DESCRIPTION

Dr. Apirana Mahuika (Chairman) of the Iwi (tribal) leadership group addresses Prime Minister John Key and his senior Ministers of the Government's rejection of a substantial proposal by Maori to Government. The Proposal will: - Create 50,000 new and permanent jobs for Maori people in Maori communities desperate for employment; - Restore $NZ400 million of value lost as a result of government policy; - Attract a further $NZ800 million of foreign direct investment targeted at Maori land development; - Plant 100,000 hectares of new forest per year for 10 years. - The biggest single forest development project in New Zealand enabling New Zealand to meet it's international emissions reduction targets over the medium term; - Stimulate a whole new clean technology industry around the $NZ37 billion Maori economy; - Add no extra cost to New Zealand households and businesses; - And, not cost the New Zealand taxpayers a single dollar.

Prime Minister John KeyWaitangi Iwi Leaders 2014 Forum

Sir, welcome back. In December 2013, you rejected our constructive $2.0 billion proposal towards 50,000 new jobs for our people (from a $15 carbon floor price) to address the $NZ600 million loss suffered by Iwi as a direct result of your policy.

I strongly urge that you and your cabinet (and officials) immediately reflect on your decision and our concerns towards working closely with Iwi leaders in the next few weeks and months on options to substantively address our concern on these matters.

Our Resolutions here at Waitangi this week

1. Iwi Chairs receive and note the progress made on climate-change;2. Iwi Chairs approve the detailed 2014 Climate-change Escalation Strategy and Media Plan; 3. Iwi Chairs approve efforts to collaborate internationally with First-Nations and other indigenous people

on climate change and energy policy; and4. Iwi Chairs approve the Key messages to be tabled with Prime Minister John Key at Waitangi 2014.
