CREATION OF POLYESTER In 1926, United States – based E.I Du Pont de Nemours and Co. began research into very large molecules and synthetic fibres. This early research headed by W.H. Carothers centered on what became nylon, the first synthetic fibre. Soon after ,in the years 1939-1941, British research chemists took interest in the du Pont studies and conducted their own research in laboratories of Calico Printers Association , Ltd. This work resulted in the creation of the polyester fiber known in England as Terylene.
Terylene was creted by Whinfield and Dickson along with Birtwhistle and Ritchiethey in 1941. It is first manufactured by Imperial Chemical laboratories (ICI)
Polyester is a chemical term which can be broken into poly, meaning many, and ester, a basic organic chemical compound. The principle ingredient used in the manufacture of polyester is ethylene, which is derived from petroleum . In this process, ethylene is the polymer, the chemical building block of polyester, and the chemical process that produces the finished polyester is called polymerization. Extruder is used to produce very fine threads of polyester
.
Polyester is a manufactured product, usually a textile, that is made from synthesized polymers. Polymers are molecules that consist of a long, repeating chain of smaller units called monomers. They have the highest molecular weight among any molecules, and may consists of billions of atoms. Human DNA is a polymer with over 20 billion constituent atoms.

CHARACTERISTICS OF POLYESTER
StrongResilientQuick dryingResistant to biological damage such as mold and mildew
Easy to washResistant to stretching and shrinking
Wrinkle resistant
Retains heatResistant to most chemicals
Abrasion resistant
Set pleats and crease
Highly flammable
TERRYCOTIt is a blend of terylene and cotton.
It has better absorbing power as compared to terylene
It is used for making shirts , skirts and other dress materials.
TERRYWOOLIt is a blend of terylene and wool.
It is warm in addition to all characteristics observed in polyesters.
It is used for making formal suits.
OTHER USES OF POLYESTERPolyester films which is also known as mylar which is intoduced in 1952 is a semi-chrystalline film used in many application such as radio tapes, high quality packaging, proffesional photographic printing, X-Ray film, etc.
