• 250 members who are directly elected through a system of Party-list proportional representation and serve five-year terms.

• Parties must receive at least five percent of the vote 

nationally to gain parliamentary 

representation. 

Currently only three parties are represented in the Parliament:  FRELIMO,  RENAMO  and  Democratic Movement of Mozambique

The Judicial Branch

The judiciary comprises a Supreme Court and 

provincial, district, and municipal courts.

• In 2000 and 2001 Mozambique was hit by floods which affected about a quarter of the population and destroyed much of its infrastructure.

• In 2002 a severe drought hit many central and southern parts 

of the country, including previously flood-stricken areas.

• The devastating floods slowed GDP growth to 2.1% but a full recovery was achieved with growth of 14.8%.

• In 2012, large natural gas reserves were discovered in Mozambique, revenues from 

which might dramatically change the economy.
