For starters, you should buy fresh beans whenever you can. Fresh beans are part of the reason coffee shop coffee tastes so great. Be careful where you buy your coffee from. Fresh beans kept in clear containers won't have as good a flavor as beans that are stored properly.

If possible, you'll also want to grind those beans yourself. A simple electric blade grinder isn't very expensive, and will go a long way towards making your coffee taste better. The finer the grinds, the fuller the flavor.

When brewing your coffee, make sure to always use good water. Tap water can have a negative impact on the taste of your coffee. Use filtered water or bottled spring coffee instead. You'll taste the difference right away.

While you may not give much thought to the filters you buy, cheap paper filters really do lead to inferior coffee. However, that doesn't mean you need to shell out for expensive filters. Simply look for filters that are oxygen-bleached or dioxin-free. If you're willing to spend a little more, pick up a gold-plated filter.

Make sure your coffee maker doesn't get too hot! Better coffee makers regulate water heat, but some cheaper models don't. If yours doesn't, it's time for an upgrade.

Clean your coffeemaker regularly. Once a month, run a vinegar solution or a coffee cleaner through it to help dissolve mineral deposits. Afterwards, rinse it thoroughly. Your grinder and your storage containers should also be cleaned on a regular basis.
