I finished high school in 2006.
The same year that twitter
launched and apple introduced
yet another ipod.
But there’s more to life than
tweeting about headphones.
Armed with a HAVO degree
in Mathematics & Biology,
this digital native was ready
to make things happen.
But what?
There were
So I went with my heart:
taking my passion for animals,
I started training as a vet nurse.
so many options,so many things to explore.
But my head didn’t like it. I realised animal
nursing wasn’t for me
it’s true what they sayabout dog owners,
by the way.
AdventureSo I picked up my diploma
and prepared for a new adventure.
With two friends and a few dollars,
I backpacked across Australia for half a year.
And learned the Aussie lingo.
Could I make a career out of adventures?
Well, if you don’t ask you don’t get.
I applied to be a Navy officer.
But they said something about me
being too young to captain a ship!
I was thinking Admiral.
OléSo I knuckled down
and studied for a BA in
International Business & Management at HU in Utrecht* instead.
Finally, my head and heart were
in perfect unison.
(*There’s no better place to learn strategy, marketing, business, IT, globalisation, logistics,
and international management in The Netherlands.Did I mention I was Dutch?)
OléAs part of my bachelor degree
I spent a semester in Spain…Olé!…where a minor in online marketing
led to a major career decision.
I wanted to be a marketeer.
So, for my final five-month internship
I went back to the UK
to join LeasePlan’s marketing team.
It was a journey through every marketing process.
Car leasing companies don’t give anyone a free ride
(not even interns).
I created a strategic marketing plan and
developed a social media strategy for my thesis.
There’s more to it than tweeting about cars.
I managed several
marketing campaigns.
I learned about the
principles of
(a simple idea with huge impact)
and we implemented Marketo(a marketing automation tool).
And I contributed to a
rollout of a new customer
segmentation model.
It made a strategic difference
to the way we market and drive
relevant communication.

That involves more great marketing. If you’ve got a challenging marketing role that
would suit an adventurous graduate then I’d like to tell you the rest of my story.
