Dear Readers A 1.0-millimeter metal sheet is hardly thicker
than a standard sheet of paper, and yet there are
Bystronic customers who can actually cut such sheets.
Doing so entails a number of problems: The cutting gas,
which exerts a pressure of 10 bars on the sheet metal,
bends the sheet. And when cutting fine contours, the
laser beam heats up the sheet metal to such an extent
that the material between cuts that are close together
simply melts. It looks as if it would be impossible to cut
a 1.0-millimeter metal sheet using a laser.
Bystronic has won the German Innovation
Award for Steel Design 2015 for the new design of the
Xpert model range. “With their clear structures, the
press brakes represent a particularly successful example
of the excellent design of investment goods,” was how
the award panel explained its decision. The Steel
Innovation Prize is awarded by the German Steel
Federation, the economic policy association of the steel
industry in Germany. Bystronic developed the design of
the Bystar 4020 L, The objective was to implement an
innovative form language that enables efficient
operation of the press brakes, factors in possible
upgrades, and embodies Bystronic’s corporate design.

Bystronic presents its
apprenticeship trades
“Apprenticeships with a future”: This
was the motto under which Bystronic
Laser AG presented its apprenticeship
trades at a trade exhibition in the
municipality of Herzogenbuchsee,
Switzerland, in April.
A special highlight of the exhibition was
an automation line that the apprentices
from Bystronic and Althaus, Bystronic’s
apprenticeship training partner, had
designed and then installed at the
exhibition booth. “Our exhibition booth
showed technology in motion.
This attracted many inquisitive visitors,”
says Roland Wyler, Head of
Apprenticeship Training at Bystronic
Laser AG. When searching for
information about apprenticeship
trades, one often finds phrases such as:
An automation technician develops
electric control systems. Or: A
production mechanic manufactures
components for machines. With the
automation line, Bystronic demonstrated
first-hand what these phrases actually
mean in practice. All the apprenticeship
trades at Bystronic and Althaus were
involved in the project: from commercial
apprentices, IT specialists, and plant
engineers to polymechanics and
automation technicians.

Here at Mugoya we have recently
opened our services for laser cutting
technology to customers within our
region. We are based at Embakasi
Complex where we are amongst the
best providers of steel plate fabrication
in Kenya currently. Mugoya has truly set
the mark being on the frontier of
innovative technology and now show
casing its latest Bystronic laser cutting
technology Mugoya is set out to create
the difference.
We offer a variety of different cutting
technology based on the material. Steel
and Aluminum are the most commonly
used material types. We accommodate
varies design schemes depending on
our customers Preferences. Please read

Material properties
The cutting result on the work piece can
be a perfectly clean cut or a ragged and
burred cut edge. The following are
regarded as the principal influence factors
on the cut quality:
 Alloy elements
 Microstructure
 Sheet surface finish
 Surface treatment
 Beam reflection
 Thermal conductivity
 Melting point
Material Specification
Steel must be either cold rolled or
descaled and oiled. Our recommended
material quality is as follows:
Steel 0.5-10mm Rukki 250 C/ S235JR
Stainless Steel 0.5-25mm X5CrNi18-10/

Cutting Technology
Laser cutting is a technology that uses
a laser to cut materials, and is typically
used for industrial manufacturing
applications, but is also starting to be
used by small businesses, and hobbyists.
Laser cutting works by directing the
output of a high-power laser most
commonly through optics. The laser
optics and CNC (computer numerical
control) are used to direct the material
or the laser beam generated. A typical
commercial laser for cutting materials
would involve a motion control system
to follow a CNC or G-code of the
pattern to be cut onto the material. The
focused laser beam is directed at the
material, which then either melts, burns,
vaporizes away, or is blown away by a jet
of gas, leaving an edge with a high-
quality surface finish. Industrial laser
cutters are used to cut flat-sheet
material as well as structural and piping
materials.
Vaporization cutting
In vaporization cutting the focused
beam heats the surface of the material
to boiling point and generates a
keyhole. The keyhole leads to a sudden
increase in absorptivity quickly
deepening the hole. As the hole
deepens and the material boils, vapor
generated erodes the molten walls
blowing ejecta out and further enlarging
the hole. Non melting material such as
wood, carbon and thermoset plastics are
usually cut by this method.
