How does your media product represent particular social

groups?

Page 2: Question 2

My target audience and aimed social group is people who enjoy either or both the

pop/rock genre, teenagers and young adults and within the E/D demographic.

By naming my magazine ‘Pop Rocks’ it is clear that I have decided to combine both genres of music in my magazine. As I

enjoy both genres and have bought a lot of issues of Kerrang, I feel I have a wide knowledge and advantage in the area of rock. I also decided to combine the genres as I knew I was going to use a female artist and within the rock genre there aren't really any solo female artists, they often fall into the

‘poprock’ genre which is the theme I went for. I didn’t want to go against convention when making my magazine, and I noticed when reading magazines such as Kerrang and RockSound that they also include other genres such as metal, thus generating a

wider target audience. From my research there are no magazines yet that target the pop rock audience so my magazine will be the newest on the market thus enticing a wider audience as I

would be collating a larger audience because I will be attracting the audience of at least two other magazines.

This represents my audience as integrating within music genres.

Masthead

When my magazine was called ‘Reckless Rock’ it didn’t portray the mixing of genres very well and somewhat could end up

giving off a bad impression of the magazine and the audience. It also didn’t conform as well as I had hoped when adding the main image to the front page, it mainly didn’t work because

the artist didn’t portray a ‘reckless’ enough image. Also as a mixture of pop and rock, reckless isn’t a big image

I want to focus on, however it will be somewhat obvious. Adding the extra colours to my masthead also made it more

appealing as it gave more definition to the audience showing they can enjoy both as other magazines don’t portray that.

Images and colour

I chose fonts representative of a younger audience and a pink youthful scheme to appeal to my target audience

of teenage girls. The fonts are simple and quaint which is a typical style of today’s youth. The colours are a combination of pink and purple for the most part they are appealing to my audience which the colour is associated with. The model in the photo has the ideal look of my audience wearing a toned down rock look wearing what is popular fashion but with their own

twist on it often wearing heavier makeup. I found this out from my research on my mood board and audience research. I went to gigs and took photos of artists representative of the audience so that is was more appealing to them, which are featured in the poster images on the front cover and the main image on my

contents page.

Page 6: Question 2

Feature storyThe advertisement and content of my feature story

represents my audience as willing, empowered and self believing. It has an interesting tone as it focuses on

the article theme in which both magazines such as Kerrang and Top of the Pops do, but its light reading so its not overwhelming to the reader. As often many pop magazine feature more gossipy stories I have

adhered to that convention within my contents page as it features both light reading articles and gossip articles, alongside quizzes, reviews, advice and gig guides. I combined key contents page items from both Kerrang and Top of the Pops in order to keep the appeal with both audiences and make my magazine

overall more interesting.

Page 7: Question 2

When thinking about pop representation in my research I decided to use clean images giving the magazine artist a good representation, further portraying her as a role model, as in many magazines artists are seen as role

models. The audience can feel comfortable with the images as they have similar interests, styles and are of similar

age so they find it easy to relate. If my magazine was full of dark colours and old metal bands no one from my expected target audience would buy it, so I enticed my audience with a young pretty artist. As the images give off good representation, my article was somewhat conventional as it touched upon the artist going through a tough time but coming back, so it gives off the stereotypical rock representation of often going through a tough time, but I’ve brought it back to life with a happy lively fun representation bringing in more of a pop representation, by showing how the artist has brought herself together and is still very much caring and passionate about making music and pleasing her fans.
