Online Sales Transforming The

Global CPG Market

Growth in online sales of Consumer Packaged Goods (or Fast Moving Consumer Goods – FMCG)

across international and emerging markets is set to mirror, if not surpass, the rapid growth the US and

the UK have experienced in recent years. We have put together some of the more interesting statistics

and trends we have come across that show just how important these markets will be for Consumer

Packaged Goods (CPG) companies interested in being competitive.

Right now, internet penetration in the so-called BRIC countries is low compared with the US and Europe.

Brazil, Russia and China’s penetration is 50%, while India’s is just 11%. But that is set to change as

these countries’ middle classes grow. Evidence shows that we are set to see an enormous increase in

online purchases, aptly titled a “Global eCommerce Gold Rush” by Cisco analysts.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. eCommerce is set to have a transformative impact on the CPG

sector right across Asia, Africa and South America in the coming years.
