Waste is something which is of no use or purpose. It consist of things we used to throw away in dust bins.

Wastes are produced in our homes, schools, offices, markets, industries and agriculture

When you eat an banana or an orange you throw away the peel

What do you do with the waste generated in your home ? Do you throw away these things?

TYPES OF WASTES

An land fill area

There are three types of wastes :-1. Solid waste

2. Liquid waste

3. Gaseous waste

Page 4: Waste

There are two types of solid wastes:-1. Bio degradable

2. Non-bio degradable

Bio degradable:-

Biodegradable waste is a type of waste, typically originating from plant or animal sources, which may be degraded by other living organisms

Solid Waste

Non-bio degradable:-

Wastes that are not rotten easily, such as bottles, cans, plastics, vinyl, Styrofoam, and aluminum, are increasing so how to treat them is a worry. Incinerating the rotten wastes is a treatment way, but it can pollute the air or can generate the substances that have bad influence on organisms. And it causes other environmental problems. Therefore, the quantity of wastes generated should be reduced as far as possible, and recyclable wastes should be recycled.

Liquid wastes include industrial wastes such as oil and natural gas refinery byproducts, municipal waste, chemical byproducts, agricultural wastes and radioactive water used as coolants in nuclear power plants. When improperly handled and disposed of, liquid wastes pose a serious threat to human health and the environment because of their ability to enter watersheds, pollute ground water and drinking water.

Gaseous waste is a waste released by industries, vehicles, factories, etc.

There are many ways to manage waste . Some of them are

1.Compostpits 2.Landfills 3.vermicomposting

Managing wastes

Page 10: Waste

Compost is dead plants and animals that have been broken down by various bugs, bacteria and fungi. Compost is used to improve the soil for agriculture and gardening. You make compost faster by piling up all the dead stuff so that it can rot. It's a natural process. There are different methods of making compost. You can spread it out, bury it, pile it up or put it into a container made for the purpose (a compost bin). If the material is likely to attract vermin it's best to bury it in a compost pit, covered with soil. This is a disposal method used for animal carcasses.

Compost Pits

A landfill site (also known as tip, dump or rubbish dump and historically as a midden ) is a site for the disposal of waste materials by burial and is the oldest form of waste treatment. Historically, landfills have been the most common methods of organized waste disposal and remain so in many places around the world.

Vermicompost is the product or process of composting utilizing various species of worms, usually red wigglers, white worms, and earthworms to create a heterogeneous mixture of decomposing vegetable or food waste, bedding materials, and Vermicast. Vermicast, similarly known as worm castings, worm humus or worm manure, is the end-product of the breakdown of organic matter by a species of earthworm.
