Winter Gardening Tips

Obviously the change into the winter months can be a dramatic one and this

applies to most locations on the planet apart from those equatorial locations that

appear to only have one season all year round. For the rest of us though we need to

make sure we are really looking after our garden and preparing for the winter.

Hopefully here you will find a few winter gardening tips that will be useful for you

and your garden during the cold months of the year.

The main problem with the winter months is the temperature and how this affects

any liquid parts of a plant. Once those temperatures start to dip below zero, then

that liquid begins to freeze. This can have a catastrophic effect on the plant and its

cell structure and more often than not a plant can be damaged beyond repair once

this has happened. So it’s first of all time to protect those plants.

If there are plants that you can move, such as those in pots then make sure that you

move these into sheltered locations or indoors if possible. Sometimes moving them

close to your house between couples of walls is enough to escape ground frost. For

any plants that can’t be moved then they will need covering during heavy frosts.

This can be done with upturned pots placed over plants, but remember to remove

them the next day as they will still need daylight when the sun rises.

It is also possible to buy a type of cloth material that you wrap around or cover

larger plants with. This cloth is actually very lightweight and it is also permeable to

sunlight so it can be left on for the entire winter. Although it will have a small cost

it is well worth investing in this material as the protection is superb and you can

use them year after year. Hunt around a few garden supply stores and you will find

that this material isn’t that expensive after all.

It’s also worth checking out which plants are very resilient to cold weather as then

you know these hardier breeds will survive the winter and you can then spend your

time looking after the more delicate ones that need a little protection from Jack

Frost!

And of course it is important that you contact a qualified garden designer who can

help plan your garden to ensure it remains healthy and also interesting during the

cold winter. You may be surprised just how good your garden can look even when

covered in snow!
