Kia ora anō Adam, ngā mihi Many thanks for your patience. MANA has not yet developed a comprehensive fisheries policy so I’ve just included some interim points that have been confirmed to date. Internet MANA interim fisheries policy:

         Protect the seabed and marine environment:

o   Ban fracking and cancel deep sea oil exploration and drilling.

o   Ensure that polluters pay to clean up the impacts of their activities, but without the

use of toxic ‘clean up’ chemicals like corexit.

o   Reinstate the right to protest at sea.

         Properly manage and regulate fishing:

o   Review fisheries legislation and the Quota Management System to ensure the

original objectives are being met.

         Uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi:

o   Give hapū and iwi decision making powers equal to central and local government

in developing environmental policies relating to biodiversity, prospecting, the management of coastal areas, and RMA plans so they can properly exercise kaitiakitanga over lands, coastal areas, and waterways. 

o   Action Section 33 of the RMA which allows local authorities to hand over

functions, powers and duties to iwi.  We will support and resource hapū and iwi and their kaitiaki to undertake these responsibilities.

o   Repeal the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act and replace with a

system of tūpuna title that includes covenants for public access to beaches.

o   Review the operation of the Maori Fisheries Act and quota claw-backs against the

original intention of the Act. 

         Protect endangered marine species:

o   Ban shark finning and require all shark species to be bought ashore whole.

o   Prohibit all activities harmful to Maui’s dolphins in their habitat, including set and

trawl nets, oil and gas exploration, and seabed mining.
