The Story of the Invention of Velcro

• One day George de Mestral was walking with his dog in the forest.

• He observed that some spiny seeds were stuck to his trousers and the dog’s fur.

• He wondered what made the seeds so sticky.

• To answer the question, he looked at the seeds through a microscope.

• He discovered that the spines each had a hook on the end.

• This observation led him to invent a new kind of fastener for clothes and shoes. He called his invention ‘Velcro’.
