Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national

commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were

placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at

Arlington National Cemetery.

Charles Stuart MacKenzie, a sergeant in the Seaforth Highlanders, who along with hundreds of his brothers-in-arms from the Elgin-Rothes area in Moray,

Scotland went to fight in the Great War.

Sergeant MacKenzie was bayoneted to death at the age of 35, while defending one of his badly injured fellow soldiers in

the hand-to-hand fighting of the trenches.

Joseph MacKenzie wrote and sang a haunting lament in memory of his great-grandfather
