The worst nuclearaccident that occurred on 26April 1986 at the ChernobylNuclear Power Plant inUkraine.An explosion and firereleased large quantities ofradioactive particles into theatmosphere, which spreadover the area.

The disaster began duringa system test at reactornumber 4 of theChernobyl plant. Therewas a sudden andunexpected power flow,and led to a series ofsteam explosions.

On the morning of 28 April,workers at the ForsmarkNuclear Power Plant(approximately 1,100 km fromthe Chernobyl site) were foundto have radioactive particles ontheir clothes, yet there was noaccident occurred in their area.

Within a few hours of theexplosion, manytownspeople of Pripyatfell ill. Later, they reportedsevere headaches andmetallic tastes in theirmouths.

DEATHA report places the totalconfirmed deaths fromradiation at 64 as of 2008.Some emergency workersdied because of radiationsyndrome, nine children whodied of thyroid cancer and anestimated total of 3940deaths from radiation-induced cancer and leukemia.

MUTANTSMutations in bothhumans and otheranimals increased.On farms in NarodychiRaion of Ukraine, forinstance, in the first fouryears of the disasternearly 350 animals wereborn with gross.

RADIATIONEven today, radiationlevels are so high that theworkers responsible forrebuilding thesarcophagus are onlyallowed to work five hoursa day for one month

HISTORY SITEIn 2011, Ukraine opened upthe sealed zone around theChernobyl reactor to touristswho wish to learn more aboutthe tragedy that occurred in1986.Recovery projects had alsobeen conducted in order todecontaminate the effect ofChernobyl.
