The Importance ofExercise In Childhood

Development

Odds are if you’re feeling down, you probably won’t want to getout of bed, let alone put on your

exercise clothes, take a runaround the block. Succumbingto the feeling of wanting to do

nothing will not help your case,

Whether you’re feeling unwellalready, or, say, if you feelnormal but your days are

packed with endless activitiesand no downtime, staying put

will not contribute to yourfeeling of wellbeing.

Engaging in any kind ofphysical exercise, however, canlift you out of those moods andallow you to look beyond it, or

simply help you ensure thatthose moments are less likely to

come on.

So, will taking your dog for awalk or jogging to your localmarket solve depression for

you? Odds are, no… butengaging in a regular exerciseroutine can certainly help you

work through difficult feelings.

Studies show that people whoengage in regular exerciseenjoy a boost in mood and

higher self esteem, versus thosewho do not.

The same holds true forchildren and young adults. SelfEsteem is an essential elementin the healthy development of

children and adolescents.

Self Esteem allows children togrow and gives them theconfidence to try, and to

continue trying, unbeaten, when they fail. Trial “and

error” is an essential part ofgrowing.

Without the confidence or selfesteem to try, children won’t

give themselves the sameopportunities to grow.

Along those same lines, playingsports is one of the perfect

opportunities for children andadolescents to learn these

values, and to learn to try andlearn to fail in a certain safe

environment.

On the one hand, children willget the benefits of exercise: self

esteem, a feeling ofmotivation…

One of the main benefits ofexercise is that it produces

endorphins in the brain, whichlead to a feeling of wellbeing.

This can help self confidenceand self esteem, and generally,

just contribute to a healthylifestyle which can promote

positive childhooddevelopment.

A balance of sports and exercisein a child or adolescent’s life

can help them handle thechanges coming on at those

times.

Endorphins have a stressrelieving effect and help staveaway feelings of depression or

anxiety.

Being able to constantly try, fail, and learn to work with a

team will be a defining factor inany childhood development.
