HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURES

• A HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE IS MADE OF DIFFERENT SUBSTANCES THAT REMAIN PHYSICALLY SEPARATE. HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURES ALWAYS HAVE MORE THAN ONE PHASE (REGIONS WITH UNIFORM COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES). EX – PIZZA IS A MIXTURE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF INGREDIENTS WHICH IS A HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE.

HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE

•  A MIXTURE WHICH HAS UNIFORM COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES THROUGHOUT. FOR EXAMPLE, AIR IS A HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE OF GASES. A TEASPOONFUL OF TABLE SALT STIRRED INTO A GLASS OF WATER ALSO MAKES A HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE.

• A SINGLE SUBSTANCE OF A DEFINITE COMPOSITION IS CALLED A PURE SUBSTANCE.

   EX- PURE IRON,PURE COPPER,PUREGOLD,PURE OXYGEN,PURE DIAMOND ETC.

HAND PICKING• HAND PICKING IS USED TO SEPARATE SLIGHTLY LARGE SIZED IMPURITIES. IT IS USED WHEN THE QUANTITY OF IMPURITIES IS NOT VERY LARGE. SLIGHTLY LARGE SIZED IMPURITIES CAN BE SEPARATED BY HANDPICKING. HUSK AND STONES CAN BE SEPARATED BY HANDPICKING.

IN THRESHING, THE STALKS ARE BEATEN TO FREE THE GRAIN SEEDS. THRESHING CAN BE DONE WITH THE HELP OF BULLOCKS OR MACHINES. THRESHING IS USED TO SEPARATE GRAINS FROM STALK.

DECANTATION• DECANTATION IS A PROCESS FOR THE SEPARATION OF MIXTURES, BY REMOVING A LAYER OF LIQUID, GENERALLY ONE FROM WHICH A PRECIPITATE HAS SETTLED. THE PURPOSE MAY BE EITHER TO PRODUCE A CLEAN DECANT, OR TO REMOVE UNDESIRED LIQUID FROM THE PRECIPITATE.

FILTRATION AND CHURNING

• FILTRATION IS THE METHORD USED FOR SEPRATING  INSOLUBLE SOLID PARTICLES FROM THE LIQUID.

• CHURNING IS THE METHORD USED FOR SEPRATING LIGHTER PARTICLES OF A SOLID SUSPENDED IN A LIQUID.

EVAPORATION• EVAPORATION IS THE PROCESS OF A SUBSTANCE IN A LIQUID STATE CHANGING TO A GASEOUS STATE DUE TO AN INCREASE IN TEMPERATURE AND/OR PRESSURE. EVAPORATION IS A FUNDAMENTAL PART OF THE WATER CYCLE AND IS CONSTANTLY OCCURRING THROUGHOUT NATURE.
