King could

take what he

wanted.

12

9 And she wrote in the

letters, saying, Proclaim a

fast, and set Naboth on high

among the people: 10 And set two men, sons of

Belial, (worthless, ungodly

men) before him, to bear

witness against him, saying,

Thou didst blaspheme God

and the king. And then

carry him out, and stone

him, that he may die.

Treachery

13

11 And the men of his city, even the elders and the

nobles who were the inhabitants in his city, did as

Jezebel had sent unto them, and as it was written in

the letters which she had sent unto them. 12 They

proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among

the people.

A rigged TrialJesus was falsely tried and sentenced to death.

Don’t be surprised at what evil men will do.

14

13 And there came in two

men, children of Belial

(worthless, ungodly), and sat

before him: and the men of

Belial witnessed against him,

even against Naboth, in the

presence of the people,

saying, Naboth did

blaspheme God and the king.

Then they carried him forth

out of the city, and stoned

him with stones, that he died.

Liars and

murderers

15

Let us, from this sad story, be amazed at the

wickedness of the wicked, and the power of Satan

in the children of disobedience. Let us commit the

keeping of our lives and comforts to God, for

innocence will not always be our security; and let

us rejoice in the knowledge that all will be set to

rights in the great day.Matthew Henry Concise Bible Commentary

Hallelujah!

16

Be amazed at the wickedness of the wicked.

There is nothing they won’t do, given

the right circumstances.

They reject God’s standards, and their

standards are flexible.

17

In this world, innocence will not always

be our security.

Justice is often perverted

in the courts of this world.

18

All will be set to right in The Great Day.

19

Revelation 19 11 And I saw Heaven opened, and

behold a white horse; and He that sat upon him was

called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He

doth judge and make war. 12 His eyes were as a

flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns;

and He had a Name written, that no man knew, but

He Himself. 13 And He was clothed with a vesture

dipped in blood: and His Name is called The Word

of God.

20

14 And the armies which were in Heaven followed

Him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white

and clean. 15 And out of His mouth goeth a sharp

sword, that with it He should smite the nations: and

He shall rule them with a rod of iron: and He

treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath

of Almighty God. 16 And He hath on His vesture

and on His thigh a name written,

KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

What a day that will be, when our Jesus we

shall see. When we look upon His face,

the One Who saved us by His grace.
