Introduction of MazzicanIn 2009 EADD in collaboration with Heifer International ,Global Good, Kenya Dairy Board and Government of kenya designed a project in Rift Valley, to help farmers transport and store milk that explores the opportunity for invention to improve the livelihoods of small holder dairy farmers

They worked closely with farmers across the region to undertake a value chain assessment

Gap analysis suggested a focus on milk quality and enabling value addition by farmers as an opportunity for technology innovation

Page 5: Demonstrating the Mazzican

Problem & opportunity statement1. Post harvest milk losses in Kenya

estimated at 95 million litres, $22.4 million annually

2. Further US$ 23 million lost through transport inefficiencies

3. Majority of small holder farmers and groups transport their milk in unhygienic recycled plastic containers

Hygienic food grade Mazzi-can offers a safe alternative• Saves on transport• Spill proof• Light weight• Pocket friendly• Durable• Purpose built• Made of virgin plastic• Made in Kenya

Milk Quality Factors influencing raw milk quality: • Farmer hygiene • Cow health –Mastitis, Feed quality & nutrition • Cooperative hygiene & practices • Adulteration • Transportation of Milk –Transport logistics (Including

timing of collection) • Containers used -Unable to determine milk quality upon

receipt at the Coop

Features and Principles

Page 9: Demonstrating the Mazzican

With concerted support of GoK & industry stakeholders1. MTS as default container for all small holder farmers 2. Reduction in losses due to spillage & spoilage and cost of

transporting milk from farm to MCCs – more income for SHDF

3. Significant contribution to food safety 4. More investment in development of milk transportation

systems building MTS experience5. Employment generation – 20,000 people

Expected outcomes and impacts –

Idea to product -1.1. UnderstandingUnderstanding• farmers challenges in milk handling• raw milk supply chain2.2. DesignDesign & development• prototype Milk Container3.3. AnalysisAnalysis• milk sampling and testing on quality at Analabs

Laboratory & JKUAT• Application and usage

4.4. Redesign & AnalysisRedesign & Analysis• milk container• microbiological Analysis at Analabs• milk nutrition Analysis at JKUAT5.5. Pilot test implementation and report Pilot test implementation and report • awareness creation/training to dairy stakeholders• Tests, analysis and reporting6.6. CommercializationCommercialization• licensing• Investment, manufacture & sale

Pilot Study ParticipantsPilot Study Participants• 5000 individual farmers, 1000 traders• 300 Retail outlets • 50 Co-ops @ average active membership ~ 3500/co-op

Page 12: Demonstrating the Mazzican

Pilot Discoveries & Learnings

ProductProduct• Need for variety of sizes• Height of MC an issue • Ratio of Funnels to MC much higher than anticipated• Funnel alone is valued due to ability to detect mastitis

UsersUsers• > 90% would buy MC again• Ease of cleaning reduces - saves time & water• Milking process improved - Less spillage, 2 handed milking improves out put

by 20%SellingSelling

• Education, training are important• Direct sales w/ uplifters is most effective• Check off system is important• Momentum is building; more word of mouth sales

Policy/RegulatoryPolicy/Regulatory• Close communication with KDB (even more is better)• Better understanding/communication of policy challenges (i.e. plastic)

Partners and Endorsements

• New KCC• Kenya Dairy Producers Association• Nestle Equatorial African Region• DeLaval• enya County Government officials• Dairy Cooperative Leadership and• Kenya Dairy Board

Page 15: Demonstrating the Mazzican

Future Plans

1. Already we have penetrated in kenya and distributed over 12,000 Mazzican till to date both through Ngos,County Government and parastatals, cooperatives.

2. Appoint distributors in Eastern Africa

3. Ensure that the overall goal of Milk quality distribution and storage is implemented not only in kenya but Africa as a whole.

4. Empower rural Dairy farm to increase there income generation through dairy farming

Page 16: Demonstrating the Mazzican
