Preparing a Defense

For new construction where there is a possibility of ice forming along the eaves or in the valleys, TAMKO TW Metal and Tile Underlayment should be used as the first layer of protection.

It should extend from the eave’s edge to a point at least twenty-four inches beyond the exterior wall line of the building, and along the entire length of the valley nineteen inches on each side of the center line.

Applying the Underlayment

To help assure protection from the elements, the entire roof must be covered prior to shingle application.

TAMKO number thirty asphalt saturated organic felt is the recommended underlayment for this process.

This applies to new roof or reroof applications.

Applying the Felt

Apply the felt parallel to the eaves starting with the lowest course, lapping each course two inches.

Where the ends join, lap four inches. When covering hips and valleys, always

overlap felt by extending twenty-four inches beyond the center line of the hip or valley.
