Overview of Operating System

OPERATING SYSTEMA set of instruction given to computer running at the

background and provide a user interface to interact with computer hardware.

Types of OS:- Server OS Embedded OS Stand Alone OS

TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEM

EMBEDDED OPERTING SYSTEM


Embedded OSA type of OS that is specially configured for a certain hardware configured and designed for special purpose.

Detail of Embedded OS Hardware that supports Embedded OS. Little Computing Power. Low Memory.

Embedded Operating System

Windows Embedded CE:- It is a scale down OS use for communication, entertainment

and have limited functionality.

Examples:- MIPs SHx Intel x86


Windows Phone 7:-

It works on smart phone. User have access to PIM(personal Information Manager) Function such as Contact list, Calendar etc.

Example:- HTC Corporation Samsung LG Dell Venue Pro


IPhone OS:- It is an Operating System used in

the Iphone and Ipod/I pad touch.

Example:- Iphone Apple TV Ipod touch I pad touch


Google Android:- It is an Operating System designed by

Google for mobile devices. It is used in more then 20 different types of mobile devices.

Example:- Android Apps Android Platform Android Software Android Maps


Embedded LINUX:-

It is scaled down Operating System. It is designed for Smart Phones, PDAs etc.

Example:- Set Top Box Smart TVs


Symbian OS:-

It’s a multi-tasking Operating System designed for Smart Phones. User enter data by keyboard, touch or by stylus.

Example:- Nokia Mobile Sets Samsung Sets Motorola


STAND-ALONE OPERATING SYSTEM

STAND-ALONE OPERATING SYSTEM It is a complete operating system works on desktop computer or a notebook computer.CLIENT COMPUTER The computer using stand alone operating system are also called as client computers. They work in conjunction with the network operating system.e.g.DOS, Window 3.x,Window 95, Mac OS ,Window 2000 professional and Window NT Workstation etc.


DOS (SINGLE USER OPERATING SYSTEM)

PC-DOS MS-DOS Used a command-line interface and menu-

driven interface at the later stage. DOS does not offer GUI so not in use in the

current era.

MACHINTOSH OPERATING SYSTEM(MAC OS) It is the first commercially used GUI in 1984. Latest version of MAC OS is using window internet

explorer and can edit, create and modify the files created on windows and DOS. Large photo-quality icons, enhanced speech recognition and enhanced multimedia capabilities.

LINUX:- It is Unix like Operating System used

Solaris:- It is Unix operating System originally
