About the project
Mozambique Openhttp://2g1319.ssvl.kth.se/~csd2002-mozambiqueopen
The Goal• Provide Internet connectivity in 6 university
buildings in Maputo
• Important requirements:– Open.Net– Wireless LAN solution– Computer labs
About the project

Time line• January - March: Stockholm
– Project starts– Design of the network– Testing
• April - End of May: Maputo– Implementation
• End of May: Stockholm/Maputo– Course deliverables– Implementation continues

Servers
CIUEM server room with the MzOpen servers
Mozambique Openhttp://2g1319.ssvl.kth.se/~csd2002-mozambiqueopen
• Hard to plan in advance from Sweden
• Heavily delayed equipment
• Missing tools
• No power
• Problems with transportations
Reflections from implementation
Mozambique Openhttp://2g1319.ssvl.kth.se/~csd2002-mozambiqueopen
• All servers up and running
• All radio links up and running
• UEM buildings– Computer labs in 4 student residences– One lab in need of reconstruction– One building connected outside the open
network
Network status
Mozambique Openhttp://2g1319.ssvl.kth.se/~csd2002-mozambiqueopen
• System handed over to CIUEM
• CIUEM owner and so far only ISP connected
• Easily expandable to connect more buildings and more ISPs
• CIUEM responsible for maintenance
• 2 students per residence trained for basic trouble-shooting
Future and maintenace
Mozambique Openhttp://2g1319.ssvl.kth.se/~csd2002-mozambiqueopen
• Provides Internet connectivity for students
• Computer labs with stationary computers
• Other ISPs than CIUEM can connect
• Wireless cells
• Easy installation and expansion in buildings
Good solution?
Network properties
Mozambique Openhttp://2g1319.ssvl.kth.se/~csd2002-mozambiqueopen
• No central storage of user files or configuration
• Open.Net – designed for laptops
• Demand for ISPs other than CIUEM?
• Need for wireless cells?
Good solution?
Drawbacks
Mozambique Openhttp://2g1319.ssvl.kth.se/~csd2002-mozambiqueopen
• Computer labs– Wired networking with static configuration– Centralized accounting with storage for user files
and configuration
• Laptop users– Wireless access points in cells– Use slimmed Open.Net with CIUEM as only ISP
Good solution?

The country
Mozambique Openhttp://2g1319.ssvl.kth.se/~csd2002-mozambiqueopen
• No conflicts within the team
• Communication problems
• Health problems
• Personal security
Mozambique
Working conditions
Mozambique Openhttp://2g1319.ssvl.kth.se/~csd2002-mozambiqueopen
• Hospitality
• Friendly and helpful people
• Team adventures– Safari in Krüger National Park– Inhambane– Inhaca island
Mozambique
Experiences
Mozambique Openhttp://2g1319.ssvl.kth.se/~csd2002-mozambiqueopen
• Internet access in university buildings
• Open.Net concept
• The network deployed is a working solution, but maybe not perfect
Summary
What we want you to remember
Mozambique Openhttp://2g1319.ssvl.kth.se/~csd2002-mozambiqueopen
• They were not tanned!
• Mozambique is a poor but groovy country
• We will see more from the Kruger National Park in their exhibition.
