INTRODUCTION

My portfolio was separated into three sections: the expository, reflective

and analytical. The topic “Global Warming” was chosen because of the love I

have for the environment and how its effects have affected Trinidad. It is my

choice to explore the effects and causes of global warming as a means of

gathering information on its on-going destruction in Trinidad and Tobago.

Global warming is an increase of average earth’s surface temperature air and

the ocean. This increase in temperature in the atmosphere is due to the

increase of carbon dioxide in the air.

In the expository section I presented for 10 minute the issues and

challenges of my topic as well as expository allowed me to assess the values of

the research sources. In my reflective section, I creatively expressed myself on

my theme where I choose the genre of a poem, the poem is entitle “warmth.”

Finally, the analytical section dealt with exploring my poem in-terms of

language variations and communicative behaviors. Thus, the intended

audiences for my portfolio are teenagers and adults for whom I intend to

publish my poem in the Daily Express for all members of my community to view

and read.

RATIONALE

I have chosen the theme global warming in my reflective piece to

illustrate the important of global warming and how it can affect the

nation. The theme I choose is global warming because it is one of the

man-made disasters that have affected the nation. I am targeting

more the teenagers and adults because I think that they pay a great

role in the environmental system. I am doing this topic to capture

one’s attention of global warming. For this topic in order to capture

the audience attention, the genre I will use is a poem which will be

known as ‘Warmth’.

I have chosen this genre because I think that the audience will be

most interested in a poem that is that they will read the poem and

understand the meaning and concept of the poem. The audience

needs to be informed about this man-made disaster, and how it is

affecting the country. With the audience aware of global warming,

they will be more careful on how they disposal of their garbage. This

change of events can help lessen global warming in the whole world

including our country which we occupy.

WARMTH

A problem we face every day of our lives

The heat that we feel from the sun light.

The smoke from cars, trucks and factories

Makes too much of carbon dioxide for all our trees.

The build-up of carbon dioxide in the air

Causes the ozone layer up there to deplete.

Trees can’t photosynthesize fast enough

To build the ozone layer right back up.

The thinner the ozone layer gets each day,

The more we have to pay, pay, pay.

Page | 5

REFLECTIVE PIECE

Page 6: Sample 21Communication studies I.A / S.B.A

We have to stop the pollution of carbon each day,

Or we will regret it someday.

The root of the trees still intact with the ground,

Like a plague passed through a town.

A place full of life, every species all around,

Turn into a place of corpses and no sort of life.

The increase in heat and the shade we seek,

Is caused when the cutting of every tree we meet.

Makers of carbon run the street each day,

No one knows the price we have to pay.

Less resources due to the heat that causes drought,

Making us import for all about.

Page | 6

Page 7: Sample 21Communication studies I.A / S.B.A

Too many smoke from the factories we build,

Those are the things that will get us killed.

Spray cans and batteries we carelessly throw away,

Have harmful chemicals which are let out each day.

We doh think we do this each day,

That causes all these problems we face today.

These chemicals can weaken the atmosphere,

That’s why it is getting hotter every year.

This is affecting places around the world,

It is even melting the ice-bergs.

In Antarctica the ice is melting really fast,

Page | 7

Page 8: Sample 21Communication studies I.A / S.B.A

And drought is killing all the grass.

The sea level continuously rising every year

Flooding in low land areas “geezs” people live there

The government is trying new things to help T&T,

Like solar panels, tree planting and compress gas.

These things are used to reduce carbon dioxide gas,

Which are made from our trucks and cars.

Compressed gas is released to the country,

Because the reduction of carbon is a big responsibility.

Environmental clubs is made in schools,

To show children to follow government rules.

Page | 8

Page 9: Sample 21Communication studies I.A / S.B.A

Like an earthquake not knowing when it will start,

Will cause destruction when it pass.

Global warming is something we have to face,

To make this world a better place.

The government providing bins for we to use,

Still there’s garbage on the ground in our classrooms.

They tried their best to fix the problem,

Like recycling bins, but we not using them.

Trucks with flies rome the street each day,

To extract garbage, from the places we stay.

The government providing all these service, for our country,

Page | 9

Page 10: Sample 21Communication studies I.A / S.B.A

Yet still the place is so filthy.

Government rules is that compressed gas we should use,

To stop the emission of carbon in the air.

They also said we must plant lots of trees,

For cooler places, makes cooler breezes.

Bins are used, to put garbage in,

So why people is not listening.

Acting like theirs no bin in their house,

Then they wonder, how ah get flood-out.

Like a new born, knowing not what a bin is used for,

Throwing their garbage not in bins, but on the floor.

Bins are hear, for us to use,

Page | 10

Page 11: Sample 21Communication studies I.A / S.B.A

We have them in the streets, homes and schools.

Some learn from their mistakes, some don’t appreciate,

The life we make from the risk we take.

Empty vessels watch on, waiting on the day,

The day they are cleaned and life goes on,

A day they will remember, from now on

A battle we are losing, which changes the world,

Forget about the environment, just to achieve a goal.

Life on the ground, was standing up strong,

But cannot complete with heat all day long.

Dead low lands, fills with water real fast,

Page | 11

Page 12: Sample 21Communication studies I.A / S.B.A

Because of no grass, and no place to pass.

The earth cries on its hills,

And cover the houses which we build.

Burst veins wash close-by houses away,

That is a wrong place to stay.

Knowing not, the pain life is feeling, where they stay,

Doing all these things they do each day.

If continued it won’t be nice for us,

For this is a problem we have to stop.

Trusty bodies in homes each day,

Stock up on water every day and prey.

Page | 12

Page 13: Sample 21Communication studies I.A / S.B.A

For this to stop they have to change their ways,

How they treat their country and the place they stay.

Trusty grounds not suited for growing crops,

Tears from clouds fall, sadly for us.

Liquid will cost as much as silver and gold,

What will we do? But it til we grow old.

Everything is connected someway somehow,

So we better know what we are doing from now.

For all species to survive on the earth,

We need to stop this dangerous epidemic growth.

Less carbon dioxide in the air,

Page | 13

Page 14: Sample 21Communication studies I.A / S.B.A

Will increase the oxygen in the earth’s atmosphere.

Like a clean blue sunscreen placed on the earth’s skin,

The heat will fine it had to get in.

Green grass dance in the cool breeze,

We can now grow crops and plant trees.

Roots keep the land up firm and strong,

There will be no slips, this time around.

Stop global warming we must do,

To save the country, our lives too.

We must stop the littering of paper on the floor,

And the over-gazing of cows, no more.

Page | 14

Page 15: Sample 21Communication studies I.A / S.B.A

Cutting down trees is a bad thing to do,

Because they don’t grow back fast for me and you.

Garbage is made for bins not rivers and streams,

Because this can cause flooding indeed.

Use compressed gas as the government says,

So less carbon is let out each day.

Keep your surroundings clean all day somehow,

Or this will affect you someday, not now.

Stop this now, so it will have no pain, no more,

Prevention is better than cure.

ANALYTICAL

Page | 15

Page 16: Sample 21Communication studies I.A / S.B.A

For the purpose of the analytical section my reflective item will be

used, which a poem is entitled “warmth.” The poem was about global

warming and its causes and effects, it also showed how it affected

Trinidad and Tobago. The poem also included what are the causes of

global warming in Trinidad and how to reduce it. And it also shows

how to reduce your carbon footprint.

My poem will be examined in the two following areas:

communicative behavior and attitudes to language. Communicative

behavior is where I used symbols in my poem. These symbols for

example “the heat”, giving the reader an insight on how the sunlight

feels. Also “the sea level”, the word sea level emphasizes on the

amount of water in the sea which increased by global warming. And

other communicative behavior is “garbage on the ground.” which

shows an image of when people don’t dispose of their garbage

responsibly, giving an image of garbage on the ground. Also “place of

corpses”, this emphasizes on an image of when plant life dies due to

the cause of drought. Two last communicative behaviors it will talk

about in my poem is “ice melting really fast, giving an image how in

Antarctica the ice is melting causing the sea level to raise, the ice is

Page | 16

Page 17: Sample 21Communication studies I.A / S.B.A

melting because of global warming. And the other is “ozone layer up

there to deplete,” showing an image that the amount of carbon

dioxide in the air, is causing the ozone layer to be damage the lessen

it, which we need to protect us from the harmful ultraviolet rays.

The other analyze is attitudes to language. The register I used was

frozen. This was maintained throughout the poem to give the reader a

view that no response is required. The person will read the poem and

just understand what it is all about. They will not respond to the

poem but just understand what it’s all about.

Conclusion

Page | 17

Page 18: Sample 21Communication studies I.A / S.B.A

In conclusion the topic global warming was about how it came to be. It also showed its causes and its effects of it in Trinidad. Trinidad is a small country and is greatly affected by global warming. This project will shoe you ways to reduce you carbon foot print and how to cope with global warming.
