Western Pacific – Typhoon Haiyan

As of 4:00 a.m. EST (Warning #25)

• Located 467 miles ESE of Da Nang, Vietnam

• Moving WNW at 21 mph

• Max sustained winds 120 mph, w/gusts to 150 mph (Cat 3)

• Overall weakening trend indicated; however, some slight

strengthening is forecast prior to landfall

• Landfall over central Vietnam is expected in the next 24 hours

• Media sources report approx. 1,200 fatalities in the Philippines

• Significant damage to property and communication

infrastructure reported in the Philippines

• No requests for FEMA assistance; no threat to U.S. territories

GOCE Satellite Re-entry

• European Space Agency’s (ESAs) Gravity Field and Steady-State

Ocean Explorer (GOCE) satellite re-entry

• U.S. predicts re-entry to occur around 11:55 p.m. EST on Nov 10 (with

an uncertainty window of about 5 hours)

• Maximum of 43 fragments projected to reach the surface of the earth

o 8 pieces weigh over 6 pounds; largest piece is 209 pounds

o No exotic or toxic materials on satellite

• The odds of any damage remain exceptionally slight:

o On average, an old spacecraft or rocket body reenters once a week

o After more than 50 years of reentries, no significant property

damage or human casualties have been reported

• FEMA NWC remains at Watch/Steady State (monitoring)
