INDIAN TOBACCO COMPANY: AN OVERVIEW

• ITC Limited or ITC is an Indian conglomerate headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal.

• Its diversified business includes five segments: Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), Hotels, Paperboards & Packaging, Agri Business & Information Technology.

• Established in 1910 as the Imperial Tobacco Company of India Limited, the company was renamed as the Indian Tobacco Company Limited in 1970 and further to I.T.C. Limited in 1974.

• The company completed 100 years in 2010, and as of 2012-13, had an annual turnover of US$8.31 billion and a market capitalization of US$45 billion. 

• It employs over 25,000 people at more than 60 locations across India and is part of Forbes 2000 list.

HISTORY OF THE COMPANY• ITC was incorporated on August 24, 1910 under the name Imperial Tobacco Company of India

Limited. As the Company's ownership progressively Indianised, the name of the Company was changed from Imperial Tobacco Company of India Limited to India Tobacco Company Limited in 1970 and then to I.T.C. Limited in 1974.

• In recognition of the Company's multi-business portfolio encompassing a wide range of businesses - Fast Moving Consumer Goods comprising Foods, Personal Care, Cigarettes and Cigars, Branded Apparel, Education and Stationery Products, Incense Sticks and Safety Matches, Hotels, Paperboards & Specialty Papers, Packaging, Agri-Business and Information Technology - the full stops in the Company's name were removed effective September 18, 2001.

• In 1975, the company acquired a hotel in Chennai, which was renamed the 'ITC-Welcomgroup Hotel Chola' now renamed to MyFortune, Chennai.

3. PAPERBOARDS& SPECIALITY PAPERS

• ITC's Paperboards and Specialty Papers Division is India's largest, technologically advanced and most eco-friendly, paper and paperboards business.

• The business caters to a wide spectrum of packaging, graphic, communication, writing, printing and specialty paper requirements through its four world-class manufacturing units, 8 sales offices and a network of more than 60 dealers in India, along with a robust international trade network of distributors / agents and 6 finishing operations close to the market for providing faster service to the customers.

4. PERSONAL CARE • ITC forayed into the Personal Care business in July 2005.

• In the short period since its entry, ITC has already launched an array of brands, each of which offers a unique and superior value proposition to discerning consumers. After an extensive consumer research and product development, ITC's personal care portfolio brings world-class products with clearly differentiated benefits to quality-seeking consumers.

5. AGRI BUSINESS• ITC's pre-eminent position as one of India's leading corporates in the agricultural sector is based

on strong and enduring farmer partnerships that has revolutionized and transformed the rural agricultural sector. One of the largest exporters of agri products from the country, ITC sources the finest of Indian Feed Ingredients, Food Grains, Marine Products, Processed Fruits & Coffee.

• ITC's Agri Business Division is the country's second largest exporter of agri-products. It currently focuses on exports and domestic trading of:

COMPETITORS OF ITC LTD • As we all know without competition we cannot calculate our growth as well as we

cannot make changes in the product. When any company establishes its business in any area it has to face many competitors in the same area. In case of ITC Ltd it has many competitors in FMCG sector some of them are:

CONCLSIONITC is a sound established company in the FMCG sector. ITC is having the consumers spread all over the country. If the company can enter into the chocolate industry where there are only two competitors i.e., Cadbury & nestle. ITC through its brand image can give great competition to the competitors. ITC must try to improve in scm and to have a strong distribution in rural markets.
