Four themed tours to the Hontomin CO2 Storage Plant were developed.

These included a set of activities in Hontomin village.

The tours have been designed for groups of 20 children, and last approx.

4hrs - including the bus trip to Hontomin.

The Hontomin CO2 Mystery Tour…

Clue 1: The molecule, which has to be kept deep

underground, is hidden in the rock near the church.

• The children will find a container with small foam balls,

and some sticks to connect them; they have to create a

CO2 molecule and draw the element symbol based on a

drawing. They keep the molecule they have made until

the end of the Mystery Tour. If the molecule is well

constructed, they will obtain the next clue.

Clue 2: Search the yellow house where scientists monitor if

the Earth is moving, if you create a good tremor, the scientist

will give you a better clue!

• The yellow house is the office of CIUDEN in Hontomín,

where a seismograph is located; jumps will create a

vibration that has to be higher than a certain magnitude,

then the “scientist” will give the children a new clue to

continue with the tour…

Clue 3: You will find the magic rocks that are used to store CO2.

• The children have to collect both reservoir and seal/ cap rock

samples in a certain part of the village - if they succeed, they

obtain their next clue.

By now each child should have a CO2 molecule, a reservoir rock and

a seal/ cap rock, if they want to continue with the game…

Clue 4: If you have “all the ingredients”, look for the scientist with a

white lab-coat, who is sleeping on a bench in the village.

• The monitor has to wait sleeping on a bench with a poster, which

says… “You have to guess the magic word or I won´t wake up”.

Once the Mystery Tour is finished, the children will be guided to the

CO2 Storage Plant with all the stuff they have collected. There they

will make a model of a CO2 store, explaining why we need a

reservoir rock, a seal/ cap rock, and where the CO2 molecule will be

stored. Finally, they are given a short explanation of the journey of

the CO2 is given.

Materials required: Lab coat, wig, paper, rock cores, small foam balls and cocktail sticks to

make molecules, laminate paper for the clues.

To make the CO2 storage models, use the activity explained in the “CO2, Do I Know You?” file.

Wine and CO2

• The first wine tasting event was called “Geology & Wine”.

• It focussed on the analysis of different certificates of origin from

the Castilla y Leon wine making region, highlighting the impacts

of weather and soil characteristics, as well as the different types

of grapes.

• During the explanation, participants all got a taste of each variety

being discussed.

Wine and CO2

• The second event - “Wine & CO2”, focussed on the role of gases like

carbon dioxide and oxygen in the process of wine creation.

• Described the different processes involved for different wines including

carbonic maceration or sparkling wine.

• The session closed with an introduction to professional wine tasting.
