What Is Exchange Rate ‘Margin?’

Banks trade currencies with each other in huge volumes and the rates are set according to the ‘buy’ & ‘sell’ (aka bid/ask) demand. The rates that the banks trade with each other is called ‘Inter-bank’ or ‘Mid-market” rate.

The percentage added on or taken away from each transaction is called: ‘Spread’ or ‘Margin’

Banks sells to Third Parties at ‘buy rate+’ or ‘Wholesale Prices’ because they buy in bulk.

How Does This Affect Seller Revenue?

Example:

Sellers UK£ sales revenue Amazon -v- Payoneer on £100,000

Mid-market rate = 1.327 GBP/USD

Amazon apply a margin of 3.75% (1.2772) =$127,720

Payoneer apply a margin of 2.0% (1.3005) =$130,050

Additional revenue per month = +$2,330.00

Additional revenue per annum =+$27,960
